Women's Tennis Falls to Meredith,
6-3
Feb. 27, 2005
Raleigh, NC- The Salisbury University women's tennis team lost, 6-3, at Meredith
College on Sunday. The Sea Gulls were led by sophomores Erika Mitry and Jen
Rosler.
Mitry defeated freshman Staci Thomas,
6-3, in the No. 1 singles match, while Rosler defeated senior Patty Phiney, 8-6,
in the No. 2 singles match. Later in the day the duo of Mitry and Rosler won the
No. 1 doubles defeating Thomas and Phinney, 8-6.
The Salisbury women's tennis team is back
in action Saturday at Goucher.

Men's
Tennis Records Nine Wins at Drew
Feb. 27, 2005
Madison, NJ- This past weekend the Salisbury University men’s tennis team
picked up nine wins at the two-day Drew Invitational.
On Saturday, freshman Brendon
Kincaid defeated Vik Rao of Drew 6-2,6-3 in the No. 2 singles match. In the
No. 3 singles match sophomore James Mills
defeated Josh Rucker 4-6,6-2,10-5, while Senior Ryan Wendell picked up an 8-6 win over New York University’s Ross
Lieblich in the No. 5 singles match. In the No. 6 singles match sophomore Sean
Larson defeated Jon Pivor of Drew 6-2, 6-3. Later in the day, the duo of
Robinson/Wendell defeated NYU, 8-6, in the No. 2 doubles match.
On Sunday, Mills and Kincaid defeated the
No. 1 doubles team from Drew, 8-4. The pair went on to defeat NYU, 8-4. Also
coming up big in the No. 2 doubles match was the duo of Robinson and Wendell,
who defeated Drew 8-0.
The
Sea Gulls are back in action Saturday at Goucher.

Six Sea Gulls Set New Records at
Mason-Dixon Championship
Feb. 27, 2005
Newport News, VA- The Salisbury University men’s and women’s track and field
teams both finished third today at the Mason-Dixon Championship held at
Christopher Newport University. The men’s team finished with a total of 71
points just behind Methodist and CNU, while the women’s team finished with 69
points just behind Frostburg and CNU.
Freshman Casey
McInerny led the women’s team with two first place finishes and set a new
school record in the women’s 800 meter with a time of 2:22.37. The distance
medley relay of freshman Zuzka
O’Zwoldike, sophomore Ruth Hedrick,
junior Kristen Aversa and
McInerny also picked up a conference victory and set a new school record in a
time of 13:38.50 defeating the time of 13:42.38 set in 2003. Freshman Brittany Tesla also set a school record for her first place finish
in the high jump with a jump of 5’2”.
The men’s team finished the day with three conference
champions and three new school records. Senior Brandon Fields took first in the weights with a throw of 52’3
3/4” breaking his previous record of 47’ 6 ½”. Senior Tristan Gilbert also set a new record in the 800 with a time
1:55.83, while sophomore Buck Stokes finished
first in the 5,000 with a new school record of 15:46.10.
The Salisbury track and field teams are back in action on
March 5th when they host the Salisbury Track and Field Opener.

#13 Salisbury Sweeps Twinbill

Salisbury, Md. - The
No. 13-ranked Salisbury baseball team pounded out 30 hits and scored 44 runs
Sunday afternoon as the Gulls stretched their winning streak to five games with
a 24-1, 20-0 twinbill sweep of Staten Island at Sea Gull Field. The
double-header took 5:35 to play.
Salisbury
(6-1-1) scored 24 runs on 18 runs in the opener. Ten different Sea Gulls
recorded hits. SU was led by senior left fielder Mike Williams’ perfect
5-for-5 outing. He scored twice, while driving in four runs and drawing one
walk. Freshman third baseman Ryan McDougal was 3-for-5 with four runs
scored and one RBI. Sophomore second baseman Jessie Trout was a perfect
2-for-2 with two RBI, two runs scored and a walk, and senior catcher B.J.
Kittle went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored.
Eric
Bush (2-0)
recorded the win on the mound for Salisbury. He pitched five frames, allowing
one run on four hits while walking two and fanning three.
Senior
Tom Wohlfit (0-1) took the loss for Staten Island (0-2). He pitched just
two innings, surrendering four runs on two hits while striking out one and
walking four.
In
the second game, Salisbury scored 20 runs on just 12 hits and took advantage of
eight Dolphin errors. Senior shortstop David Sutton led the Gulls with a
3-for-4 game, recording one RBI and scoring two runs. Junior second baseman Greg
Lemons went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, two RBI and a walk. Junior
first baseman Nick Pegelow also went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a
walk. Trout was a perfect 2-for-2 from his DH spot.
Sophomore
Paul Kellner (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for SU, working six
scoreless frames while giving up only one hit.
Senior
Jesse Meiners (0-1) was the losing pitcher for Staten Island, allowing nine runs
(five earned) on three hits while walking six and striking out one.
Salisbury
will be back in action Tuesday when the Sea Gulls host The College of New Jersey
at 2 p.m.

