Volleyball Continues Winning Streak With 3-0 Victory
Preview: Mason Dixon Cross Country Championship
“We are going to have to run well to win,” said SU Head Coach Jim Jones. “The competition, in both the men’s and women’s races, is going to be tough. Christopher Newport and Mary Washington will likely be our biggest threats.” The last time the Sea Gulls captured a first place win at the event was in 1996 for the women and in 2002 for the men. “We really want to win this. It will boost our morale and help us psychologically for the upcoming CAC meet,” Jones said. Jones’ key for success is to place as many runners in the top 10 as possible. “We have to narrow the gap between our top runners. Teams like Mary Washington only have 44 seconds between their number one through number five runners. We will have to put the pressure on these teams when it gets down to race time,” he said. The Sea Gulls have a strong field of runners that have led the team to top finishes at all of their previous meets. Pacing the women’s team is a strong group that includes three freshmen, Laura Ulmer, Zuzka O’Zwoldike and Casey McInerny, as well as juniors Lauren Bragg and Amy Lang. The men’s team is led by juniors Scott Koehler and Will Murdoch. The top 15 runners in each division earn All-Mason-Dixon
recognition. “We really have our sights set for some top finishes,” Jones
added.

season at the 23:05 mark. Whittington, who leads Salisbury with
five goals on the season, created a 3-0 lead at the 57:49 mark when his shot

Casey McInerney Earns CAC Cross Country Honor
In leading the Sea Gulls to a fifth-place
finish at the Towson Invitational, the freshman completed the 5,000-meter race
in a time of 19:34, good for 13th place in a field of 122 competitors. She was
the top finisher for Salisbury and the top non-Division I finisher in a meet
dominated by Division I participants. McInerny is off to a strong start in her
collegiate career, placing among the team's top three finishers in both events
thus far. One week earlier, she finished third on the team and 14th overall
(among 87 runners) in Salisbury's home opener. McInerny and her Salisbury teammates
compete at the UMASS-Dartmouth Invitational in Massachusetts this weekend.
Field Hockey Stays Unbeaten With 9-2 Win
Six Starters Return for Defending Field Hockey Champions
As
one of only nine schools to capture the sport’s national title since its
inception in 1981, Salisbury rolled to a 20-1 record in 2003. Along the way, the
Sea Gulls captured their ninth straight Capital Athletic Conference championship
and earned their 19th trip to the NCAA postseason tournament in 20 seasons. Salisbury
dominated play a year ago with it’s defense, allowing just 0.67 goals per game
while opponents converted just 10.9% (14-of-128) of their shot attempts. Teams
attempted just 6.1 shots per game against SU. Salisbury outscored its opponents
81-14 during the season. The Sea Gulls, under the direction of Dawn Chamberlain
(241-78-8 in 17 seasons at SU), also have an outstanding offensive unit
returning this season. Six of the squad’s top seven scorers are back from
2003, including five of the top six goal scorers and the top three assist
producers. Brittany
Elliott, a
junior forward from Delmar, DE, leads the list of offensive returnees. She led
the team with 51 points last season, scoring 18 goals (tied for first on the
squad), while handing out 15 assists (T-1st).
Erin Budd, a senior back from Delmar, DE, was third in points
(37), while scoring 11 goals (third) and dishing out 15 assists (T-1st).
She was also second on the team with 92 shots. Elliott and Budd each led the Sea
Gulls with four game-winning goals in 2003. Sophomore
forward Tracey Lloyd, (Delmar, DE) was fourth on the team with 21 points
last season. She scored 10 goals, which was fourth on the squad. Other
returnees include sophomore forward Megan Powell (Elkton, MD), who scored
16 points on eight goals, senior midfielder Melissa Webster (Deal Island,
MD), who scored 16 points and was third on the team with 12 assists, and senior
forward Jess Dixon (Perryville, MD), who scored five goals and 12 points.
Webster garnered All-American honors for her efforts in
2003. Budd and Webster were named to the 2003 NFHCA All-South Region first team,
while Elliott earned a spot on the second team. Webster and Budd begin the 2004
season ranked second and third, respectively, in career assists leaders at
Salisbury. Webster has handed out 28 and Budd 27. The
Sea Gulls will have a new face in the goal this season. Junior Christine
Gonsalves (Germantown, MD) only logged seven minutes in goal last season.
She will be battling with sophomore Nicki Engler (Salisbury) and freshman
Maria Ramoundos (Gloucester, NJ) for playing time. Salisbury
opens the 2004 season Saturday with a CAC contest at St. Mary’s at 2 p.m. The
Sea Gulls’ home opener is set for Wednesday when they take on Christopher
Newport. SU hosts the Sea Gull Invitational on Sept. 11 and 12.
Men's, Women's Cross Country Ready for Opener
Jones’
expectations for the 2004 team are high. “As the defending men’s Capital
Athletic Conference champions, we hope that this season will be as successful as
the last,” said Jones. There
are a number of standouts on the Salisbury men’s team, led by senior Tristan
Gilbert, who was the 2003 CAC champion, and all-conference seniors Will
Detwiler and Brad Ellis.
Junior Will Murdoch and sophomores
Matt Vetter, Daryl Lee and Greg
Cooke hope to add to the success of the team.
“The
competition is going to be tough. Loyola was ranked in the top 25 in Division I
last season. We have been working hard and doing road miles to build up our
endurance for this meet. The guys are ambitious and want to win,” added Jones. Don’t
underestimate the SU women’s team. Juniors Lauren
Bragg and Amy Lang along with
sophomore Ruth Hedrick hope to lead
the Gulls to a top finish as well. “Bragg is a 2003 all-conference runner and
we have some great transfers and freshmen that make this a solid team,” said
Jones. “The teams are the best we have had for a long time and I am very
excited for them,” he added. Saturday’s
event begins at 10 a.m. with the women’s 6k race that will include teams from
Waynesburg, Messiah, Loyola, Slippery Rock, Christopher Newport, and New York
University. The men’s 8k race begins at 10:50 a.m. with teams from Waynesburg,
Messiah, Loyola, Slippery Rock and Christopher Newport.
Men's Soccer Hosts Fifth Annual
Shore Bank/Elmer Lord Tournament
Saturday,
September 4 Sunday,
September 5 Mount
Union, Hood and CAC foe St. Mary’s will join the Sea Gulls in the event, which
is sponsored this season by Shore Bank of Salisbury. While Hood is in its
inaugural season of soccer, Mount Union, St. Mary’s and SU each possess strong
established programs. Salisbury,
which is nationally ranked by the NSCAA/adidas (National Soccer Coaches Association of
America)
preseason poll, is coming off a 16-3-3 record a year ago and advanced to the
national quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament. SU, which has posted
12 straight winning seasons and won four of the last five CAC championships,
returns 22 lettermen off the playoff squad. The Sea Gulls opened the 2004 season
Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Lynchburg. “Normally
early in the year we’re trying to play a lot of players and see which ones are
ready and see who needs more time to make the jump to the college level,” said
Salisbury Head Coach Gerry DiBartolo. “But one of the critical aspects
of our team this year is our experience. With 22 returners, we have only five
new players on the team. So we know a lot about those players coming back and
we’ll mainly be trying to find the right combinations. And this tournament is
an excellent opportunity to begin that process.” The
tournament is named in memory of a very faithful and loyal Sea Gull fan, who was
a very positive supporter of Sea Gull men’s soccer. Salisbury University
presents the Elmer Lord alumni award at the conclusion of each season to the
senior who the team believes will be the next ideal soccer alumni.

