of Wins on Opening Day Salisbury, Md. - Eight of the 12 games played during the first day of the Ninth Annual Sea Gull Invitational Softball Tournament were decided by three runs or less. Salisbury and Moravian, who are tied for the #2-ranking in Division III by the NFCA, each posted 2-0 records during the opening day, while Wilkes also went 2-0. Six teams posted 1-1 records after two games, while three teams were winless at 0-2. Salisbury and Moravian will highlight the final day on Saturday when they square off at 12-noon. Cabrini 0 - Salisbury sophomore Erin Ruest led the Sea Gulls’
offensive attack, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, HR and three
RBI. Seniors Kareem Falcon (1-for-2) and Leslie White (2-for-3)
each blasted a two-run homerun to add to SU’s seven total hits. Junior Lacey Lister and freshman Kirsten Wells combined for the shutout, working three and two innings, respectively. Lister picked up her fifth win of the season, allowing just three hits while striking out nine. Salisbury 5, King’s 3 - Lister recorded her sixth win of the year, giving up just two hits while fanning five and Wells notched her first save of the year, throwing two-thirds of an inning, striking out two. Falcon (1-for-3) hit her second two-run homer of the day to put the Sea Gulls up 2-0 after five. After Monarchs’ third baseman Kate Shiffer tied the game on a two-run home run of her own a half-inning later, SU answered with three runs on five hits in the sixth frame. Ruest went 2-for-3 in the game and freshman Whitney Schrader added a two RBI. Moravian 2, Christopher Newport 1 - Meagan Hennessy recorded the win on the mound for Moravian, allowing just one run on three hits while walking three and fanning 11. Michelle Prewitt received the loss for Christopher Newport, giving up two runs on nine hits while walking none and striking out seven. The Greyhounds were led offensively by Heather Bortz. The senior shortstop went 3-for-4. LeeAnna Roberts had a 2-for-4 outing, Lauren Homa went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Justina Black went 1-for-3 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored. Melanie Hose paced CNU with a 1-for-2 outing, recording a double and driving in a run. Moravian 1, Oneonta 0 - Hennessy recorded two wins on the mound for Moravian for the day. The junior hurler threw a one-hit shutout, striking out 12 and not walking a batter. Amy Herba took the loss for Oneonta, surrendering one run on six hits while striking out three and walking one. Offensively, Danielle Carrione went 3-for-4 to pace the Greyhounds. She also had the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning, driving in Bortz. Roberts went 1-for-3, with a sacrifice, and Black and Beth Paly each finished 1-for-3. Sarah Place paced the Red Dragons with a 1-for-3 effort, tagging a double. Wilkes 1, Va. Wesleyan 0 - Sophomore Laura Agresti stole the show in this one, hurling a two-hit shutout while fanning 17 batters for Wilkes. She only allowed one walk. Tanya Garbati took the loss for the Marlins, giving up one run on only two hits while striking out five and walking none. Garbati also led Va. Wesleyan at the plate, finishing 1-for-2. Wilkes 8, Manhattanville 2 - Nadine Taylor went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run to pace Wilkes past Manhattanville. Alexis Petite went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double, and Becky Plebani went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Michele Ribeiro paced Manhattanville, going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sarah Playchak picked up the win on the mound for Wilkes, allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out three. Trina Ramsdel was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits while walking five. Va. Wesleyan 11, Manhattanville 2 - Becky Sowell threw a two-hitter to lead Virginia Wesleyan past Manhattanville. She struck out five while not allowing a walk. Ramsdell was the losing pitcher for the Valiants, giving up 11 runs (10 earned) on 13 hits with three walks. Jessica Shepherd was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Marlins. She also drove in a pair of runs. Sterling Valentine went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI, Barbara Mullins finished 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI and Brianna Strain went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Lynchburg 2, York 1 - Jennifer Overstreet pitched a five-hitter to lead Lynchburg past York. She allowed one run on five hits while fanning six and walking one. Danielle Ditzel took the loss for York, giving up one run on three hits. She also struck out three and walked none. Brittany Edelen led the Hornets offensively, finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI. Christy Mays went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Kari Meacham paced the Spartans with a 1-for-3 outing, with a double and a run batted in. York 4, Rutgers-Camden 2 - Megan Mickles recorded the win on the mound, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking four in a victory for York. Becky Johnson was the losing pitcher for Rutgers-Camden. She gave up four runs on four hits while striking out eight. Krista Williams had a 2-for-3 outing to pace the Spartans offensively. Harper Cornell drove in a pair of runs. Michele Schlichtig went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run for the Scarlet Raptors. Christopher Newport 3, Oneonta 0 - Michelle Prewitt dominated Oneonta with a no-hitter to pace CNU. She struck out 16 batters and did not allow a walk. Kacie Cunningham was the losing pitcher, giving up three runs on six hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Rutgers-Camden 9, Lynchburg 0 - Autumn Millett had a perfect 2-for-2 game at the plate with a triple and four RBI to lead Rutgers-Camden to the win. Tara Fisher went 1-for-2 with three RBI. Christy Mays and Caroline Cubbage both finished 1-for-2. Schlichtig was the winning pitcher for the Scarlet Raptors, throwing a three-hit shutout while fanning seven and walking just one. Overstreet took the loss for the Hornets, giving up seven runs on six hits while three strikeouts. King’s 7, Cabrini 6 - Cassy Shiffer had a 2-for-4 outing at the plate, with three RBI and a game-winning double to pace King’s past Cabrini. King’s trailed 6-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but retaliated for the win. Kristin Brady tagged a double for the Monarchs, Nikki Kotula finished 1-for-3 and two RBI. Stacey Preambo went 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Taggart went 3-for-4 to lead the Cavaliers. Diana Frosch had a 2-for-3 outing and Megan O’Brien went 2-for-4.