Softball Takes Two From Wesley
Feb. 27, 2005
Salisbury, Md. - No.2-ranked Salisbury began
its 2005 campaign Sunday, sweeping Wesley, 7-0, 4-1, at home.
Junior All-American Lacey
Lister picked up the win in game one, allowing just two hits while striking
out 12. Sophomore Serena Fleming was 3-for-3, while junior Kristy
Shaffer went 2-for-3, with a HR and 2 RBI. Junior Erin Ruest and
sophomore Tee Dronenburg added two hits apiece.
In game two, freshman
hurler Kirsten Wells recorded the win, striking out seven in six innings
of work. Freshman Whitney Schrader went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run
scored, while Ruest added two more hits. Freshman Kortni Pedlow
picked up the save.
Wesley’s Jessica
Morgan went 3-for-4 on the day, with a double, and Jackie
Simmens knocked in the only
Wolverine run.
Salisbury
hosts McDaniel Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Women's Basketball Falls to UMW
in CAC Tourney Title Game

Fredericksburg, Va. - The University of Mary
Washington women's basketball team won its first ever Capital Athletic
Conference Tournament championship with an 84-62 victory over Salisbury on
Sunday in the 2005 CAC Championship. The Eagles (22-6), who broke the school
record for wins with their 22nd of the year, advance to the NCAA Division III
Tournament with the conference's automatic bid.
No.5-seed
Salisbury, which was looking for it’s first playoff appearance since 2002, had
knocked off #4-seed St. Mary’s (71-56) and top-seeded Marymount (67-57) to
advance to the title game. The Sea Gulls finished the season with a 15-13 season
mark.
The
Eagles came out strong, overcoming an early 9-6 deficit to maintain the lead the
rest of the way. UMW led, 44-33, at halftime, thanks to twelve first-half points
from sophomore Debbie Bruen and nine points from junior guard Jenn
Olinger.
The
Eagles steadily built the lead to twenty with 5:58 remaining, on the strength of
a balanced attack that included 20 points from Bruen, 15 from Liz Hickey
(as well as nine rebounds and six blocked shots), and 14 from Olinger. Lindsey
Forbush added nine points and five rebounds, Laura Hanks had eight
points, seven rebounds, and four assists, and Amanda Bates had seven
points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
UMW
shot 48.6% from the floor for the game, including 5-of-13 three point attempts,
while holding Salisbury to 31.9% shooting. The Eagles outrebounded the Sea
Gulls, 49-41. Salisbury was led by Jessica Mills' 16 points, as the lone
Sea Gull in double figures.
Mary
Washington will play in the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament,
which starts on Wednesday. The announcement of the bracket will be announced on
tonight at 10 p.m. Seedings can be found on the www.d3hoops.com

Mary
Washington had advanced to two NCAA Tournaments prior to this season, in 1993-94
and 1997-98.

Weather Forces Women's Basketball Schedule Change
Feb. 24, 2005
Thursday's night's CAC Tournament semifinal
round women's basketball game between Salisbury and Marymount in Arlington, VA
has been postponed due to weather conditions and rescheduled for Friday, Feb 25.
Game time is 6 pm.
The winner of Friday's semifinal game
advances to the CAC Championship Game, which has also been rescheduled from
Saturday, Feb. 26 to Sunday, Feb 27. The championship game will be hosted by the
highest remaining seed and will begin at 1 pm.
Friday's men's lacrosse home opener vs. Catholic
has also been postponed and rescheduled for next Friday, March 4. Game time at
Sea Gull Stadium will be 3:30 pm.
Friday's home baseball game vs. Eastern has also
been postponed and tentatively rescheduled for Saturday at 1 pm. A further
determination, pending field conditions, will be made on Friday regarding
Saturday's game status.

Women's Lacrosse Outlasts
Catholic, 15-4
Feb. 23, 2005
Washington, D.C. - The Salisbury women's lacrosse team held a 29-14 shot
advantage and opened the 2005 campaign Wednesday with a 15-4 victory over
Capital Athletic Conference foe Catholic. Five different Sea Gulls scored two
goals apiece. Lynsey Bateman, Linda Ackermann, Sarah Slafkosky,
Kate Scott and Erin McCarthy each put in a pair of goals. Amanda
Tack, Emily Dutch, Jessica Wirth, Jessica Froats and Katie
Simmons also scored in the game. Ali Goetz was the winning goalie
for SU. She surrendered two goals in 45 minutes of action. She recorded 10
saves. Teresa Rossbach also played in goal for the Sea Gulls, giving up
two goals while picking up four saves.

Men's Lacrosse Wins 28-3 at Marymount
Feb. 23, 2005
Arlington, VA - The number-one ranked men's
lacrosse team opened its Capital Athletic Conference schedule with a 28-3 win at
Marymount Wednesday as junior attackmen Dan Boyer and Chris Phillips combined
for 12 goals and four assists.
Boyer,
(pictured), who registered eight goals in SU's
season opener last week, added seven markers against the Saints. He also
recorded two assists. Phillips finished with five goals and two assists.
Other key offense contributors included
senior midfielder Justin Smith (2g-4a), junior
attackman Ryan Rohde (2g-2a) and senior midfielder Bryan Bradford
(2g-2a, 15 gbs). Three Sea Gull goalies combined for five saves in the game.
Weather permitting, Salisbury (2-0
overall) is scheduled to open its home schedule against Catholic on Friday (3
pm) in another conference match-up.

