Sea Gulls make adjustments at new positions in season opener sweep
BALTIMORE –
It was a clean sweep for the Salisbury University volleyball team on Day One of the Asics/Johns Hopkins Invitational here Friday as the Sea Gulls won both of their matches. SU defeated former Capital Athletic Conference foe Goucher College, 3-0, (30-19, 30-24, 30-20) and swept Mt. Aloysius, 3-0, (30-14, 30-16, 30-22).

Junior Jaime Marzocchi recorded 31 assists in her debut at setter in the first match of the 2007 season against Goucher. Marzocchi, served as the Sea Gull libero last season, followed up the 31 assists with 25 out 75 attempts against Mt. Aloysius. Marzocchi's replacement at libero is sophomore Gabby Long, who also had a strong showing in her debut at a new position. Long had a team-high 22 digs against Goucher and then recorded 21 against Mt. Aloysius. In the latter match, Long added seven service aces.

Sophomore Rachel Downes led the maroon and gold in kills in both matches. Downes smashed 12 kills against the Gophers and added 11 digs. In the second match of the evening the outside hitter racked up 13 kills and eight digs. Fellow sophomore Nicole Massarelli added four service aces against Goucher and six kills.

SU returns to action tomorrow against UMass Boston at 10 a.m. and then a showdown against host Johns Hopkins University at 2 p.m.
