Sea Gulls take two from Captains
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.
– Three days after it dropped a 6-3 decision to Christopher Newport University at the Sea Gull Invitational, the Salisbury University softball team swept the Captains on Tuesday, 13-12 and 10-5, at Captains Park.

Game one went to the international tie breaker rule in the eighth inning where Salisbury (10-4) was able to score one runner to earn the victory.

Ashley Stern was placed on second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Ali Ritter. One out later Kurisha Hoffman singled home the eventual game-winning run.

CNU (15-5) threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning but Salisbury forced the Captains out at home to preserve the victory.

Stacy Davis started the game but it was Kirsten Wells who came in on relief to pick up the victory.

Stern finished 2-of-5 for the game and threw out the potential game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. Meaghan Murphy went 4-for-5 from the dish while Nicole Fuqua had a multi-hit game for the Sea Gulls as well.

The Sea Gulls jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning in game two and used a five-run sixth inning to put the game out of reach for CNU.

Wells went the distance for Salisbury as she scattered eight hits and allowed five runs to pick-up her second win of the day and improve her record to 4-2 as a starter.

Kelly Waskewicz and Fuqua each homered in the game as they combined for seven of the team’s 16 hits. Waskewicz batted in a game-high five runs.Stern went 3-for-4 from the plate while Tee Droneburg reached safely twice.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Friday, March 16, as they host Capital and St. Elizabeth in a two-day round robin tournament. The games are set for Noon and 2 p.m. at Sea Gull Field.
