Jim Jones is serving in his seventh year as Salisbury's head coach for cross
country and track & field, having joined the staff in July, 1999. Jones
oversees the men's and women's teams in both sports.
Jones led the men's track team to a successful year in 2006, winning its 8th
overall Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) championship and third straight
title. Jones was recognized for the third consecutive season as the CAC
Track & Field Men's Coach of the Year. The women's team finished second
overall in the CAC for the second straight year.
In 2005, the Sea Gulls produced 26 all-CAC
performances including 17 individual conference champions. Junior Derrick
Washington was named the CAC Men's Athlete of the Year and freshman Casey
McInerney was named the CAC Women's Rookie of the Year. Additionally,
Senior Tim Robinson earned All-American honors
in the javelin by finishing in eighth place with the throw of 192’ 4”at the 2005
NCAA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Iowa.
Awards are nothing new for Jones, who has been
named as the CAC Men’s Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005. Under
his guidance, the Gulls have produced the CAC Runner of the Year in 2005
(Derrick Washington) and the CAC Rookie of the Year in 2004 (Ruth Hedrick and
Marcus Tines) and 2005 (Casey McInerny). Jones has also piloted the men to the
CAC title two times in 2004 and 2005.
Over the past six seasons 2000-2005 under
Jones’s tenure, Salisbury has had 73 men and 44 women recognized as all-Capital
Athletic Conference performers, this includes 55 CAC individual champions.
Salisbury has broken 17outdoor school records, 7 athletes meet provisional
qualifying standards for the NCAA National Championships, and one All-American
under Jones.
Continuing a history of academic success as
well, the SU women's squad earned all-academic honors from the United States
Track Coaches Association (USTCA) with a cumulative GPA of 3.340 in 2005.
"Salisbury has an outstanding academic
reputation and has a lot to offer students, both academically and athletically,"
says Jones. "Our goal will be to continue to do well on the conference level
while also moving to the next level nationally."
Jones came to Salisbury after serving for five
years as the head coach for both cross country and track & field at NCAA
Division III Muskingum College in New Concord, OH. Prior to that, Jones spent
four years as an assistant cross country and track coach, with two year stints
at Otterbein (OH) College as well as his alma mater, Mount Union (OH) College.
"We're fortunate to have a person of Jim's
abilities at Salisbury University," says Dr. Michael Vienna, SU's director of
athletics. "He certainly understands the Division III philosophy as both a
student-athlete and a coach. We feel that he will be able to help us compete at
the national level."
Jones served on the NCAA National Track & Field
Committee from 2001-2005 and served as the committees chair from 2004-2005.
A native of Coshocton, Ohio, Jones is a 1991
graduate of Mount Union, where he was a four-year member of both the cross
country and track & field teams. Jones served as team captain of the cross
country squad for three seasons and was an NCAA national qualifier in cross
country. He and his wife Amy have a daughter, Hope, and a son, Ethan, and reside
in Salisbury.
