SSU'S Berkman to Play in Lacrosse World Games

Salisbury Head Coach Joins Former Sea Gull Werner in Masters Division

SALISBURY, MD -- Head Coach Jim Berkman of the Salisbury State University men's lacrosse team is suiting up once again. A former all-American midfielder as a collegian, Berkman is returning to active competition in this week's World Lacrosse Games in Baltimore. Berkman, 38, will play as a member of the Iroquois Nation team, one of five entries in the Masters Competition for players 35 years of age and older.

Salisbury State, in fact, will have two representatives in the World Lacrosse 98 Masters Competition, with Berkman competing against one of his players from this past season's SSU squad. Defenseman Tony Werner, who garnered national headlines as a 40-year old starter for the Sea Gulls, will be playing on the Lax World team.

The Masters Competition begins on Friday, July 17, with Berkman's Iroquois Nation team scheduled to play Werner's Lax World squad in the first game. The schedule features a four-game round-robin format for each squad, which continues through Sunday. The top two teams will meet in the Masters Championship Game on Tuesday, July 21. All the round-robin games will be played at the University of Baltimore's Speer Field. The championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.

Berkman, a native of Watertown, NY, was a four-year letterman at St. Lawrence (NY) University and earned all-America honors as a senior in 1982. He led the team in scoring each of his last three seasons and played in the prestigious North-South All-Star Classic in 1982.

"This is a great opportunity to play with some outstanding players," said Berkman. "Its exciting and fun to be part of a big event like this. The World Games is really a celebration of the sport."

Werner, from Glen Burnie, MD, joined the Sea Gulls this past season and his unique story received media attention from coast to coast. After serving as a police officer for 20 years, Werner returned to college to earn a teaching degree and completed his athletic eligibility as 40-year old member of SSU's defense. Salisbury State, NCAA Division III national champions in 1994 and 1995 under Berkman, finished 14-2 overall and advanced to the national semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in 1998.

The Masters Competition is just one part of the International Lacrosse Federation World Championship, or World Games, which returns to the United States for the first time in 16 years. The main competition will be played July 15-25 at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field. A record 11 nations are participating in the World Championship, a quadrennial event that features the finest men's lacrosse players in the world.

SSU's Run of Success

With 85 wins over the past seven seasons, the Salisbury State University men's soccer program has enjoyed its most successful period ever in its 62-year history. Each of the past seven seasons have yielded new records, milestones and accomplishments. Starting with the 1992 season, the Sea Gulls have continually built on their success. Up to that point, 1992 was the most successful season in SSU soccer history. In addition to setting a school-record with 13 victories, the Gulls won the Eastern States Athletic Conference championship, and also claimed the unofficial Maryland Division III title with a 4-0 record against in-state competition.

As an encore in 1993, the Sea Gulls earned their first postseason bid since 1985, finishing as the ECAC South Region runnersup. SSU won 10 of its final 13 regular season games to earn the bid, and enjoyed a school-record 10-game unbeaten string (nine wins and one tie) during the season. The offense set a new school-record for goals scored, while the defense posted six shutouts during the year. Once again, SSU also won all four of its games against in-state competition.

In 1994, the Sea Gulls moved into a new conference, the Capital Athletic Conference, and promptly claimed the the league's regular season title. SSU snapped Mary Washington's 30-match CAC winning streak, and posted a nine-game unbeaten streak while registering a 12-3-3 overal record. Along the way, the Gulls once again set a new team scoring record and tied the season record of 10 shutouts. Another unblemished record against in-state competition upped Salisbury's mark to 12-0 against Maryland rivals over a three-year span.

The Sea Gull program reached another milestone during the 1995 campaign as junior Matt Tirschman earned all-America honors, becoming just the second SSU player to ever be recognized on the national team. Tirschman, who scored 10 goals and added 11 assists during the 95 campaign, helped lead the Gulls to an 11-7 overall finish and a second consecutive runnerup trophy in the conference.

The Sea Gulls added 12 victories in 1996, and once again enjoyed streaks of success. SSU won six straight at one point while also compiling a seven-match unbeaten streak. Led by conference player-of-the-year Tirschman, the Gulls advanced to the conference championship game for the third consecutive year. SSU also continued its recent success against in-state competition with a 4-0-1 record against Maryland teams.

SSU completed another 12-victory campaign in 1997, with junior Mike Giuffrida filling the void as the team's designated record-setter. Giuffrida snapped a 25-year old record, the team's oldest individual mark -- most points in a season -- by finishing the year with 36 points. He guided the Gulls through a 6-1 conference season and another berth in the CAC Championship Game.

The 1998 season provided another assault on the recordbook during a 15-4-1 campaign. In addition to a school record for wins in a season, SSU set a new record for consecutive wins with an eight-game winning streak and tied the mark for longest unbeaten streak, 10. Individually, goalie Mike Svehla broke the career shutout record, while Giuffrida was named conference player of the year.

Sea Gulls Assault Recordbook During Successful 98 Campaign

With a 9-4 record in 1998 coming on the heals of a 10-5 campaign one year earlier, Salisbury State has recorded its winningest two-year stretch in the history of the women's lacrosse program. The Sea Gulls established numerous team records in 1997, then subsequently broke many of those marks in 1998 with a full assault on the team recordbook.

