SU
Swimming Program Receives Academic All-American Honors
July 21, 2006
SALISBURY, Md. – The
Salisbury University swimming program received Academic All-American status for
its performance in the classroom for the 2006 spring semester. The College
Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) recently released its Academic
All-American Swimming Teams for all NCAA divisions.
The Salisbury women's swim
team ranked third overall out of 95 NCAA Division III teams reporting with a
team grade point average of 3.58. The Sea Gulls' superior rating was right
behind Sweet Briar College (3.76) and Hollins University (3.71). Salisbury was
tied for 8th overall, with Iona College, out of 235 women’s teams from all three
divisions (I, II and III).
The Salisbury men's swim team
received an excellent rating with a team GPA of 3.05 which ranked 47th out of 74
Division III teams reporting.
"This is a great
accomplishment for our team. The fact that our athletes can perform well in
academics as well as athletics is a tribute to their work ethic, character and
dedication," said Salisbury coach Jill Stephenson. "I am very proud of their
accomplishments in and out of the water and of the positive reflection they
bring to Salisbury University."
To qualify for the CSCAA
honors the GPA of the entire squad, including all athletes on the eligibility
list must average at least a 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. The Sea Gulls had five
student-athletes (four women, one man) receive a 4.0 this past spring semester.
The awards are announced each semester.
Salisbury's swimming program
has qualified for this award consistently since 1996.

Salisbury Swim Teams Ready to Open Season
November 1, 2005
SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury head swimming coach Jill Stephenson, beginning her 11th
year as mentor of the squad, has her squads focused on team goals in the
upcoming season. In fact, the motto for this year is ‘Out of yourself and into
the team’. With this team mentality, Stephenson is extremely excited about the
prospects of a successful season.
"So much of swimming is mental," Stephenson
said. "We have to be prepared and the swimmers know they must push themselves."
She gives an example of looking across the lane on the last lap of a race to see
an opponent has pulled even. In this crucial situation, will the Salisbury
swimmer give in or push harder? Stephenson is anxious to find the answer as the
season begins on Tuesday at Rowan University, but she has a pretty good idea
about the character of her teams.
The men’s team will
look for contributions from steady seniors Gary Stewart (Beltsville, Md./DeMatha)
and Kevin Bauer (Baltimore, Md./Overlea) as they enter their final
season at Salisbury University, but a couple underclassmen may be the key for
Sea Gull success. Sophomore Ross Spangler (Dover, Pa./Dover Area) and
freshman Jamie Overholt (Pitman, N.J./Pitman) could rack up points for
Salisbury in freestyle sprints. Along with freshman Brad Buckley (Rockville,
Md./Magruder), these young swimmers could make quite an impact in
team competition.
On the women’s side,
Salisbury University has good depth in quite a few events. Junior Laura
Allen (Laurel, Md./Atholton) will pace the Sea Gulls in the breaststroke
and intermediates, and fellow junior Hilary Yates (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury)
will cover the butterfly and backstroke. Senior Aly Hammond (York, Pa./York
Suburban) is a middle distance freestyle specialist hoping to score for the
Gulls in those events.
Salisbury also has a
talented freshmen tandem of freshmen Raienne South (Rockville, Md./Magruder)
and Kerry Anne Farrell (Tumersville, N.J./Washington Township). Ferrell
gives Salisbury a solid scoring threat in the backstroke. South swims distance
IM events and has high hopes to make nationals. Stephenson enjoys watching South
and Allen push each other to get stronger, stating, "It’s a friendly individual
competition to make nationals."
In terms of team
competition, Salisbury University is ready to challenge for a top spot in the
Capital Athletic Conference. "Mary Washington is the team to beat," says
Stephenson, "After that, it’s anybody’s game." That "anybody" could very well be
Salisbury. A rule change has increased the number of swimmers allowed to score
from 12 to 16. A deep and balanced team like the one Salisbury has will benefit
from the expansion. With more team members able to score, it should not be
difficult for the skilled, driven Sea Gulls to go 'Out of yourself and into the
team.'
