SU’S ESPOSITO PLACES 9TH AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP MEET

Sets New School Record in 800-Meters

NAPERVILLE, IL - Salisbury’s Sherry Esposito (Westminster, MD/Westminster HS) concluded her career with a ninth place finish in the 800-meters at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championship Meet on May 26.

Esposito broke her own school-record in the event while finishing fourth in her qualifying heat with a time of 2:13.76. The top eight combined finishers in each of two qualifying heats advanced to the finals in the event. Esposito missed qualifying for the finals by 7/1000th of a second.

"Sherry was a little disappointed with not making the finals in her event," said SU Head Coach Jim Jones, who accompanied the Salisbury senior to the championship meet on the campus of North Central College. "But she ran a great race, competed very hard and had a personal-best time to finish out her career. I’m certainly very proud of her and thankful for her contributions to our program at Salisbury University. In time, we’ll all feel very good about how she finished up her career."

Esposito had qualified for the NCAA Championship with a new school record of 2:13.87 at SU's Last Chance Meet last week.

Sophomore pole vaulter Amy Jacobs (Linthicum, MD) also met the NCAA's provisional qualifier and broke her own school-record with a jump of 9'6" at the Last Chance Meet, but her height, 60th best in the nation, did not rank high enough to earn her an invitation to the national championship.

Esposito, SU Women's Team Earn Academic Honors

In addition to her 9th place finish at the national championship, Sherry Esposito also earned All-Academic Team honors from the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA). Esposito has a 3.65 cumulative grade point average, easily surpassing the 3.25 minimum.  In addition to Esposito's individual honor, the entire Salisbury women's track team was also recognized by the USTCA for posting a team gpa of 3.33.