Baseball Blanks Christopher
Newport, 7-0
Feb. 22, 2005
Newport News, Va. - Senior All-America
starter Greg Lasinski and sophomore reliever Tom Howell combined
on a three-hit shutout as #13 ranked Salisbury blanked host Christopher Newport
7-0 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday. The Sea Gulls won their third
straight game to improve to 4-1-1 overall, while CNU drops to 2-5 overall.
Lasinski (1-0) allowed just two hits
while striking out eight in seven innings of work. Howell closed out the game by
allowing just one hit over the final two innings.
Junior outfielder Jason Lively finished
with a pair of singles and three RBI to lead Salisbury offensively. Junior 2B Greg
Lemon (3 runs), senior SS David Sutton (1 RBI) and senior catcher BJ
Kittle (2 runs) also finished with two hits apiece. Senior Mike Williams
added an RBI double for the Sea Gulls, who return to action at home Friday with
a non-conference game against Eastern.

Williams, Boyer Earn CAC Player of the Week Honors

Sophomore guard Ray Williams (Hanover,
MD/Ft. Meade) of the men's basketball team has been named the Capital
Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for his performance during the week
ending Feb. 20. Williams poured in 39 points in leading the Sea Gulls to
victories over Catholic, 64-57, and St. Mary's, 82-71. He turned in a 15-point,
seven-rebound performance against the Cardinals and then supplied the Sea Gulls
with a season-high 24 points and seven rebounds against the Seahawks. Since
returning to Salisbury's line-up nine games ago, Williams is averaging 12.3
points per contest.
Also, junior attackman Dan Boyer
(Millersville, MD/Mount St. Joseph's) has been selected as the Capital
Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for the sport of men's lacrosse for his
performance during the week ending Feb. 20. Boyer fueled the Sea Gulls' offense
in their season-opening 20-7 victory over Virginia Wesleyan by scoring eight
goals on eight shots.

Men's Basketball
Sophomore guard Ray Williams scored a season-high 24 points and guard Justin
Rice added 14 to lead Salisbury to an 82-71 Capital Athletic Conference win at
home over St. Mary's in the regular season finale for both teams. Salisbury
(10-15, 5-9) begins play in the CAC Tournament at Catholic on Tuesday.
Williams and Rice each scored 11 points in the opening half as the Sea Gulls
built a 42-33 halftime advantage. Salisbury never lost its lead in the second
half, although St. Mary's pulled to within three points at 54-51 with 10:47
remaining. Salisbury answered with a 9-2 run over the next 2:30 to push its lead
back to 10 points and led by no less than seven the rest of the game.
Junior Segun Odumeru added 11 points for the Sea Gulls, who carry a two-game
winning streak into Tuesday's CAC Tournament quarterfinal.
Senior forward Jeffrey Turner led a balanced St. Mary's offense with 21 points.
Stewart and Dan Engelstad contributed 19 apiece and forward TJ Jordan finished
with 10.
Salisbury 72, St. Mary's 60
Women's Basketball
Freshman center Kat Kordal registered a double-double with 15 points and 12
rebounds while junior guard Christen Barney scored a game-high 16 points as
Salisbury closed the regular season with a 72-60 CAC win over visiting St.
Mary's. The two teams will meet again Tuesday night at St. Mary's in the opening
round of the CAC Tournament. St. Mary's (14-10, 8-6) earned the home court and
number four seed despite the loss, while Salisbury (13-12, 7-7) enters the
tournament as the number five seed.
Senior guard Gen Olds, playing her final home game, added 11 points for the Sea
Gulls, including three of the team's eight three point field goals.
Freshman guard Megan Uglik led St. Mary's with 12 points, including two treys.
Katie Greenberg added 11, while Amanda Ballute and Kathryn Bozarth finished with
10 apiece. Salisbury led 38-28 at halftime and led by as many as 21 points in the
second half.
Salisbury Lacrosse 20, Virginia Wesleyan 7
Two-time defending NCAA Division III national champion and 2005 preseason #1
Salisbury opened the men's lacrosse season with a 20-7 non-conference victory at
Virginia Wesleyan Saturday. Junior attackman Dan Boyer fueled the offense by
scoring eight goals on eight shots for the Sea Gulls, who extended their winning
streak to 30 games, dating back to 2003. Senior midfielder Justin Smith and
junior attackman Ryan Rohde each added three goals and two assists. Junior
midfielder Mike Hurley finished with two goals and a team-high four assists and
junior Chris Phillips finished with two goals. The Sea Gulls led 8-1 at
halftime. Senior goalie Dan Korpon made 10 saves.
Salisbury Baseball Wins Two

The Sea Gulls improved to 3-1-1 overall with a doubleheader sweep at home
Saturday in non-conference play. Salisbury, ranked 13th in the nation, built a
6-0 lead through three innings in the opener and finished with a 7-1 victory.
Junior RHP Nick Dunk allowed one run and three hits in five innings of work to
improve to 2-0 on the season. Greg Lemon finished with three hits while Nick
Pegelow and Mike Williams added two hits each for Salisbury in the opener.
Salisbury rallied from an early 1-0 deficit with six runs in the fourth, fifth
and sixth innings for the 6-1 win in the nightcap. Junior RHP Eric Bush worked
five innings of two-hit ball for his first win of the year. The Sea Gulls
finished with just four hits in the nightcap, but took advantage of six walks
issued by E-town pitchers and two fielding errors. Elizabethtown falls to 0-2.
Two Track Records Set
The men's indoor track team set new school records at Saturday's George
Mason Invitational in Fairfax, VA. Junior Will Murdoch broke one of SU's oldest
records by establishing a new mark in the mile run with a time of 4:25.37 while
placing sixth in the event. The previous record of 4:25.60 was set by Jay
Udovich in 1980. Meanwhile, senior Tristan Gilbert broke his own record in the
800-meters with a time of 1:58.30, bettering the record by a half second. He
also finished sixth in the event.

Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader vs. Chowan

Salisbury and visiting Chowan split a non-conference doubleheader Sunday, with
the Sea Gulls winning the opener 8-1 but falling 5-2 in the nightcap.
Junior RHP Nick Dunk worked four strong
innings for Salisbury in the opener, allowing no runs and just two hits, while
picking up his first win of the season. Sophomore Dan Oleynik followed with
three innings of one-hit relief to earn his first career save.
Junior 2B Greg Lemon, junior 1B Nick
Pegelow and senior LF Mike Williams each finished with two hits and two runs
scored to pace the offense. Sophomore catcher Pete Callahan also added a
three-run double.
Chowan's freshman RHP Ryan Bennick kept
the Sea Gulls (1-1-1 overall) in check in game two, earning the complete-game
victory while allowing four hits and striking out nine. The Braves (1-2-1)
benefitted from four walks and a costly bases loaded error by the Sea Gulls in
the opening frame of game two to score five runs. Williams and Pegelow recorded
RBI singles to account for SU's single runs in the third and sixth innings.
Starter Scott Manko took the loss for Salisbury.

Baseball Opens With 7-7 Tie at Chowan

Murfreesboro, NC - The Salisbury University
baseball team opened its 2005 season with a 7-7 tie game at Chowan, called due
to darkness after 12 innings. The Sea Gulls and Braves will continue their
weekend home-and-home series with a doubleheader in Salisbury Sunday, starting
at 12-noon.
SU, ranked 13th in the national preseason
poll, rallied from a 6-2 deficit to force the deadlock. The Gulls scored three
runs in the seventh and two in the eighth inning. Juniors Jason Lively and Greg
Lemon paced SU's nine-hit attack with two hits apiece. Junior 1B Nick Pegelow
finished with three RBI and Matt Johnson knocked in two runs.
SU starter Greg Lasinski worked three
innings, allowing three hits and two runs. Scott Byers, Eric Bush, Tom Howell
and Lively all followed Lasinski on the mound for the Gulls. Both teams finished
with 11 runners left on base.

Track Teams Continue Assault on SU Recordbook

Newark, DE - Salisbury University's
season-long assault on the indoor track & field recordbook continued
Saturday as the Sea Gulls set eight new school records at the University of
Delaware's Thomson Invitational.
New SU women's marks were set by
sophomore Ruth Hedrick in the 500-meter run (1:22.05, 3rd place); freshman
Brittany Tesla in the high jump (5'1", 3rd place); freshman Casey McInerny
in the 1000-meter run (3:09.99, 5th place); and sophomore Calyin Offer in the
pole vault (8' 10 1/4", 9th place).
New men's records were established by
senior Brandon Fields in the weight throw (50' 5 1/4"); junior Will Murdoch
in the 3,000-meter run (8:56.10); senior Tristan Gilbert in the 1,000-meter run
(2:32.73); and junior Daryl Lee in the 500-meter run (1:08.65). All four Sea
Gulls finished fifth place in their events.
Salisbury's only first place victory came
in the men's 4 x 800 relay. The team of Murdoch, Lee, Gilbert and freshman Scott
Koehler recorded a non-record time of 8:16.39.
Overall, the SU men scored 115 points and
finished fourth of 14 teams. The SU women registered 77 points and placed ninth
of 14 women's teams.

Men's Basketball Loses Despite Placing Four in Double-Figures

The Salisbury men's basketball team
lost an 81-65 Capital Athletic Conference decision at Mary Washington Saturday
despite placing four players in double-figures.
Sophomore forward Rico Stewart paced the
Sea Gulls (8-15, 3-9) with 16 points and a team-high six rebounds. Senior center
Matt Fohner and sophomore guard Segun Odumeru added 14 points each for the
Gulls, who trailed 37-28 at halftime. Guard Justin Rice finished with 12 points.
Forward Jon Pierce led the Eagles (16-7,
8-4) with 20 points and 12 rebounds. He also converted five of UMW's 13
three-point field goals.

SU Track Records Fall at Hawk Games

The Salisbury men's and
women's track teams recorded several impressive performances at Saturday's UMES
Hawk Games in Princess Anne, including three new school records.
In the women's division, freshman Casey McInerny finished second place in the
mile-run with a time of 5:27.80, establishing a new SU indoor record. Sophomore
Ruth Hedrick finished 5th in the 60-meter high hurdles with a time of 10.02 secs
in the finals. Earlier, she posted a new SU record with a time of 9.99 during
the preliminary heats. Sophomore Calynn Offer added a second place finish for
the Sea Gulls in the pole vault at 8' 0."
On the men's side, sophomore Marcus Times was 5th in the 60-meter dash with a
time of 7.32 secs. His time of 7.24 during the preliminary heat broke the school
indoor record. Freshman Joe Collinson won the pole vault at 12' 0", junior
Will Murdoch was second in the mile with a time of 4:27.07, and junior Daryl Lee
placed second in the 800-meters in 2:02.81.

