The Sea Gulls return 17 letterwinners
from last year's
record-setting 15-3 squad which captured its first Capital Athletic
Conference championship and advanced to the national semifinals of the
NCAA Championship Tournament. The Sea Gulls return key starters
throughout the midfield and defense, but must overcome the loss of five
of last year’s top six scorers on an offense that averaged 18.67 goals
per game, tops in the nation.
Last year's final four squad
established new team records for wins (15), goals scored (336) and
assists (184). Salisbury enjoyed three separate five-game winning streaks
during the season, and finished with a +10.3 scoring margin, third best
in the nation in the final NCAA statistics.
Senior Jen Mezzadra, a two-time
all-America (first team in 2000, third team in 1999), will pace the
attack unit once again. Mezzadra finished 11th in the nation
in goals per game last year (4.39) while registering SU season records
with 79 goals and 96 points. She begins the 2001 campaign as Salisbury’s
all-time leader in both goals
(164) and points (198).

Other returnees who should add scoring
punch on attack this season include junior Christine Sliger (25g-26a
in 2000), senior Stephanie Bozick (9g-3a) and junior Abby
Cooper (8g-3a). Junior
midfielders Amanda Almon (19g-7a) and Betsy McDuell
(11g-6a) are also capable scorers.
Returning senior starter Kelly Eberling (5g-3a) and junior
Shannon Danver (6a) add further strength to the midfield.
Sophomores Melissa Dugan (5g-2a)
and Kristen Maisel are expected to anchor the defense. Returning
juniors Julie Spittel and Dawn Joyce should play bigger
roles this season, while sophomore newcomer Katie Jesby may also
offer immediate help on defense. The Sea Gulls must replace last
year’s all-conference goalie, Lisa LeBeau.
Senior Leah Eppard, sophomore Dena Glisan and
freshman Karin Michalowicz are the preseason candidates.
SU has won 17 of 19 regular season
games in the Capital Athletic Conference since 1997, and 27 of 34 games
overall during the past two seasons. The Gulls hope to successfully
defend their CAC title in 2001 while also eyeing a third straight
appearance in the national postseason tournament.
