Salisbury
bests Muhlenberg on senior day
SALISBURY, Md. –
A day after falling to Mary Washington in the Capital Athletic
Conference championship, the Salisbury University women’s tennis team responded
with a big win over regionally ranked Muhlenberg College (5-8) on Senior Day.
The Sea Gulls, ranked No. 15 in the Atlantic South region, took four of six
singles matches and two doubles matches to beat the Mules, ranked No. 18 in the
region, 6-3.
Ironically, Salisbury relied on strong performances from its younger players to
send the seniors out with a victory on a sunny afternoon at the SU Tennis
Complex. Five of the six Sea Gull points came from their freshmen and sophomores
as Hannah Parsons led the way by winning her No. 4 singles match 6-1,
6-2. Parsons teamed with fellow sophomore Robyn Wendell to win No. 3
doubles 8-1.
Freshmen
Rachel Iosue and Kelly Fahrner each recorded singles victories,
and Jackie Burr teamed with Anne Marie Kable to record an 8-5 win
in No. 2 doubles.
Senior
leader Erika Mitry capped her outstanding career with a hard-fought 6-1,
7-5 win over Jenn Powell in No. 1 singles to ensure a team victory for the
Gulls.
Jenny
Rosler, one of two
seniors along with Mitry, fell in No. 2 singles, and the pair lost in No. 1
doubles. Despite mixed results today, Mitry and Rosler spearheaded Salisbury’s
13-8 season and helped the Gulls earn conference runner-up with a 6-1 regular
season mark.