Kordal's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball

Freshman center Kat Kordal scored 13 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds to
lead three Salisbury players in double-figures in a 71-50 CAC win over Goucher.
Leading 32-25 at halftime, the Sea Gulls (12-9, 6-4 CAC) used a 14-0 spurt at
the start of the second half to seize control, opening a 46-25 lead. Kordal had
four points during the decisive run, while junior forward Kiera Watkins scored
five of her 11 points during the spurt. Goucher would get no closer than
16 points the rest of the way.
Junior guard Christen Barney added 10 points for the Sea Gulls, who limited
Goucher to 20.3% shooting for the game while forcing 21 turnovers. Freshman
guard Shadae Swan led the Gophers (2-16, 1-9 CAC) with 17 points, including
nine-of-11 free throws.
Goucher 69, Salisbury 58
Men's Basketball
Senior forward Garrett Smith registered a double-double with game-highs of 21
points and 13 rebounds to lead Goucher to a 69-58 Capital Athletic Conference
win at Salisbury.
Trailing 35-31 at halftime, the Gophers (15-6, 6-3 CAC) opened the second half
with a 10-0 run to claim the lead they would not lose the rest of the game.
Goucher's advantage grew to 57-44 on a lay-up from Smith with 8:50 remaining.
Salisbury (8-13, 3-7 CAC) pulled to within five at 61-56 on forward Rico
Stewart's trey with 2:40 left, but would get no closer. Stewart led the Sea
Gulls with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while guard Segun Odumeru added 16 points.

Swimmers Split in Home Finale;
Records Fall in Track Opener

The men's and women's swim teams split
their final home meet of the season, with the women posting a 135-70 win over
York, while the SU men lost 101.5 - 97.5.
On the women's side, the Sea Gulls picked up first place finishes in both the
200 medley relay and the 200 free relay. Sophomore Laura Allen paced the Gulls
with first place finishes in the 200 IM and the 100 breast. Salisbury went 1-2-3
in the 200-free when junior Aly Hammond took first, senior Amanda Lantz second
and junior Gwen Trice third. The women's team improves to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in
the Capital Athletic Conference.
The Salisbury men's team took a quick lead over York after securing first place
in the 200 medley relay. Yet, the Spartans squeaked by in the final event of the
meet, winning the 200-free relay with the Sea Gulls finishing a close second.
Junior Gary Stewart led SU with first place finishes in both the 200 IM and the
100 breast. The men's team drops to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the CAC.
The Sea Gulls are back in action Feb.18-20 at the CAC Championship meet in
Fredericksburg, VA.
The indoor track & field team opened its season
at the Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University.
K.C. Gale finished fourth in the women's weight throw with a school record of
47' 4", breaking the existing record by teammate Melissa Lewis of 43'
1" set in 2004. Gales' weight throw just missed the NCAA National
Provisional Qualifying standard of 48' 8 3/4".
Gale added a second school record in the shot put, establishing a new mark with
a throw of 35' 5 1/4", breaking the record of 34' 10 3/4".
On the men's side, senior Brandon Fields finished fourth in the weight throw
with a distance of 49' 1/4", just missing his own school record of 49' 1
1/2".

Basketball Loses in Home Twinbill to York

Junior guard Brandon Bushey scored a game-high 21 points to lead four players in
double-figures as visiting York registered a 75-67 Capital Athletic Conference
win at Salisbury.
The Spartans (16-2, 6-2) trailed 31-30 at halftime and used a 16-6 run midway
through the second half to seize control. York had its biggest lead at 65-54
with 3:26 remaining.
Salisbury (8-11, 3-5 CAC) closed to within four points twice in the final 1:21,
the last time at 69-65 on Segun Odumeru's jumper with 49 seconds remaining. York
then sealed the win with a jumper by Paddy Lee with 15 seconds left and four of
four free throws by Bushey in the final nine seconds.
Guard Ray Williams led the Sea Gulls with 17 points off-the-bench, including 13
in the second half. Forward Kyle Harmon finished with 16 points.
Forward Chad McGowan finished with 16 points for York.
York 79, Salisbury 76
Women's Basketball
In a game that featured nine ties and 15 lead changes, York converted three free
throws in the final 10 seconds to squeeze out a 79-76 CAC victory at Salisbury.
Senior Ashley Robertson's free throw with 10 seconds left proved to be the
game-winner for York (8-11, 3-5 CAC), while Heather Kessler and Kristen Daly
also added one free throw apiece in the final six seconds.
Salisbury (10-9, 4-4 CAC) had tied the game for the last time with 1:37 left on
forward Kat Kordal's lay-up. Trailing by six points at halftime, Salisbury had
rallied to claim a 10-point second half lead with 10:35 left. York then answered
with its own 10-point run to tie the score at 63 with 6:36 left. Neither team
led by more than four points the rest of the way.
Junior forward Kiera Watkins paced the Sea Gulls with 17 points, including
11-of-16 free throws. Kordal added 14, while Jessica Mills finished with 12
points and Gen Olds scored 11.
Daly recorded a double-double to lead York, finishing with game-highs of 19
points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Mike Wasilenko's driving lay-up with five seconds to go
lifted Catholic to a 54-52 Capital Athletic Conference win at Salisbury
Wednesday. With no timeouts remaining, Salisbury pushed to ball to the
frontcourt before Justin Rice's hurried jumper from the right corner
bounced off the rim at the buzzer.
Catholic improves to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the CAC, while Salisbury
falls to 8-10, 3-4 CAC.
Trailing by seven points with 53 seconds remaining, Salisbury tied the
score with 16 seconds left on Neal Tucker's three-point field goal.
Wasilenko then drove the length of the court for the game-winning
basket.
Sophomore guard Segun Odumeru led the Sea Gulls with 13 points, while
Tucker finished with 10 points and three of the team's five
three-pointers.
Junior forward Shane Sowden led Catholic with a double-double of 16
points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Scott Fumal added 12 points, including
three of the team's five treys.
Catholic 67, Salisbury 47
Women's Basketball
Tied at 23 at halftime, visiting Catholic outscored Salisbury 44-24 in
the second half to claim a 67-47 Capital Athletic Conference win.
Junior forward Kiera Watkins led the Sea Gulls with a game-high 22
points and team-high nine rebounds. She had 16 of the team's 23 first
half points. Junior guard Christen Barney added 13 points for Salisbury,
which falls to 10-8 overall and 4-3 in the CAC.
Four Cardinal players finished in double-figures, led by guard Lindsay
DiRomualdo with 14 points. Jackie DeBorger added 12 while forward Haley
Jones registered a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Catholic
extended its winning streak to six games while improving to 12-6 and 4-3

