Salisbury Downs Moravian;
Headed Back to World Series

Salisbury, MD - Salisbury University is
heading to its fourth straight World Series appearance. The No.2-ranked Sea Gull
softball team rode the bat of senior third baseman Leslie White (Pittsville,
MD/Parkside) and rolled through the NCAA Division III Softball Salisbury
Regional unbeaten and completed its three-game sweep of the tournament with a
6-2 victory over No.19-ranked Moravian College Sunday at Sea Gull Field.
Salisbury (40-4), which
has five appearances at the World Series in the history of the school, will set
its sights on Alma College (Mich.) Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Peace College in
Raleigh, NC. Alma knocked off Aurora University, 4-1, in the Alma Regional Final
on Sunday. Alma (32-8) will be making its second straight World Series
appearance and fifth overall. Moravian ended the season with a 37-8 mark.
White had the hot bat
for Salisbury, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles,
a home run, two runs scored and drove in five of the six Sea Gull runs. Junior
first baseman Erin Ruest (Waldorf, MD/McDonough) also added two doubles
as she finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Sophomore Tee Dronenburg
(Columbia, MD/Howard) went 1-for-2, senior left fielder Kareem Falcon
(Severn, MD/Chesapeake) finished 1-for-3 and junior shortstop Kristy
Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carroll) also picked up a hit.
Moravian third baseman Kelly
Santry went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored, second baseman Beth Paly
hit her 11th double of the season and scored a run.Catcher Danielle Carrione
and shortstop Heather Bortz each added hits.
This game looked to be
a battle of two of the top pitchers in the country when the contest started.
Salisbury junior Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) entered the
tournament ranked 15th in the nation in ERA, fourth in victories and 10th in
strikeouts per outing, while the Greyhounds’ Meagan Hennessey was
ranked seventh in ERA and second in victories. Lister (29-2) picked up the win,
her third of the Regional tourney. She pitched 3 2/3-innings, giving up two runs
on four hits while striking out three and walking two. Freshman Kirsten Wells
(Fallston, MD/Fallston) came out of the bullpen in relief, allowing just one
hit in 3 1/3-innings.
Hennessey (29-6) took
the loss in the circle. She allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits while
walking two and fanning two.
Back-to-back doubles by
Ruest and White resulted in Salisbury taking a 1-0 lead after the first frame.
After Moravian tied the score in the top of the third, the Sea Gulls scored
three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good, 4-1. Serena
Fleming (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) reached base on an error and Ruest walked.
White then came on and slammed a three-run homer just inside the left-field
pole.
The Greyhounds cut the
lead to 4-2 in the top of the fourth when Paly crossed the plate on a single by
Santry. But two runs by the Sea Gulls in the bottom of the frame put the game on
ice and Wells did the rest in the circle.
Five Salisbury players
were named to the Salisbury Regional All-Tournament team. They included first
baseman Erin Ruest, third baseman Leslie White, outfielder Kareem Falcon and
pitcher Lacey Lister. Outfielder Serena Fleming was chosen as an at-large
player.

Moravian Shuts Down Roanoke,
5-0
May 14, 2005
Salisbury, MD - Junior, designated hitter, Richelle
McWilliams crushed a double and a two-run home run to lead Moravian in its
5-0 victory over Roanoke. The Greyhounds are now set to play Salisbury in the
NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Softball Championship final Sunday at
12-noon. Now the Greyhounds, who dropped a first-round game to Roanoke, must
defeat host-team Salisbury twice to advance to the World Series in Raleigh, NC
next weekend.
The Greyhounds wasted
no time getting on the board, as seniors Heather Bortz and Leah Holmes,
who both finished with a hit and a run scored, had back-to-back singles to lead
off the first. The two would later score on a RBI-fielder’s choice by
McWilliams and a throwing error by Roanoke’s third-baseman, to take a 2-0
lead.
That is all
starting pitcher, junior Megan Hennessy (29-5), would need. The
right-hander allowed just five hits in seven innings of work, striking out three
and walking no one.
Moravian picked up one
more run in the third and two in the fifth, as McWilliams (2-for-3, 4 RBI) hit
her tenth homerun of the year, tying the school record held by Janelle Brey,
which was set in 2002.
Freshman Amy Gillis
(9-5) recorded the loss for the Maroons, who were eliminated from the
tournament.

