Benn Maggs

Benn Maggs joined
the faculty of the "State Teachers' College" at Salisbury in 1933 when the
school was only eight years old. He had previously received his
Bachelor of Science degree from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in
Pennsylvania and his Masters degree from New Your University
Mr. Maggs was the
first male member of the Physical education Department when he began as a
Physical Educator and Athletics Coach. He started teaching the first
eight male students to be admitted to the college, and during the period
from 1930 until 1962 every male students was enrolled in Mr. Maggs'
physical education classes. His responsibilities included men's
athletics, intramurals and sports club activities.
A talented
musician as well as an athlete, Mr. Maggs was also the first instrumental
music instructor at the college and organized the first civic orchestra in
Salisbury.
His first
intercollegiate coaching sport was soccer, which he coached from 1934
until 1976 (except during World War II). And during his career he
also coached gymnastics, basketball and baseball. He was
instrumental in organizing track, intramural softball, tennis, volleyball,
boxing, fencing and weight lifting
As the college
developed and grew in size, Mr. Maggs became chairman of the men's
Physical Education Department, and he held this position until 1970 when
he elected to devote full time to teaching and coaching.
When Tawes
Gymnasium came into in 1962, Mr. Maggs helped with its layout and
development, just as he helped with plans for this new Physical Activity
Center which now carries his name.