The Salisbury men's and women's swim teams posted Capital Athletic Conference
victories over visiting St. Mary's on Friday, with the SU men winning 135-43 and
the women prevailing 113-97.
In the men's meet, Salisbury (5-5) claimed first place honors in all 10 events.
Multiple individual winners included junior Kevin Bauer in the 400 and 800
freestyles and senior Adam Podolak in the100 back and the 200 free.
Other first place finishers for the Sea Gulls were sophomore Ralph Parker in the
50-free, junior Gary Stewart in the 200 IM, freshman Jon Sessums in the
100-butterfly, freshman Ross Spangler in the 100-free, and senior Ryan Kooy in
the 100 breaststroke.
The Salisbury women won five of 11 events to claim their fourth dual meet
victory in the last five outings. Individual event winners were senior Rachel
Lazarick in the 800-free, senior Ashley Letterman in the 100-back, and sophomore
Laura Allen in the 200-IM and 100-breaststroke. The Sea Gulls improve to 6-4
overall.
Senior Jacqueline Genau and junior Beth Dobson led St. Mary's with two
individual victories each. Genau placed first in the 200-free and the 400-free,
while Dobson won the 50-free and 100-free. St. Mary's falls to 0-5 on the men's
side, and 1-3-1 in women's competition.
Salisbury's regular season finale against York, originally scheduled for
tomorrow, January 22, has been postponed and rescheduled for Saturday, January
29.

Swimmers Lose in Dual Meet to CUA

Salisbury University's men's and women's swim teams both dropped dual meets to
visiting Catholic at home Sunday in Capital Athletic Conference competition. The
Sea Gull men lost 118-83, falling to 4-5 overall and 2-3 CAC. The SU women fell
116-89, and now stand 5-4 overall (3-2 CAC).
SU men's highlights included three individual first place finishes. Junior Kevin
Bauer won the 800-freestyle (9:43.26); junior Gary Stewart won the 200-free
(2:09.50); and senior Ryan Kooy was first in the 50-free (25.15 secs). Kooy also
added second place finishes in the 100-fly and the 100 breast.
Sophomore Laura Allen had two first place finishes to lead the SU women's team.
Allen won the 100-breast in 1:20.0, and also set a new pool record in the 400-IM
with a winning time of 5:30.84.
Senior Rachel Lazarick added a first place finish in the 800-free (10:06.60) and
junior Aly Hammond grabbed top honors in the 200-free (2:22.55).
Both Sea Gull squads are back at home Friday against St. Mary's.

Men's Basketball
Salisbury, MD - Guard Justin Rice scored a team-high 18 points and guard Segun
Odumeru added 16 points to lead Salisbury to an 81-63 Capital Athletic
Conference win over visiting Mary Washington.
Salisbury (7-8, 2-2 CAC) jumped out to a 15-2 lead over the first four minutes
and never trailed in the game. The Sea Gulls shot 58% from the field in the
opening 20 minutes while building a 46-25 halftime advantage. Rice scored 13 of
his points in the opening half, including three-of-three on treys.
The Sea Gulls scored the first 10 points of the second half to extend the margin
to 31 points at 56-25 with 16:51 remaining before Mary Washington began its
comeback effort.
The Eagles (10-5, 2-2 CAC) pulled to within 14 at 68-54 with 7:54 left, but
would get no closer. The starting backcourt of Mike Lee (19 points) and AJ
Fitzgerald (16) combined for 35 points to lead the Eagles, who had their
four-game winning streak snapped.
Guard Derrick Washington contributed 12 points and Neal Tucker finished with 11
as four Sea Gulls reached double-figures.
Mary Washington 62, Salisbury 55
Women's Basketball
Sophomore guard Debbie Bruen had a game-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds and
was one of three Eagle players to reach double-figures as Mary Washington downed
Salisbury 62-55.
Mary Washington (11-3, 4-0 CAC) led 29-27 at halftime and built its lead to 10
points early in the second half before Salisbury (9-6, 3-1) rallied. The Sea
Gulls claimed the lead at 43-42 with 10:06 left before Mary Washington answered
with a 7-0 run to to reclaim the lead for good.
Forward Kiera Watkins led the Sea Gulls with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Forward Jessica Mills finished with 11 points and guard Christen Barney added
nine..