The Gulls tied the team record for most consecutive wins by winning their first five games of the 1998 season. As a sign of things to come, SSU scored 20 goals or more in two of those first five victories. The Gulls capped the streak with a 15-13 overtime win over eventual conference champion and NCAA quarterfinalist St. Mary's.

In 1997, the Sea Gulls earned the program's highest-ever national ranking, peaking at number two in the IWLCA/Brine poll. Building upon that success, SSU remained in the national top 20 for each poll during the 1998 season. The Gulls also remained in contention for a berth in the NCAA Championship Tournament down to the final week of the season.

SSU finished 4-1 during the Capital Athletic Conference regular season, tying for first place. Over the past two seasons, SSU has posted a cumulative 8-1 record in regular season conference games.

In 1997, the Sea Gulls established a new team scoring record with 165 goals in 15 games. Playing two games less in 1998, SSU shattered the one-year old record by finishing the year with 189 goals scored. Sixteen different players contributed at least one goal to the team's new scoring record. SSU scored 20 goals or better four times during the season, and eclipsed the 15-goal mark in seven of its 13 contests. SSU's 14.5 goals per game scoring mark was second-best in the conference in 1998, while its 9.7 goals allowed average was also second-best on the defensive end.

As a by-product of the team's offensive prowess in 1998, the Sea Gulls also shattered the team record for assists, finishing with 96. The old record of 73 had been in the books for 13 years. SSU also broke the single-game assist record with 14 during a 20-3 victory over Marymount.

Individually, several members of the 98 team will also leave their marks in the SSU recordbook. Sophomore Amanda Moculski tied the single-game assist record when she dished out five during an 18-13 victory over Frostburg State.

Senior Sandy Gilbart, who led the Sea Gulls in scoring with 40 goals and 13 assists in 1998, recorded the seventh highest single-season goal total in team history. Her 53 total points and 13 assists also rank among the all-time single-season leaders in both categories. Additionally, sophomore Annie Sappington's 17 assists placed her in a tie for the second-highest single-season total ever. Gilbart and senior Kelly Maloney also completed their careers ranked among the all-time top 10 assist leaders.

For the third straight season, the Sea Gulls placed six players on the postseason all-conference teams. Gilbart and Maloney were joined by senior midfielders Karen LaPolla and Laura Burkhouse on the CAC first team. Junior Courtney Ball and senior Kim Kirkbride were named to the all-conference second team. Kirkbride was also selected as a member of the South squad for the annual Division III North/South Senior All-Star Game, played as part of the STX Lacrosse Festival in Towson, MD.

Gulls End 98 Softball Season at World Series

For the second consecutive year, the Salisbury State softball team completed its most successful season ever. In 1997, the Sea Gulls set a school-record with a 33-14 campaign and advanced to the finals of the NCAA Tournament's Atlantic Regional. In 1998, the Gulls once again set a new victories record with a 36-10 mark while also capturing the Atlantic Region championship and earning the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III World Series. SSU placed fifth in the nation at the World Series in Salem, VA. The Gulls were ranked fourth in the season's final National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.

The expectations were high for the Sea Gulls in 1998, and the team lived up to its billing. Salisbury began the year ranked sixth in the preseason poll, and remained a fixture in the top 10 rankings throughout the year. Among the many records set during a remarkable season, the Gulls established a new mark for consecutive games won with a 12-game winning streak between April 4 and April 21. Salisbury State earned the number one seed for the NCAA Tournament's Atlantic Regional by winning 22 of its final 25 games to end the regular season.

The excitement didn't end in the playoffs. SSU claimed the championship of the rain-shortened Atlantic Regional by rallying for two runs with two outs in its final at-bat to defeat William Paterson 5-4. That victory propelled the Sea Gulls into the World Series for the first time in school history.

Salisbury State won its Series opener by a 5-1 count over Bridgewater State before losses to eventual champion Wisconsin-Stevens Point and defending champion Simpson eliminated the Gulls from the championship. Nevertheless, Salisbury State enjoyed a record-breaking season to remember, from its opening win on March 9 to its final out at the World Series on May 16.

Despite the final loss, the accomplishments of a memorable season were foremost in the mind of Coach Margie Knight. "To finish 36-10 and say we are down about it would be ridiculous," said Knight. "To even say that we were at the Division III World Series is a true honor. We finished fifth in the nation and that's not too shabby."

To the victors go the spoils, and the Sea Gulls enjoyed plenty of those in 1998. Two players, senior DP Myra Parks and senior 3B Jen Dodson, were named to the 15-player All-America first team. They were joined on the all-Atlantic Region first team by senior OF Kristin Heath and junior 2B Megan Hopper. Junior SS Stephanie Bennett was named to the all-region second team, and also earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the World Series.

SSU's murderer's row lineup virtually rewrote the team recordbook in 1998. The Gulls broke eight offensive team records, in addition to setting numerous individual season and career records as well. Parks capped her career as Salisbury's all-time home run leader with 29 and season RBI leader with 61. Dodson broke the season (22) and career (47) marks for doubles, while other individual record-setters included Bennett (season hits and runs), Hopper (season and career runs), and pitcher Kelly Bradford (wins and innings.)
