Jim Nestor,
the 2006 Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, was named head
coach of the women’s soccer program prior to the start of the 2001
season and has guided Salisbury to a 61-39-11 record in his six seasons
at the helm of the Sea Gulls. His resume at Salisbury includes four
trips to the CAC championship game, including most recently, the 2006
CAC title and a berth in the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer
Tournament.
Nestor got the Sea Gulls back on track in the 2006 season as they
claimed the CAC title a year after suffering the program’s first losing
season. Nestor led Salisbury to wins in four of the team’s final five
regular season games and three consecutive shutouts in the CAC
tournament. The Sea Gulls ranked among the conference’s best
statistically as they had the No. 1 ranked scoring offense and No. 2
ranked defense. The NCAA tournament berth was the program’s second
overall and first under the tutelage of Nestor.
Other highlights during Nestor’s tenure include a team record of nine
consecutive shutouts in both 2001 and again in 2004, unbeaten streaks of
both nine and 10-games, and 17 players named to the all-conference team.
Nestor inherited a Sea Gull soccer program that has known nothing but
success since moving to varsity status in 1994. The Sea gulls enjoyed
their most successful season ever in 2000, registering a record-setting
20-1-2 season that included their second conference championship and an
appearance in the NCAA Tournament’s final eight. Salisbury recorded an
NCAA-best 22-game unbeaten streak and was the last undefeated team in
the nation that season.
Salisbury has had 12 winning season in its 13 year history and recorded
double-digit win totals in 11 of those seasons. The Sea Gulls have had
59 players earn all-conference recognition since 1994 and has a stellar
163-67-16 all-time record in its 13 varsity campaigns.
In addition to his duties with the women’s soccer program, Nestor is
also the head coach of the women’s lacrosse team. He has led the
lacrosse team to four consecutive conference titles and NCAA appearances
and most notable a trip to the 2005 National Championship.
Nestor, a 1990 graduate of the University, returned to his alma mater
after serving as the head coach for women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer
at Division II Gannon University in Erie, Pa. from 1995 to 2001. Nestor
brought with him 10 years of coaching experience to Salisbury, including
stints at Frostburg State (1991-92), Colby-Sawyer (N.H.) (1992-94) and
Lafayette (Pa.) (1994).
Originally from Laurel, Md., Nestor received his bachelor’s degree in
physical education from Salisbury in 1990. He was a four-year letterman
on the Sea Gull lacrosse and wrestling teams during his collegiate
career. Nestor earned his master’s degree in health and physical
education at Frostburg State in 1992. His wife, Linda, is also a
Salisbury graduate.
