Sea Gulls Host Marymount in CAC Women's Basketball Championship
Feb 28, 2003

Winner Claims Automatic Bid for NCAA Tournament; Game Time is 2 p.m.
Salisbury, Md - The Salisbury women’s basketball team welcomes a familiar opponent to the Maggs Center for Saturday’s Capital Athletic Conference Championship Game. Salisbury, seeking its fourth straight CAC title and NCAA Tournament berth, faces Marymount for the third straight year in the championship game.  The showdown between the tournament’s top two seeds is set for 2 p.m.

The #1 Sea Gulls (23-4) and #2 Saints (21-6) are facing each other for the 11th time in the past three seasons. They split their two regular season contests this season, with Salisbury winning 74-61 at home on January 29, and Marymount prevailing 62-52 at home on February 19.  That loss snapped a 12-game Salisbury winning streak.

Salisbury advanced to Saturday’s championship after dismissing #8 Gallaudet 92-51 in Tuesday’s quarterfinal and clipping #5 Catholic 54-49 in Thursday’s semifinal. Marymount advanced with victories over #7 Goucher and #6 Mary Washington.

Salisbury is making its sixth overall appearance in the CAC Championship Game. The Gulls have met Marymount in four of their previous five title game appearances. Marymount defeated Salisbury in the 1995 and 1996 championship games, while Salisbury has defeated Marymount in each of the past two years (70-67 in 2001, 71-56 in 2002). The home team has won each of those games. SU also beat St. Mary’s in the 2000 championship.

The Sea Gulls have won 15 of their last 16 games this season and have claimed victories in 50 of their last 53 CAC regular season and tournament games since 2000. Currently riding an 11-game winning streak in CAC Tournament games, SU is trying to become just the second team in conference history to win the championship for at least four straight years.

With 23 victories this season, Salisbury is one win away from tying its single-season record for wins. SU has posted 24 victories in each of the past two seasons.

Team defense has been one of the keys to Salisbury’s success throughout this season. The Gulls have held four of their last six opponents to less than 60 points scored. Opponents have a 38.0% field goal shooting percentage, including 31.1% for Gallaudet and 22.7% for Catholic in this week’s CAC Tournament games.

The field for 2003 NCAA Championship Tournament will be announced on Sunday evening, March 2. The CAC Tournament winner will receive one of 37 automatic bids, while the runnerup will vie for one of the 13 at-large spots. Tennis Teams Swing Into Action This Week
Feb 27, 2003

Salisbury, MD – After four weeks of preseason practice, the Salisbury University men’s and women’s tennis teams officially begin their 2003 campaigns with non-conference matches this weekend. The SU women travel to Haverford for a noon match on Saturday. The men open the season at home against Carnegie-Mellon on Sunday at 10 am.

The Sea Gull women hope to build on their first Capital Athletic Conference Championship, second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, and a 14-4 record in 2002.  The men are coming off their second straight second place CAC finish and hope to improve on their 5-12 record from a year ago.

“We are definitely ready for this season,” said fourth year Head Coach Randy Halfpap.  “We have
been practicing for four weeks and you can tell that our teams have been working hard.”

The women are ranked 17th the preseason Omni Hotels Collegiate Division III Tennis rankings.
They will look to senior captains Jody Cogar (Lake Placid, NY/Seton Catholic) and Heather
Tyng (Columbia, MD/ Hammond)
for leadership this season.

“We are ranked higher than ever.  We want to go out and prove that we belong at that ranking,” said Halfpap.  “We have a lot of talented players.  Our line-up will change from match to match and will
depend on who is having a good day.”

The men’s team will not feature any seniors this season.  The Sea Gulls will look to junior captains
Scott Mayberry  (New Market, MD/ Linganore)
and Nicholas Peel (Johannesburg, South
Africa/ King Edward VII)
to provide stability to a young team.

“We struggled last season from a lack of experience,” said Halfpap.  “We are still pretty young.  We
are just trying to get better with each match and build on that.”

Both the men and women have been practicing and conditioning relentlessly to enable them to reach
the team goals set forth at the beginning of the preseason.

“We want our men to improve month by month and continue to improve each time out.  We want them
to become better, building both their confidence and skill level.  That would be just as rewarding as a championship.”

Halfpap added that: “Our women are trying to reach the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive
season and attempting to uphold our number 17 ranking in the country.”

The Sea Gull men continue their home slate against Virginia Wesleyan on March 8, while the women
begin their home schedule against St. Mary’s on March 9.  The men will also play St. Mary’s that day.

Swim Teams Preparing for CAC Championship Meet
Feb 5, 2003

Salisbury, MD – The Salisbury University men’s and women’s swim teams will conclude the 2003 season at the three-day Capital Athletic Conference Championship meet, February 14-16, at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, VA.

“We are very anxious to get to the championships,” said eighth year Head Coach Jill Stephenson.  “We have been gradually reducing the practice load through a taper to be physically ready.  Two and a half weeks between meets will also help us to be mentally ready.”

Mary Washington is the championship favorite for both the men and women, having gone undefeated during the regular season.  The SU men and women, which both finished at 3-4 in the conference, could finish the championships anywhere from third place to fifth place according to Stephenson.  Other teams to watch will be Catholic, York and Marymount.

“All of the teams in the conference are equally matched,” said Stephenson.  “It will depend on how many we can put into the top 12 spots in the morning (qualifying heats) in order to earn us points in the afternoon.  Where we finish will come down to the last couple of events.”

The top individual swimmers for the SU women will be sophomores Ashley Letterman (breaststroke/fly) and Lindsay Canover (IM/butterfly), as well freshman Aly Hammond (freestyle).  The men’s swimming power will come in the distance events with seniors Ben Davis (distance) and Bobby Klaslo (distance) pacing the Gulls.

Another strong event for the Sea Gull men will be breaststroke with senior J.J. Laskiewicz (breaststroke) and sophomore Ryan Kooy (breaststroke) leading the way.  Both teams will also rely heavily on the efforts of its relay teams.

“The team has been practicing really well, which is a good sign,” said Stephenson.  “They are very energetic and ready to go.  I am confident they will be swimming very fast.”

He is joined by Ralph Paden (Fairmont Heights HS) and Morgan Wootten (DeMatha HS) in the class of 2003. The addition of these inductees brings the Hall of Fame’s membership to 53.
