Three Sea Gulls Receive USILA National Awards
Andy Murray Named Division III
Player of the Year Junior
midfielder Andy Murray (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial HS) was a two-time
honoree, winning both the Fran McCall Award as the Midfielder of the Year as
well as the Iroquois National Award as the Division III Player of the Year.
Murray scored 24 goals and registered 41 points for the Sea Gulls in 2003 while
also serving as the team’s face-off specialist and also leading the squad with
211 groundballs. Junior
defenseman Eric Martin (Norfolk, VA/Norfolk Academy HS) was the winner of
the William Stiles Award as the nation’s top defenseman. Martin led an SU
defense that finished seventh in the nation in fewest goals allowed (6.3/game).
He also finished second on the team with 113 groundballs. Senior
Josh Bergey (Chadds Ford, PA/Tatnall HS) won the Colonel Jack Turnbull
Award as the nation’s top attackman. Bergey finished third in the nation in
scoring with 72 goals and 120 points in 2003. Salisbury
defeated Middlebury 14-13 in overtime in last month’s national championship
game to claim its fourth NCAA Division III title since 1994. The Sea Gulls led
the nation in victories and set a new season record for wins while finishing
with a final 19-1 record. Murray,
Martin, Bergey and sophomore defenseman Jeff Bigas (Media, PA/Penncrest HS)
were all named to the USILA’s 11-player All-America first team.

named to the All-America second team, while sophomore attackman Chris
Phillips (Media, PA/Penncrest HS) and junior midfielder Cory O’Neil

finished with four goals and Lauer added one to lead the South All-Stars to a
14-11 victory in the game played at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.
Sherman Wood to Intern With
Cincinnati Bengals
Salisbury, Md - Salisbury University’s Head Football
Coach Sherman Wood will be reporting to training camp with the Cincinnati
Bengals this summer as a participant in the NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship
Program. Wood will be with the Bengals from July 27 through August 10 at
training camp at Georgetown College in Kentucky. He returns to Salisbury for the
start of SU’s preseason football camp on August 17. Wood
will serve as an assistant with the defensive line during his two-week stint at
Head Coach Marvin Lewis’ first training camp. Wood, who also joined the
Bengals for a three-day mini-camp last month, will conclude his internship with
Cincinnati’s first preseason game against the New York Jets. “This
is a wonderful opportunity for me as well as for our school,” said Wood, who
guided the Sea Gulls to a 9-2 record and first NCAA playoff appearance in 16
years last season. “This is a valuable professional development opportunity
and also helps to expand our program’s profile among a lot of big-time people.
I’m looking forward to learning and improving on my skills as a coach. I
certainly hope to enhance our program with some of the things that I learn from
the Bengals.” Lewis,
one of the NFL’s three African-American head coaches, is also a by-product of
the league’s Minority Coaching Fellowship Program, having spent three weeks
with Bill Walsh’s 49ers in 1988 while he was a young assistant coach at Long
Beach (CA) State. “This
program opens doors for people,” said Lewis, who is entering his first season
as an NFL head coach. “People get more comfortable with them and we get to
learn about them as not only a coach, but as a person. It’s helpful because
people want to see how you react to the professional player. Knowing that it’s
not too big for you.” More
than 700 minority coaches have participated in the program since its inception
in 1987. Seven of Cincinnati’s 16 coaches are African-American and of those,
five have participated in the internship program. Wood,
now in his fifth year at Salisbury, has always put an emphasis on professional
development. A frequent visitor to NFL training camps in the past, Wood already
knows Lewis from his visits to the Ravens and Redskins camps in previous years. “You are enhancing professional development through this program and I’m huge into professional development,” said Wood. “It’s real important to me. That’s why I take five or six assistants with me to every coaching convention. This experience with the NFL is something I can add to that.
ACFC Adds Two New Football Teams
The Atlantic Central Football Conference has announced two
additions to the football only conference beginning in 2004.
Brockport State and Buffalo State will join Newport News Apprentice,
Frostburg State, Salisbury University and Wesley in the fall of 2004 with a full
conference schedule. SUNY Brockport, an NCAA playoff team in each of the last
three seasons, advanced it to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2002. The Golden Eagles
were 10-3 last year and named ECAC and Lambert Cup Team of the Year for Division
III. Brockport, coached by Rocco
Salomone, finished the season ranked 13th in the final AFCA coaches poll.
Buffalo State, coached by Bob Swank, has a long history of excellence on
the gridiron. From 1990 to 2000,
the Bengals compiled an 85-30 (.739) record while appearing in seven NCAA
playoffs. “I’m pleased with how this process has developed and I
think it’s a win-win situation for all the parties involved,” says Salisbury
Head Coach Sherman Wood. “I really see this as a first step for the
ACFC. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other teams added in the future, with the
league eventually expanding to 10 or 12 teams. Of course, we want to do what is
best for our student-athletes. We’ve put together a fair schedule for
everyone. All the coaches seem pleased with the 2004 schedule.” In the short history of the Atlantic Central Football
Conference, two teams have represented the ACFC in the NCAA Tournament: Wesley
College in 2000 and Salisbury University in 2002. Born in 1998, the ACFC did not name a champion during its
inaugural season. Frostburg State won the first official title in 1999, followed
by Wesley in 2000 & 2001. Frostburg
State won its second conference crown in 2002. With the addition of Brockport
State and Buffalo State, five of the six ACFC teams have NCAA playoff
experience. The Atlantic Central Football Conference begins the 2003 season on September 6