Moravian Advances Past
Ferrum, 6-3
May 14, 2005
Salisbury, MD - After trailing by one run, Moravian exploded for five runs in
the sixth inning to defeat Ferrum, 6-3, in the second day of the NCAA Division
III Atlantic Region Softball Championship Tournament at Salisbury’s Sea Gull
Field Saturday.
Junior All-American Megan Hennessy (28-5) went the
distance, to earn her first win of the tournament. They Greyhound ace struck out
seven batters and allowed eight hits in the contest.
Moravian knotted the score at two, with Hennessy’s
(2-for-3, RBI) two-out single down the left field line. After scoring on a
Ferrum infield error, freshman Beth Paly (2-for-4) ripped a single to
left to plate Hennessy and seniors Heather Bortz (1-for-2) and Leah
Holmes.
Ferrum senior Wendy Hunt, junior Jenny Perdue,
and freshman Mary Greenway had two hits a piece with Perdue blasting her
first HR of the year and Greenway picking up an RBI. Sophomore hurler Kim Cox
received the loss for the Panthers despite allowing just two earned runs.

Salisbury Knocks off
Roanoke, 6-1

Salisbury,
MD - No.2-ranked Salisbury University picked up two runs in the second,
fourth, and fifth innings Saturday to defeat Roanoke College, 6-1, in the NCAA
Division III Atlantic Region Softball Championship Tournament. Senior Kareem
Falcon (Severn/MD/Chesapeake) and junior Erin Ruest (Waldorf,
MD/McDonough) led SU’s offensive attack, combing for four hits and five
RBI.
The Sea Gulls (39-4)
will advance to the Regional Final on Sunday to face No.19-ranked Moravian
College (37-7), which won twice on Saturday. The Greyhounds defeated Ferrum
College, 6-3, and Roanoke College, 5-0, to work their way back through the
losers’ bracket. Moravian fell to Roanoke, 2-1, in the opening round. The
Greyhounds must defeat Salisbury twice to prevent the Sea Gulls from reaching
their fourth straight World Series. The finals begin at 12-noon.
After
a one-out hit by sophomore Nichole Fuqua (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery),
Falcon (2-for-3, 3 RBI) blasted Roanoke’s Lyndsi Craig’s (14-3) 1-0
pitch over the left-center field fence for her seventh HR of the year. The Gulls
added two more in the fourth on a single by Falcon, which plated pinch runners
junior Megan Ellzy (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and senior Eryn
Mathews (Baltimore, MD/Eastern Tech).
Roanoke
scored its only run in fourth on a home run by senior Kim Rowe (1-for-3),
but the Gulls answered right back in the top of the fifth, as Ruest (2-for-4)
singled up the middle to score senior Kim Rementer (Denton, MD/North Caroline)
and junior Kristy Shaffer (Manchester, MD/North Carrol).
Junior
Lacey Lister (Denton, MD/North Caroline) recorded her 28th win
of the year, pitching five and one-third, while allowing just two hits and
striking out four. Freshman Kirsten Wells (11-2) threw the final inning
and two-thirds, retiring five of the six batters she faced.

Moravian Eliminates Mary
Baldwin, 7-0
May 13, 2005
Salisbury, MD - Moravian College scored five
runs in the top of the first inning and then coasted from there as the
Greyhounds remained alive in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Softball
Tournament Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 blanking of Mary Baldwin College
(15-24) in an elimination game.
Megan Ritchey improved
to 7-1 on the year in the circle as she picked up the win for Moravian (35-7).
She went the distance, tossing a two-hit shutout. She fanned five while walking
three. Denise Michael (12-13) was the losing hurler for the Fighting
Squirrels. She gave up seven runs (two earned) on 13 hits while striking out
five and walking three.
Moravian’s Beth
Paly went 1-for-4, but connected for her 10th double of the season. Other
Greyhounds hitting doubles included Lauren Homa (3-for-3, run, RBI) and
shortstop Heather Bortz (2-for-4, 2 runs). Justina Black also had
a hot bat, finishing 3-for-3 with a run and a RBI.

