Sea Gulls Finish 54th in Sears Cup Ranking
June 18, 2002

DALLAS, TX - Salisbury University placed 54th overall in the final 2002 Sears Directors’ Cup rankings for intercollegiate athletics, released Tuesday. Salisbury finished with 240 points earned during the 2001-02 academic year.  Schools accumulate points based on their success in post-season play for all sports. Of the 395 eligible colleges and universities in the NCAA’s Division III, a total of 270 (68 percent) scored points in this year’s Sears Directors' Cup competition.

The award is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country.  The Sea Gulls were the second highest ranking member of the Capital Athletic Conference as well as the second highest ranking school in Maryland in 2002.

Salisbury, which placed 15th in the final standings last year and 18th in 2000, climbed nearly 100 spots in this year’s ranking during the spring sports season. Ranked 140th following the winter season, the Sea Gulls earned points in four sports during the spring, highlighted by the softball team’s appearance in the World Series. Salisbury had six of its 19 sports represented in NCAA Tournaments and Championships during the 2001-02 year.

Of the seven years that the award has been presented, Salisbury has finished no lower than 54th among the nearly 400 schools that comprise the NCAA’s Division III ranks.  Previous Sea Gull finishes were: 51st (1996); 25th (1997); 45th (1998); 34th (1999); 18th (2000); and 15th (2001).

Williams (MA) College repeats as the overall NCAA Division III winner in 2002, claiming its sixth Sears Directors' Cup in the last seven years with 989 total points. Ithaca (NY) finished second (852), New Jersey placed third (751), Middlebury (VT) was fourth (703) and Emory (GA) was fifth (673).

Each year, the Sears Directors' Cup program, presented in partnership by Sears and NACDA, awards Waterford Crystal trophies to the top athletics programs in NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA. The Sears Directors' Cup program is the only all-sports competition that recognizes the institution in each of the four categories with the best overall athletics program.  Complete final rankings on all of the institutions are available on NACDA's home page at www.nacda.com.

Men’s Lacrosse Preview
Saturday, May 4, 2002
1:00 p.m. – Salisbury, MD

The Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team closes out its regular season against arch rival Washington (Md) in a non-conference game at home on Saturday.  Game time at Sea Gull Stadium is 1 p.m.

Records and Rankings
Salisbury is 12-3 overall and ranked sixth in the latest USILA Division III national poll.
Washington is 11-3 overall and ranked fifth.

Sea Gulls Riding Three-Game Win Streak
Salisbury enters Saturday’s game with a three-game winning streak. The Sea Gulls have also won seven of their last eight games, dating back to March 21. The only loss during that stretch came at #2 ranked Gettysburg, 12-8. Salisbury is 7-2 in home games this season, including a 20-12 victory over Virginia Wesleyan last Saturday. The team’s current winning streak includes two victories in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. SU captured its eighth straight CAC title with an 18-7 win over Mary Washington on April 21.

Last Year vs. Washington
Salisbury registered an 8-7 win over the Shoremen in Chestertown last year, their 10th victory in the last 11 regular season match-ups between the teams. Cory O’Neil scored twice and six other Sea Gulls scored once as SU, ranked #4 at the time, built a 5-2 halftime lead and never trailed in the second half to defeat #12 ranked WC. The 15-goal total was the lowest combined score in series history, and the only time that the winning team scored less than 10 goals.

Sea Gull Notes
The Salisbury offense features 11 players with at least 10 goals scored this season. Sophomore attackman Andy Arnold leads the Gulls in goals (32), assists (25) and total points (57). Senior attackman Steve Brianas is second on the squad in goals (27) and points (34), with freshman Chris Phillips second in assists (16) and third in points (31).  Sophomore Scott Simmons is the leading goal scorer among the midfielders with 20 goals and 27 total points. Sea Gulls claimed all three of the top individual awards presented by the Capital Athletic Conference last week. Murray was tabbed as the CAC’s Player of the Year, with freshman defenseman Jeff Bigas named as Rookie of the Year and Jim Berkman selected by his peers as the 2002 Coach of the Year.

The Salisbury-Washington Series
The Eastern Shore rivals are meeting for the 33rd time in a series that dates back to 1974.  Washington leads the series 18-14, although Salisbury has won three of the last four encounters and 12 of the last 16 since 1991. The Sea Gulls have won 10 of the last 11 regular season meetings to even the series record at 12-12 in regular season match-ups. Washington’s only victory during that period came in 2000, the last time WC visited Sea Gull Stadium during the regular season. Washington holds a 6-2 advantage in postseason games played between the teams.

What’s Ahead
By virtue of winning the Capital Athletic Conference championship, the Sea Gulls have already clinched an automatic berth for the 16-team NCAA Tournament. The baseball team, ranked #9 nationally, has secured the #1 seed for the CAC Baseball Tournament following an 8-2 regular season record. The Gulls (20-7-3 overall) begin play with single games at home on Tuesday (3:30 pm vs. Gallaudet) and Thursday (3:30 pm vs. Mary Washington or Catholic), then host a four-team, double-elimination championship on Saturday and Sunday. The Gulls are hoping to claim their third straight CAC title.

SU (28-7 overall) hosts the two-day, double-elimination event on Saturday and Sunday. Salisbury, which extended its current winning streak to nine games with a doubleheader sweep at Wesley on Sunday, will try to claim its sixth straight CAC crown. Salisbury plays Washington (Md) in a non-conference doubleheader at home Wednesday prior to this weekend’s CAC Tournament.

The Sea Gulls earned a first round bye after finishing 6-0 in the regular season. SU hosts Goucher in the semifinal round at 4 p.m. on Friday. A victory would move the Gulls into Sunday’s championship game, also at home.

The women’s lacrosse team (7-5 overall) will have to make its championship run mostly on the road after finishing as the #3 seed in the regular season. Salisbury opens at home against Marymount on Tuesday (4 p.m.), and with a victory advances to play at #2 seed Mary Washington on Friday. The championship game will be hosted on Sunday by the highest remaining seed.

The SU tennis teams also host the CAC Tournament this weekend. The two-day event, on Saturday and Sunday, will crown six singles champions and three doubles champions for both the men and women. The Sea Gull men (5-11 overall), past team champion four times, will try to reclaim the team title for the first time since 1999. Meanwhile, the SU women (11-3 overall) are hoping to break Mary Washington’s 11-year hold on the women’s championship.

The men’s and women’s track teams travel to Towson for their CAC Championship Meet on Saturday. Goucher is serving as first-time host for the championship.
