Waskewicz
belts a pair as the Sea Gulls take two
SALISBURY, Md. –
Freshman shortstop Kelly Waskewicz had a grand afternoon as Salisbury
University swept the University of Mary Washington in softball to remain unbeaten in the
Capital Athletic Conference.
SU (20-6, 4-0 CAC)
bested UMW (20-16, 4-4 CAC) in both games of a doubleheader at Sea Gull
Field. Waskewicz blasted a home run in each game as the Sea Gulls won game
one, 2-1, and game two, 9-1.
Sophomore Stacy Davis started and notched the win in the first game to
improve her record to 7-2. Davis struck out six, gave up only five hits through
seven innings, and allowed one unearned run. The only earned run of the game for
either team came off the bat of Waskewicz on a towering shot to deep centerfield
in the third inning.
Mary Washington starter Kirsten Rowell took the loss and fell to 12-7 despite
surrendering only four hits. Pinch runner Lauren Witzke crossed the plate
with the eventual game-winning run when the Eagles were unable to cleanly field
a sacrifice bunt in the fourth inning.
In game two, Waskewicz plagued the Eagles once again. Salisbury loaded the bases
in the bottom of the second against UMW pitcher Katherine Matusik. With two outs
and two strikes, the freshman slugger launched a grand slam over the left field
fence to clear the bases and put the Gulls atop 4-1. In her next plate
appearance, Waskewicz doubled in two more runs with a laser down the left field
line. For the day, the shortstop hit home runs eight and nine for the season and
plated seven Sea Gulls.
The Gulls would add three more runs in the fifth inning on sharp hits from
Stacey Malarkey, Ali Ritter, and Jen Cahall to invoke the
eight-run mercy rule.
Kirsten Wells
earned the victory in the circle as she worked five innings and allowed only one
run on two hits.
Salisbury returns to action at home on Tuesday, April 10, at 3 pm when
they face another CAC opponent in Gallaudet.
