Salisbury set to make 11th
straight NCAA tournament appearance
INDIANAPOLIS - The
Salisbury University softball team will make its 11th straight trip to the NCAA
tournament as the Sea Gulls were one of the 64 Division III teams assigned to
one of the eight regions of the 2007 NCAA softball tournament on Sunday.
Salisbury, one of the 17 at-large selections, was assigned to the Fayetteville,
N.C. region where the maroon and gold will open up against Emory University.
The Sea Gulls (36-7) ranked
No. 21 in the country and a fourth-seed in the upcoming region has a tough draw.
SU will face No. 12 Emory, who is a fifth-seed in the region, on Thursday, May
10 at Noon. The winner will advance to face either top-seed and No. 23 Methodist
or eighth-seeded LaGrange. This is a double elimination tournament so the Sea
Gulls are guaranteed a game on Friday, May 11. SU will play at either 10 a.m. or
2 p.m. on Friday.
The defending national
champion Rutgers-Camden is also in the Fayetteville region. Marietta, Lynchburg
and Christopher Newport are the other teams in the region. SU has faced
Lynchburg and Christopher Newport this season and sports a combined 3-2 record
against the two teams.
Salisbury has made 13 NCAA
tournament appearances and has been national runner-up twice (2003 and 2005).
The Sea Gulls have made five trips to the College World Series, most recently in
2005.
