Benn Maggs

Benn Maggs joined the faculty of the "State Teachers' College" at Salisbury in 1933 when the school was only eight years old.  He had previously received his Bachelor of Science degree from East Stroudsburg State Teachers College in Pennsylvania and his Masters degree from New Your University

Mr. Maggs was the first male member of the Physical education Department when he began as a Physical Educator and Athletics Coach.  He started teaching the first eight male students to be admitted to the college, and during the period from 1930 until 1962 every male students was enrolled in Mr. Maggs' physical education classes.  His responsibilities included men's athletics, intramurals and sports club activities.

A talented musician as well as an athlete, Mr. Maggs was also the first instrumental music instructor at the college and organized the first civic orchestra in Salisbury.

His first intercollegiate coaching sport was soccer, which he coached from 1934 until 1976 (except during World War II).  And during his career he also coached gymnastics, basketball and baseball.  He was instrumental in organizing track, intramural softball, tennis, volleyball, boxing, fencing and weight lifting

As the college developed and grew in size, Mr. Maggs became chairman of the men's Physical Education Department, and he held this position until 1970 when he elected to devote full time to teaching and coaching.

When Tawes Gymnasium came into in 1962, Mr. Maggs helped with its layout and development, just as he helped with plans for this new Physical Activity Center which now carries his name.
