Junior
softball outfielder Kareem Falcon (Severn, MD/Chesapeake HS) is the
winner of the CAC’s 2004 Unsung Hero Award.
Meehan
was named the Capital Athletic Conference’s 2003 Player of the Year and also
selected as SU’s team MVP. He helped guide the Sea Gulls to their fourth
conference championship in 2003 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament’s national
quarterfinals. Meehan also received one of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarships in order to continue his postgraduate study. Despite
the hardship of missing one playing season and two semesters of school (Spring
2003, Fall 2003), her spirit remained strong. She continued to correspond with
teammates and coaches by email throughout her time overseas, including daily
messages of encouragement as SU advanced to the 2003 Division III World Series. Her
unit returned from Iraq on December 6 and she returned to school this past
January. Her contributions to the team (.339 BA, 22 RBI) have helped guide the
Sea Gulls (38-6) back to the Division III World Series. SU opens against Alma
(MI) College in Friday’s first round at 1:30 pm. The
male and female scholar-athlete awards and the unsung hero award are determined
based on voting by the conference’s athletic directors and sports information
directors.
