Fiscal Advisory Committee

Special Meeting with the President
and Executive Staff

January 9, 2003

The president asked the FAC to participate in a meeting to discuss the current budget situation.  She and the other presidents of the USM met with the chancellor this past Tuesday to discuss an impending  tuition increase for students.  She reported that there are no final budget numbers available at this time, and hoped that more information will be available in the next week or two.  SU needs to be ready to respond to how it will handle budget reductions.

The president shared some principles that she is suggesting guide SU in how it responds.  They are:

1.  Minimize impact on the instructional program

2.  Minimize impact on lower-salaried positions

3.  Minimize the impact to students.

She shared a preliminary list of "tools in the toolbox" that may have to be used as the budget reductions develop and we have a better idea of what SU's portion of the cuts will be.  The group responded to these tools and shared ideas regarding SU's resources and ability to respond to cuts, given its fiscal position.  Based on this intial discussion, she asked FAC and others in attendance to respond with further recommendations and ideas in preparation for final budget reductions figures .
