Coming off a 2-1 win over Mary Washington in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship Game, the Salisbury women’s soccer team begins play in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament this Saturday, November 4 in Rocky Mount, NC. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

The Sea Gulls (18-0-2 overall) are making their first tournament appearance and will face either Lynchburg (18-3-2) or Beaver (14-5-1) in Saturday’s game. Those teams play in one of the 13 first-round contests on Wednesday, November 1.

A victory in Saturday’s game would move Salisbury into Sunday’s Southeast Regional final. The Gulls would play either North Carolina Wesleyan (16-3-1), Christopher Newport (13-3-1) or Villa Julie (10-7).

The NCAA Tournament
The 45-team NCAA Championship Tournament is played as a single-elimination championship with all games played on campus sites. The 45 teams are divided into eight regional brackets, with no more than six teams in a bracket.  Salisbury is one of 32 teams that earned an automatic berth into the tournament as a conference champion. Thirteen teams received at-large invitations.  The Sea Gulls bring a nine-game winning streak into Saturday’s contest and are the only unbeaten team in the NCAA Tournament field. Salisbury’s 20-game unbeaten streak is the longest in the nation this season.

SU Enjoys Record-Setting Campaign
The Sea Gulls have established numerous team and individual records this season, including most wins, longest unbeaten streak, most goals scored in a season (93) and game (13), and most assists (63). Individually, junior Joy Mulholland has set a new record for season assists (11), while senior goalie Amy Forbes has increased her career shutout record to 41.

Bradford Leads Balanced Scoring Attack
Salisbury features four players with 10 or more goals this season and six players with at least 20 points. Junior Amber Bradford leads the team with 14 goals, including both markers in Saturday’s CAC Championship Game, and 34 total points. Junior Meredith Bigham has 13 goals and 32 points, with junior Cindy Maxfield also sporting 13 goals and 29 points.  Fourteen different players have scored at least one goal, and 18 players have at least one goal or one assist.  Salisbury’s 4.65 scoring average ranks fifth in the nation in the most recent national statistics. The Gulls also have the highest winning percentage (.950) in the country.

SU Against the NCAA Field
The Sea Gulls are 3-0 against the teams in the Southeast Regional this season. Salisbury downed North Carolina Wesleyan 3-1 at home on September 16; defeated Christopher Newport 3-1 on the road on October 3; and beat Villa Julie 4-1 at home on October 14.
