Sea Gulls earn split on Day One of Garnet Classic
SWARTHMORE, Pa.
The Salisbury University volleyball team faced No. 22 Stevens Institute of Technology and Cabrini College in Day One of the 2007 Garnet Classic at Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon. Salisbury (7-4) split its two matches with a win over Cabrini, 3-0, and a tough loss to Stevens Tech, 3-2.

SU led Stevens Tech 2-1 (30-27, 26-30, 30-25) but could not hold on as the maroon and gold lost the final two sets (15-30 and 7-15). Juniors Jaime Marzocchi and Stacey Krebs led the Gulls as the two posted some huge numbers in the five-set match. Marzocchi made 41 assists and 18 digs while Krebs nailed home 22 kills and matched Marzocchi's dig total. Fellow junior Stephanie Withers made five service aces for the Gulls. Sophomores Nicole Massarelli (eight kills, four blocks) and Gabby Long (19 digs) both pitched in a big way in the narrow loss.

Salisbury bounced back against Cabrini as the Gulls won in straight sets; 30-24, 30-25, 30-19. Junior Sabrina Larmer blocked six Cavalier shots and freshmen Melissa Stansbury added eight kills. Withers served up seven service aces, Marzocchi made 33 assists, Long came up with 31 digs and Krebs had 18 kills and five digs in the victory.

The Sea Gulls will compete in Day Two of the Garnet Classic tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. SU's opponent hasn't been determined.