Gulls Secure Four #1 Seeds for CAC Tournaments
Championship Week has arrived for all of the Salisbury University spring sports teams as they battle for Capital Athletic Conference titles this week. Four Sea Gull squads - baseball, softball, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse - secured #1 seeds for their respective CAC Tournaments by virtue of finishing first in the regular season. Those teams will maintain home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Four other teams, the men's and women's track teams, and men's and women's tennis teams, travel to Fredericksburg, VA, with Mary Washington serving as pre-determined host of those championships. The baseball team (22-8-1 overall) hosts #6 seed Gallaudet in its first round game on Tuesday. The Gulls then play either Catholic or York in the second round on Thursday. The baseball tournament continues through Sunday, with all weekend games also hosted by the Sea Gulls, who are trying to capture their fourth straight CAC title. The softball team (28-3-1) hosts the four-team double-elimination finals on Saturday and Sunday as the Gulls chase their seventh CAC crown. Salisbury begins play against either #4 Catholic or #5 Gallaudet on Saturday. The men's lacrosse team (12-1 overall) earned a first round bye and hosts either #4 Goucher or #5 Marymount in Thursday's semifinal round game. A victory moves SU into Sunday's championship contest. The CAC Tournament winner receives an automatic berth for next month's NCAA Championship Tournament. The women's lacrosse team (10-1) also earned a first round bye and hosts either #4 Marymount or #5 Goucher in Friday's semifinal round game. Like the men, a victory moves SU into Sunday's championship game, also to be played at home. The Gulls bring an eight-game winning streak into this week's CAC Tournament. The baseball, softball and women's
lacrosse teams are all ranked in the national polls and all hope to receive
at-large bids for their respective NCAA Championship Tournaments. Unlike men's
lacrosse, the conference champion does not receive automatic bids in those
sports.

Tennis Teams Aiming for Strong Finish
Salisbury, MD - The Salisbury University men's and women's tennis teams each have four matches left this season before the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, in Fredericksburg, VA, on April 26-27. The men and women are both coming off losses at Mary Washington on Sunday. The women (7-5 overall) suffered a disappointing 5-4 defeat, while the men (4-9 overall) took a 7-0 loss. "We had a very tough weekend against Mary Washington, however, in general, I feel good about where our teams are at this point. I feel the most important part of our season is coming up," said fourth year Head Coach Randy Halfpap. "The men have been improving with each match and the women have suffered a couple of tough losses. Hopefully, we can respond and bounce back to accomplish the goals we set at the beginning of the season. We will be able to tell a lot more after the upcoming stretch." The men have home matches against Rochester, UMES, Johns Hopkins and Washington. The women have an important CAC match-up at Catholic to be rescheduled from an April 10 postponement. They also have home matches against Muhlenberg, Johns Hopkins and Washington. "I think our best tennis is still ahead of us," said Halfpap. "We'll hopefully peak at the right time. We have two and a half weeks left in the regular season and we're hoping the loss to Mary Washington will light a fire in the team and turn into a positive for us." A few bright spots have emerged thus far this season. On the men's side, freshman Tyler Robinson has moved from the four spot in the lineup to number three. He has won four out of his last five matches since the change and has added a much-needed spark to the top of the lineup. For the women, junior Samantha Coldren has also won four of her last five matches. Junior Cassie Meyer has also played well, picking up big wins against Carnegie Mellon and Mary Washington. "The men's team is slowly but surely getting better, said Halfpap. "We are taking it match by match. "I think experience has made a difference. Hopefully we can start winning some of the close matches we lost in the beginning of the season." Halfpap added: "The women will
hopefully find a way to win. We need to win all four of our remaining matches
and have a successful run in the CAC tournament to reach the NCAA Regionals and
accomplish our goals set at the beginning of the season."

Women's Lacrosse Enjoying Strong Start
Salisbury,
Md - With a 7-1 overall record and 3-0 conference mark, the Salisbury women’s
lacrosse team is off to its best start since opening with a 10-1 record during
its 2000 Final Four season. Salisbury carries a five-game winning streak into
Wednesday’s non-conference game at Virginia Wesleyan. “Everything
is going pretty well for us right now,” says second-year Head Coach Jim
Nestor, who has seen his team climb to #10 in the IWLCA national poll after
beginning the year ranked 18th. “We also know that we are now heading into
the toughest part of the schedule.” Following Wednesday’s game, the Sea Gulls host
back-to-back games against their two primary competitors in the Capital

Mary Washington on Wednesday, April 16. The Gulls also host #18 Colorado
College on April 19 before beginning play in the CAC Championship Tournament. Contributions from a number of newcomers have helped key
Salisbury’s strong start, which continued with a 19-3 victory at cross-state
rival Frostburg last Saturday. Freshman Lynsey Bateman

through eight games). A balanced offense also features five other players with

their games.” Sophomore