Salisbury Scores Early,
Blanks Ferrum, 1-0

Salisbury,
MD - Salisbury University pitcher Lacey Lister showed why she’s an
all-American as the junior pitched a two-hitter Friday afternoon to help the
Sea Gulls to a 1-0 victory over Ferrum College in the first day of the NCAA
Division III Atlantic Regional Softball Tournament at Sea Gull Field.
Lister struck out 12
batters and walked just four as she improved her record to 27-2 on the year. Kim
Cox took the setback for Ferrum (26-14), giving up one run on five hits
while walking two and fanning two.
Salisbury (38-4) first
baseman Erin Ruest (1-for-2) connected for her 11th double of the season
and center fielder Serena Fleming went 2-for-3 with a run scored and hit
her fourth two-bagger of the year. Shortstop Kristy Shaffer and Nichole
Fuqua also had hits in the game for the Sea Gulls.
The Sea Gulls scored
the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first on back-to-back doubles.
Fleming hit her double with one out and Ruest followed it with one of her own to
right center.

Roanoke Takes Down
Moravian, 2-1, in Nine Innings

Salisbury, MD - Several Moravian players were taken ill
this week and No.3-seed Roanoke had what it took to knock the No.2-seed
Greyhounds off in nine innings, 2-1, in opening-day action at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Region Softball Tournament at
Sea Gull Field.
Roanoke (33-10) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second
when catcher Erin Ruitenberg (2-for-4, RBI) singled up the middle and
eventually scored on a Lyndsi Craig (1-for-3, RBI) sacrifice fly. But
Moravian (35-7) tied the score in the bottom of the sixth when shortstop Heather
Bortz (3-for-3, run) walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by when Beth
Paly hit into a sacrifice bunt. She scored on a single by Justina Black
(1-for-4, RBI).
Roanoke scored the wining run in the top of the second
extra frame on back-to-back hits. Left fielder Hillary Hudgins doubled to
right center and Kim Rowe was intentionally walked. Ruitenberg then
followed that with a single down the leftfield line, driving in Hudgins.
Craig (14-2) picked up the win in the circle for Roanoke.
She pitched eight innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits while walking
three and striking out six. Emily Rackely recorded her fourth save of the
season. Meagen Hennessy (27-5) dropped only her fifth contest in 32
decisions. She worked all nine frames, giving up two runs on five hits while
walking one and fanning nine.

Ferrum Takes Down Mary
Baldwin, 6-1

Salisbury,
MD - No.4-seed Ferrum College capitalized on six Mary Baldwin College errors
Friday morning as the Panthers (26-14) moved into the winners’ bracket with a
6-1 victory over the No.5-seed Fighting Squirrels on the opening day of the NCAA
Division III Atlantic Region Softball Tournament at Sea Gull Field.
Ferrum pitcher Stacey
Porter (3-1) picked up the victory in the circle, throwing a four-hitter
while walking three and fanning three batters. Denise Michael (12-12)
took the setback for Mary Baldwin (15-24).
Panther designated
hitter Stacey Porter connected with her sixth double of the season and
finished the game 2-for-4. First baseman Krystal Ellis (1-for-3) hit her
10th two-bagger of the season. Mary Greenway also had a multiple-hit day,
finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Janice Udy
paced the Fighting Squirrels with a 2-for-3 outing. Center fielder Lacey
Ogburn was 1-for-1 with a run scored and Mina Uejima added a single
and a RBI.
Ferrum entered the
tournament ranked No.26 in the nation.