Odumeru Named CAC Player of the Week

Odumeru (Riverdale, MD/Parkdale) has been named
Capital Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball
Player of the Week for his performance during the week ending Jan. 9. Odumeru
beat out five other nominees for the honor.
Odumeru tallied at least 20 points in all four of the Sea Gulls’
games last week, averaging 25.8 points per contest. Over the
course of the four games, he raised his season average three points to 18.9 ppg.
Odumeru also averaged 4.8 rebounds per contest last week,
including a season-high nine rebounds in the Christopher Newport
game. He was 41-for-78 from the field (.526) and 10-of-19 from three-point range
(.526) during the four games.

Swimmers Sweep Hood in Dual Meet

The Salisbury men's and women's swim teams
both returned from a long holiday layoff with wins on Saturday, sweeping host
Hood in a non-conference dual meet.
The SU men won 68-49, improving to 4-4
overall. The SU women registered their second highest point total of the season,
winning 144-107 to register their third straight win while improving to 5-3
overall.
The Salisbury women recorded six
individual event wins in addition to winning the 200 medley relay. Individual
winners were: Stephanie Failor (100 breast); Laura J. Allen (200
breast); Aly Hammond (50 free); Rachel Lazarick (100 free); Ashley
Letterman (100 back); and Hilary Yates (100 fly).
Individual event winners in the men's
competition were Adam Podolak (100 back); Ross Spangler (200 free)
and Gary Stewart (100 breast). The Sea Gulls also claimed wins in the 200
medley and 200 free relay events.
Both Salisbury teams return to action at
home on January 16 with a Capital Athletic Conference dual meet against
Catholic.

Barney Named CAC Player of the Week

University has been named Capital
Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for the sport of women’s
basketball for her performance during the week ending Dec.12. Barney beat out six other nominees for the honor.
Barney averaged 14.0 points per contest as the Sea Gulls
extended their current winning streak to six games by
defeating Washington (Md.), 76-66, and York, 90-72. She also
registered 12 rebounds and seven steals in the two games.
Barney is Salisbury’s leading scorer this season at 14.3
points per game.

Lader Named to Men's Soccer All-America Team

SALISBURY, MD - Senior midfielder Dan
Lader (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright HS) has been named to the National
Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America third team. Lader
becomes the eighth Sea Gull player in the history of the Salisbury men's soccer
program to earn the national honor.
The award is the third of the postseason
for Lader, who was also named as the Capital Athletic Conference's Player of the
Year as well as a first team all-South Region selectee.
Lader, a three-year starter, helped lead
Salisbury to its most successful season in 2004. He was third in scoring with
five goals, a team-high nine assists, and 19 points, while also helping the SU
defense record 13 shutouts.
Salisbury finished with a 20-1-3 overall
record in 2004 while claiming its fifth Capital Athletic Conference championship
and earning its fifth NCAA Tournament berth. The Gulls, ranked third in the
NSCAA's Top 25 poll for most of the season, advanced to the final four of the
NCAA's Division III Championship Tournament.
Previous Salisbury All-America recipients
were Sandor Fodor (3rd team in 1981); Matt Tirschmann (3rd team in 1995); Mike
Giuffrida (3rd team in 1998); Mike Svehla (3rd team in 1999); and Darren
LaRocque (2nd team in 2001); Mike Steinen (1st team in 2002); and Dan Meehan
(1st team in 2003).

DiBartolo Named NSCAA's South Region Coach of the Year
Salisbury's Gerry DiBartolo was
also recognized by the NSCAA this week as the South Region's Coach of the Year.
DiBartolo wins the award for the fifth time overall and for the third
consecutive season. He is now eligible for the NSCAA's national Coach of the
Year Award, to be announced next month.
DiBartolo led the Sea Gulls to a
record-setting 2004 campaign as Salisbury established new team records for wins
in a season and longest unbeaten streak, 23 games. He completed his 23rd year
with a career record of 261-137-29, including the 250th victory of his career on
October 6 against Goucher.

Salisbury Ranks Sixth in Newest Directors Cup Standings

Salisbury University ranks sixth among 415 NCAA Division III schools in the
newest All-Sports Directors Cup Standings, released by the National Association
of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.
The newest standings are based upon the completion of NCAA
championships in women’s and men's cross country, field hockey, women’s and
men's soccer, and women's volleyball. The
fall standings will be updated one more time following the completion of the
football championship tournament in two weeks.
The #6 ranking is Salisbury’s second highest ever,
bettered only by a fifth-place ranking in December of 2000. The Sea Gulls
enjoyed a stellar fall sports campaign in 2004, with four teams earning NCAA
Tournament berths. Salisbury claimed its second straight field hockey
championship while the men’s soccer team advanced to the final four. The
football and volleyball teams also earned NCAA appearances.
Salisbury finished 12th in the final Directors Cup
Standings for the 2003-04 academic year, and has finished in the top 20 in four
of the past five years.

