Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, Under-Secretary-General for the United Nations and Special Advisor on Africa will be speaking at Salisbury University on December 6, 2006, at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium of Holloway Hall. The title of his lecture is “Promoting Peace Amidst Demanding Conflicts.”

Professor Gambari served as the Ambassador/Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations from 1990-1999. During those years he served twice as the President of the Security Council, and chaired the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid, successfully assisting in the demise of Apartheid in South Africa. Prior to his appointment to the UN, Professor Gambari served as Nigeria’s Minister for External Affairs.

In 1999, Professor Gambari joined the Secretariat of the UN. In July 2005, the Secretary-General appointed Professor Gambari to be the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs.

The lecture is being hosted by the Center for Conflict Resolution’s “One Person Can Make a Difference” Lecture Series. The lecture is sponsored by SU Office of the President, the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution Program, Department of Political Science and the Interdisciplinary Major in International Studies, the Department of History, and the Center for Conflict Resolution.
