Season Outlook
The Salisbury
volleyball team returns nine letterwinners from last year's
18-18 squad which captured its second Capital Athletic Conference
championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in
three seasons. Despite the loss of two all-conference players, including
2000 CAC Player of the Year Katie Korreck, the Sea Gulls have enough
talent and experience to vie for the CAC crown again in 2001.
Senior outside hitter Kara Kowalksi,
a two-time All-CAC selectee, is the top returning player. Kowalski
earned first team all-conference honors last year as she finished third
in the league in digs (3.97/game), hitting percentage (.252) and service
aces (0.62/game). Kowalski begins her senior season already ranked as
Salisbury's all-time leader with 1,690 career digs.
Other returnees include
sophomore MH Kim Sheedy, who finished third on the team with 1.32
kills/game last year; junior MH Jessica
Freeman (1.28 kills/gm and 54 blocks); junior MH Samantha Crehan
(1.15 kills and 2.1 digs/game); and junior OH Courtney Dumrauf, who
finished with the second highest hitting percentage on the squad at
.250.
Sophomores Lauren Briggs (0.91 kills/game)
and Suzanne Powell will also have bigger roles this
season.
Senior Sara Teter and junior Monica
McLaughlin are the top two candidates to fill Korreck's spot at the
setter position.
Newcomers to the squad in 2001 are junior OH Rachel Bachtell;
sophomore MH Jenny Allen; freshman DS Kim Rementer; and
freshman OH Taren Gray.
