SU women's
soccer earns Pool C bid into NCAA tournament
INDIANAPOLIS – The
Salisbury University women's soccer team will make its second straight
appearance in the 2007 NCAA Division III tournament as the Sea Gulls received a
Pool C at-large bid. The 60-team field was announced by the NCAA Division III
Women's Soccer Committee on Sunday evening with the complete bracket revealed on
Monday.
Salisbury (14-3-1) had to wait for the official announcement of the championship
field after the maroon and gold lost its bid for a second consecutive Capital
Athletic Conference championship and an automatic berth into the tournament. SU
was one of 18 teams to secure a Pool C selection.
The Sea Gulls will face Eastern University (18-3), the Pennsylvania Athletic
Conference champion, in the first round of the tournament. Salisbury will travel
to Ewing, N.J., to The College of New Jersey, which was selected to host the
first and second round games. TCNJ (17-0-1), a national finalist the past two
seasons, and will face Farmingdale State (13-7-1) in the other first round game. The TCNJ-Farmingdale
winner will face the Salisbury-Eastern winner in the second round.
Salisbury will be making its third NCAA appearance (2000, '06, '07) where the
maroon and gold have posted a 2-2 record in four games. SU made it to the
quarterfinals in 2000 before the Sea Gulls lost 2-0 to Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Last season, the Sea Gulls bowed out in the first round to Johns Hopkins
University who won 2-1 in double overtime.
The first round games will be played on Saturday, November 10, with the second
round game on Sunday, November 11. The winner of the second round game will
advance to the NCAA sectionals the following weekend. The national semifinals
(November 23) and national championship (November 24) will be played in Orlando,
Fla., at the Walt Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