Women's Soccer Faces Busy Opening Week
The
Gulls return seven starters, including five of last year’s 10 leading scorers.
After finishing the 2003 season with a 9-8-2 record, the Gulls have high
expectations for the 2004 season. According
to fourth-year coach Jim Nestor, “we have a well-rounded team this
season.” The
Gulls have a solid backfield with team captains Dana Verdi and Candice
Hills anchoring the defense. Captain Leanne Argue, junior Heather
Pallett and sophomore Meghan Mabey headline the midfield. Junior Jeanine
Swezey, sophomore Sara Nickoles and sophomore Natalie Day are
the top returning forwards. Goalies Katie Hendrickson and Samantha
Phipps return from last season with their combined 73 saves. Colleen
Evans, Sharon
Asmussen, Stacey Pokrywka, Nickoles and Day are expected to lead the
offense again this year after scoring a combined 14 goals in the 2003 season.
The SU defense allowed only 1.04 goals per game during the 2003 season and
should be strong again this season. In
last season’s match-up with Villa Julie, the Gulls shut out the Mustangs 4-0.
The Gulls face their biggest challenge of the week against Messiah, which begins
the 2004 season ranked 21st in the nation. As last year’s MAC Commonwealth
Champions, Messiah finished with a 16-2-3 record. “They are expected to have a
solid team again this year,” said Nestor. Sunday’s
game with Wisconsin-Stout rounds out a busy week. Wisconsin-Stout finished the
2003 season with their best-ever record at 12-7. The Blue Devils return 18
letter winners, including their top six scorers. “A
tough first week will be a good test of our team’s strength this season,”
said Nestor. “We can only hope that we play well in the season opener. You
never know what will happen and we have to be prepared for anything. We have a
solid group of players and we’re ready for action on Wednesday.”
Sea Gull News and Notes
"Running in this event is a good way
for some of the high school and college runners to get started for the upcoming
season," said Jones. "But it's also something healthy and beneficial
for all members of our community. Those who want to walk instead of run are also
welcome." Proceeds from the event help the
department maintain and improve park facilities. Further information is
