Margie Knight
has established herself as one of Salisbury
University's most successful coaches since joining the Sea Gull staff in
1997. Knight, who serves as
the head coach of both the women's softball and volleyball programs, has brought
unprecedented success to both teams after a distinguished coaching and teaching tenure at
North Caroline (Md) High School.
Under her leadership, the Sea Gull softball team has enjoyed its three most
successful seasons ever in 2003, 2004 and 2005. The Sea Gulls finished as the national championship
runner-up at the 2003 NCAA Division III World Series. For the fourth time
in six years, Salisbury set a new school-record for victories, finishing with a final 45-6-1 record in 2003. Salisbury also finished 2nd in the
nation in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll.
As follow-up in 2004, the Sea Gulls captured their eighth straight Capital
Athletic Conference championship and earned their eighth straight NCAA
Tournament berth. The Gulls, ranked #1 in the national preseason poll,
advanced to the World Series for the third straight year and finished
third place in the nation. SU was also third in the final NFCA poll of the
year.
In 2005, the Sea Gulls continued their winning ways, winning the CAC
championship for the ninth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA
Tournament for the ninth consecutive season. The Gulls, ranked #2 in
the national preseason poll, advance to the World Series for the fourth
straight year and finished second in the nation. SU finished the
season ranked #2 in the final NFCA poll of the year.
Knight, who was named the Capital Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year
for the fifth time in 2004, has piloted the Sea Gulls to 30 wins or more in each of
her ninth seasons. She is the winningest coach in team history and concluded
the 2004 season with a 341-88-2 career record. On March 2, 2005,
Coach Knight recorded her
300th career victory in the first game of a doubleheader against
McDaniel. In the last eight years, the Sea Gulls have won five NCAA regional
championships and finished as a regional runner-up three times, while
making five appearances in the World Series.
A 1979 graduate of the University, Knight returned to her alma mater after building an
impressive resume at the prep level. She won state high school championships in
both softball and volleyball during her 13-year head coaching career at North Caroline.
The Bulldogs captured the state softball title in 1988 and 1991, and won the state
volleyball championship in 1990. Knight compiled a 392-77 combined record in the two sports during her tenure, a winning
percentage of over 83%.
A native of Catonsville, MD, Knight was no stranger to athletic success as a collegiate
athlete at Salisbury University. She was a four-year letterwinner in women's basketball and a
three-year letterwinner in both softball and volleyball. Additionally, Knight served as a
team captain for two years in each of those sports. She was also named MVP of the
basketball squad twice and MVP of the softball team as a senior. In recognition of her
outstanding collegiate career, she was inducted into the Salisbury Athletics Hall of Fame in
1995.
