Sea Gulls earn split in season opener against CAC foes
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Salisbury University swimming teams opened up their 2007-08 season Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C., against two Capital Athletic Conference opponents in host Gallaudet University and University of Mary Washington.

The SU men's and women's teams came away with victories against the Bison but both squads fell to defending Capital Athletic Conference champions and perennial swimming powerhouse Mary Washington.

On the women's side freshman Becky Akers set a school record, in her collegiate debut, in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:19.7 against Mary Washington. The SU women's team (1-1, 1-1 CAC) lost 73-22 to the Eagles. Salisbury won big against Gallaudet with a 76-19 victory.

The SU men's team
(1-1, 1-1 CAC) had a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.25 in the 64-31 loss to the Eagles. Sea Gull fifth-year senior Cole Magnum (50 freestyle, 22.23 sec) and senior Christopher McGaunn (500 freestyle, 5:34.9) had great individual performances on the day for the Gulls. The maroon and gold defeated Gallaudet 75-19 in the other CAC matchup.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Tuesday, October 30, when they travel to Glassboro, N.J., to take on Rowan College at 6 p.m.
