Watkins
Does Her Part
Despite the
team’s 68-65 loss Wednesday night, sophomore forward Kiera Watkins
(Springfield, VA/Lake Braddock HS) of the women’s basketball team
certainly did all she could to rally the Gulls. Watkins finished with a
career-high 31 points, accounting for almost 50% of the team’s scoring output.
She also added a game-high 13 rebounds to register her fifth double-double of
the season. Watkins’ 31-point effort was the fourth best by a Capital Athletic
Conference player this season.
Barney
Among Best From Charity Stripe
Sophomore
guard Christen Barney (Runnemede, NJ/Overbrook HS) leads the Capital
Athletic Conference in free throw shooting, converting 38 of her 41 attempts
this season for a 92.7% success rate. Barney’s run includes 21 of 22 free
throws made over the last seven games. Her 92.7 percentage would rank her third
best in the nation this week, but she is one attempt short of the minimum needed
to qualify.
Narrow
Losses Prove Heartbreaking for Men’s Team
Sometimes,
young teams take their knocks in the close games. The men’s basketball team is
learning that lesson after suffering its fifth loss of four points or less in
Wednesday’s 71-68 setback to Goucher. Among those, three losses have been by
two points, with either the opponent’s winning basket or SU’s potential
game-winner coming at the buzzer.
Stewart
Earns Swimming Honor
Sophomore Gary
Stewart (Beltsville, MD/DeMatha HS) of the men’s swim team is this
week’s Capital Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week after registering three
individual wins for the Sea Gulls. Stewart
won the 100 breaststroke against both Catholic and Goucher, then added a second
victory in the 200 IM against Goucher. Stewart’s weekly CAC honor is the first
by a Sea Gull swimmer this season. The SU men and women conclude their home
schedules with a 5 pm meet against St. Mary’s on Friday.
Men’s Lacrosse Gets Underway
Preseason
practice begins on Sunday for the men’s lacrosse team as they begin defense of
their Division III national championship. Head Coach Jim Berkman will use
the three weeks of preseason to finalize his 45-player roster prior to SU’s
February 14 season opener. “We’re excited to get started and have the
potential for another great team,” said Berkman. The Sea Gulls begin the 2004
campaign ranked first in the preseason polls released by both Lacrosse Magazine
and Face-Off Yearbook.