Sea Gulls Place Four on All-South Region Men's Soccer Team

Following a
record-setting 20-1-3 season and first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championship
Tournament’s final four, the Salisbury University men’s soccer team had four
players named to the all-South Region team, as selected by the National Soccer
Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
All
four Salisbury players earned first team honors. They are junior forward Chris
Mills (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown HS), senior midfielder Dan Lader (Bel
Air, MD/C. Milton Wright HS), senior back Markus Hunkeler (Damascus,
MD/Damascus HS), and junior goalie Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach,
MD/Calvert HS).
Mills
finished second on the team in scoring in 2004 with 15 goals, six assists and 36
points. Lader was third in scoring with five goals, a team-high nine assists,
and 19 points.
Hunkeler
served as the anchor of the Salisbury defense, which registered 13 shutouts in
2004. He also collected six assists. Cranford started all 24 games in goal while
posting a 0.61 goals against average and an .849 save percentage.
Salisbury
set a new team record with wins in a season and also established a new record
with a 23-game unbeaten streak in 2004. The Sea Gulls suffered their only loss
with a 1-0 setback to eventual national champion Messiah in the national
semifinal on November 26.
All
four of SU’s all-region selectees are now eligible for consideration to the
NSCAA’s national all-America team, to be announced later this month.
Chamberlin Earns Field Hockey Coaching Award
Head
Coach Dawn Chamberlin of the 2004 national champion Salisbury field
hockey team has been named South Region Coach of the Year by the National Field
Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA). Chamberlin earns the award for the fifth
time in her career.
She
led the Sea Gulls to a 22-0 record and second straight NCAA Division III
national championship in 2004. The Sea Gulls capped their title run with a 6-3
win over Middlebury in the final game on November 20, extending their two-year
win streak to 33 games.
Chamberlin, who completed her 18th season with the Sea Gulls, has a 263-78-8
career record.
The
2004 Division III National Coach of the Year will be announced at the NFHCA
Awards Luncheon on January 8, 2005 in Providence, Rhode Island.

Awards Continue for Football, Volleyball Players

Four members of the Salisbury University football
team and one player on the SU volleyball team were among the honorees in the
latest national awards, announced on Thursday.
Senior
linebacker Brad DeHaven (Herndon, VA/Herndon HS) was selected to the 2004
Football Gazette’s All-South Region first team, while junior kicker Brock
Boland (Newfield, NJ/Delsea Regional HS), junior defensive lineman Andrew
Deming (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills HS), and sophomore cornerback Byron
Westbrook (Fort Washington, MD/DeMatha HS) were named to the second team.
The latest award is the second postseason honor for DeHaven, who was selected
last month as the Atlantic Central Football Conference’s Defensive Player of
the Year and a member of the ACFC’s first team defense. A four-year starter,
DeHaven led the Sea Gulls in tackles for the third straight season with 72 total
tackles and 19 tackles for loss (-100 yards).
Boland
set Salisbury records for field goals made in a season (14 of 18) and in a game
(three) this season, while finishing second on the team in scoring with 80
points. Deming led all Sea Gull linemen with 55 tackles, including 14 tackles
for loss (-57 yards) and five sacks. Westbrook set a new Salisbury season record
with eight interceptions in 2004 and finished third on the team with 56 tackles.
Salisbury finished with a final 10-1 record in 2004 while capturing the ACFC
Championship and earning a spot in the 28-team NCAA play-off tournament.
In volleyball, senior defensive specialist Kim
Rementer (Denton, MD/North Caroline HS) has been selected as one of just six
first-team members on the 2004 Academic All-America team, chosen by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and sponsored by ESPN.
Rementer, a psychology major, is one of two first team members with a perfect
4.0 grade point average. The senior led the Sea Gulls with 679 digs in 2004,
posting the third highest single-season total in team history. With 1,349 career
digs, she also concluded her four-year career ranked fourth on Salisbury's
all-time list.
The Sea Gulls captured their third Capital Athletic Conference volleyball
championship in 2004 and earned their third NCAA Tournament berth while
finishing with a final 25-12 record. A
two-sport athlete, Rementer is also a three-year starter as the catcher on the
nationally-ranked SU softball team.

Four Sea Gulls Earn Field Hockey All-America Honors

SALISBURY, MD – Coming on the heels of a perfect 22-0 season and a second
straight NCAA Division III national championship, four Salisbury University
field hockey players have been named as national all-Americans, as announced
today by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Their selections mark the 19th straight year that at
least one Sea Gull player has been represented on the NFHCA squad, recognized as
the official all-America team for the sport.
Three Sea Gulls were
selected to the 16-player first team: senior back Erin Budd (Delmar,
DE/Delmar HS), junior forward Brittany Elliott (Delmar, DE/Delmar HS)
and senior midfielder Melissa Webster (Deal Island, MD/Washington HS).
Sophomore forward Tracey Lloyd (Delmar, DE/Delmar HS) was
named to the second team.
Webster returns to the
all-America first team for the second straight year, while Budd, Elliott and
Lloyd receive the national honor for the first time each. Webster tallied 17
goals, nine assists and 43 points in 2004.
Elliott led the Sea Gulls and the Capital Athletic Conference in scoring
in 2004 with 23 goals, 12 assists and 58 total points. Her 58-point total is
tied for the second highest single-season output in SU team history.
Budd finished second on the team in scoring with 18 goals, 17 assists and 53
points. She set a new SU season record for assists in 2004 and capped her career
as the team’s all-time leader with 44 career assists.
Lloyd finished fourth on the
team in scoring with 20 goals, one assists and 41 points.
Salisbury defeated
Middlebury 6-3 in the national championship game on November 20, securing its
second straight and third overall national championship. The Sea Gulls also
established a new team record for victories in 2004 while also concluding the
year with a school-record 33-game winning streak.
