Sea Gulls Receive Second Straight NCAA Tournament Women's Tennis Bid
Face Methodist in Wednesday’s South Atlantic Regional First
Round
SALISBURY,
MD – One year after earning its first-ever berth in the NCAA Championship
Tournament, the Salisbury University women’s tennis team makes a return
appearance and begins play in the South Atlantic Regional in Lexington, VA on
Wednesday. Salisbury, the region’s #3 seed, faces number two-seed Methodist at
3:30 on Wednesday. With a victory, the Sea Gulls would advance to Thursday’s
second round against either #1 Washington & Lee or #4 Mary Washington.
“I
think this is a good first-round pairing for us,” said third-year Head Coach Randy
Halfpap. “This is one of the match-ups we were looking forward to because
we lost a close match at Methodist earlier this year. This gives us a chance to
avenge that loss.”
The
Sea Gulls tied a team record for victories this year with a 13-3 regular season
record. Salisbury also enters the NCAA Tournament as the champion of the Capital
Athletic Conference Tournament. SU secured its first-ever CAC title this season
while unseating 11-time champion Mary Washington. All three losses this year
came against teams also selected to the 26-team NCAA championship field.
“Our
team has been very consistent in its effort and performance this year,” said
Halfpap. “I’m not sure we have anybody who will earn all-America honors, but
everybody in the lineup is solid. Additionally, we have shown steady improvement
throughout the season. I think we enter the NCAA Tournament while playing our
best tennis of the season.”
Five
of the top six in Salisbury’s singles lineup were also on last year’s NCAA
squad. Senior Bridget Dellar (Huntingtown, MD) plays in the number one
singles flight. Dellar finished 7-7 in the regular season and was the 2002 CAC
runner-up in the #1 singles flight.
The rest of the singles lineup features junior Jody Cogar (Lake Placid, NY)
at the two position. She finished 8-8 during the regular season. Sophomore Samantha
Coldren (North East, MD), who finished 13-3, plays at number three.
Junior Heather Tyng (Columbia, MD) is at number four. She has the
team’s best individual record at 14-1. Junior Amy Campion (Bowie, MD)
plays at five. Campion has a 6-0 singles record. Sophomore Cassie Meyer (New
Market, MD) completes the lineup at number six. She was 11-2 during the
regular season.
Coldren
and Cogar form the number one doubles unit. Dellar and Campion combine on the
number two doubles team, with Tyng and senior Krissy Dryden (Moorestown, NJ)
on the number three doubles team.
Cogar,
Coldren, Tyng and Campion each won CAC singles titles in their flights this
season. All three doubles teams also captured CAC championships.
The
winner of the four-team regional in Lexington, VA advances to next week’s
eight-team national finals in Sweet Briar, Virginia.
