SWIM TEAMS EVEN THROUGH SIX MEETS
November 20, 2001

Salisbury, MD – The Salisbury University men’s and women’s swim teams have battled through nagging injuries to go 3-3 in the first half of the season.

“We are swimming great at this point of the season,” said seventh year Head Coach Jill Stephenson. “We’re recovering and hopefully we will be healthy for the [CAC] championships in February.

“Our biggest goals in the regular season are to beat York and Catholic,” said Stephenson. “Those wins would allow for our men to place higher than fourth, which has never been done, and the women to place second.”

The Sea Gulls accomplished half of that goal with victories at York in a Capital Athletic Conference dual meet last Saturday. Despite injuries to seniors Roxanne Hendershot and Sean McGuinn - keeping both out of the lineup - the men took a 106-99 victory and the women won 127-76.

Among the top swimmers for the men thus far are senior Brendan Roddy, and freshmen Ryan Kooy and Doug Vedeloff.  Roddy paced the Sea Gulls at York, placing first in the 200-meter IM (2:08.70) and first in the 100-meter backstroke (59.00).

The women are led by senior Jessie Hobson, junior Caris Richman, and freshman Ashley Letterman.  Richman led the SU women with first place finishes in the 200-meter IM (2:23.00) and 100-meter butterfly (1:03.27) at York.  The 400-meter medley relay (4:10.00) of Julie Wood, Kim Stepowany, Letterman and Richman also placed first.

Several records have fallen this season as well.  Hobson broke the 1,000-meter freestyle record (11:23.02), also broken previously this season by Richman.  Richman also broke the pool record for the 400-meter IM (5:35.64).  Roddy has broken the only men’s record this season. He broke the 400-meter IM mark (5:09.24), eclipsing the record established by former SU swimmer Dan Hutton in 1998.

The next meet for the Sea Gulls will be the Kutztown Invitational on November 30 and December 1.  The Sea Gulls then gear up for the CAC Championship with matches at Goucher, Notre Dame and Catholic in January, before ending the regular season at home against St. Mary’s on January 26.

November 14, 2001

Two Salisbury University field hockey players have been named as 2001 national all-Americans, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).  Their selections mark the 16th straight year that at least one Sea Gull player has been represented on the all-America squad.

Senior midfielder Tara Webster (Deal Island, MD/Washington HS) was selected to the second team and  junior  forward Jill Cressor (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown HS) was named to the third team. Both players are repeat selections, having also earned all-American honors in 2000.

Webster returns to the national second team for the second straight season after finishing with 10 goals, 11 assists and 31 points in 2001. She concluded her career ranked 15th all-time in Sea Gull history with 77 points.

Cressor returns to the national third team after leading the Sea Gulls in scoring with 24 goals and 51 points in 2001. She finished second in the Capital Athletic Conference and fifth in the nation in goals scored. Cressor completed her junior season tied for the all-time lead in Salisbury career goals with 64.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL 2001-02 SEASON OUTLOOK
November 13, 2001

The Sea Gulls will feature a roster full of new faces this season as Head Coach Bridget Benshetler returns just four letterwinners and two starters from last year’s 24-4 squad which set a school record for victories while claiming its second straight Capital Athletic Conference championship.  The Gulls earned their fourth NCAA Tournament bid in 2001 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship Tournament for the second straight year. The Sea Gulls enter the new season with a current streak of seven straight winning seasons.

Headlining the returnees is junior guard Amy Campion, who followed her CAC Rookie of the Year honor in 2000 with second team all-conference accolades last year. Campion led the Gulls in scoring (14.1 ppg), assists (4.1) and steals (3.7) last year while finishing second on the team in rebounds (7.3).  She was the team’s leading scorer in eight games while also recording four double-double performances.

“Campion has worked very hard in the offseason and she’s bigger and stronger than last year,” said Benshetler. “She has stepped up as a leader and this can be a real breakout season for her.”

Senior guard/forward Jaime Kohlenstein is the other returning starter. Kohlenstein averaged a career-best 10.8 ppg last year while finishing second on the team in steals (3.2) and third in assists (2.9).  She is coming off a junior season in which she set career-highs for points, assists and steals. Sophomore center Heather Romich, who averaged 3.4 ppg and 2.8 rpg while seeing action in 24 contests, is the most experienced post player and should improve on her scoring and rebounding totals this season. Junior guard Cate Begley (2.4 ppg) is the only experienced backcourt reserve.

Benshetler is counting on immediate contributions from several of her newcomers to help offset the graduation loss of three starters, including the first (Lisa Neylan) and third (Elisabeth Barfuss) ranked scorers in the program’s history.

Freshmen Pam Kenney and Annemarie Rickes, a pair of 5’11” forwards with multiple skills, may both find spots in the starting lineup as the Gulls begin the new campaign.  Freshman guard Stephanie Szkaradnik and sophomore transfer Jeanette Shuett offer solid perimeter scoring. Two other freshmen, Cyndi Benjamin and Gen Olds, are likely to see backcourt duty as key reserves.

“I’m very optimistic about this team as we begin the season,” said Benshetler. “This team has a lot of talent and a great work ethic. There’s lots of offensive weapons and I think we’ve got very good depth. We will absolutely compete in every game we play. The key to the season will be how quickly we can get it rolling together as a team.”

MEN'S BASKETBALL 2001-02 SEASON OUTLOOK
November 13, 2001

The Sea Gulls begin their second season under Head Coach Steve Holmes with three returning starters and seven lettermen back from a 15-10 squad that finished third during the conference regular season.

Senior guard Doug King, an all-Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) second team player in 2000 and 2001, is the top returning scorer. He averaged 14.7 ppg and was one of two Sea Gulls to start all 25 games last year. King also finished fifth in the CAC in assists (4.4/game) and eighth in steals (1.7/game).  Senior guard Mike Sullivan, who played in all 25 games last year but started just once, will likely move into the starting backcourt alongside King this season. Sullivan averaged 3.2 ppg and was second on the team with 83 assists. He had the third best assist/turnover ratio in the conference last year at +2.02.

“We have great senior leadership from our two backcourt starters,” said Holmes. “Doug is a proven scorer and Mike, as our floor leader, could be one of the keys to our season.”

Sophomore guard Rohn Schutsky is the other returning backcourt letterwinner. Transfer Ryan Freeman and sophomore Bayne Brown are the newcomers in the backcourt.

Senior forward Jason Campion is the top frontcourt returnee. Campion averaged 9.8 ppg and 5.3 rebounds while seeing action in all 25 games, with 13 starts. He will be joined in the frontcourt by senior Lou Clark, who may miss the beginning of the season while recovering from an offseason hand injury. Seniors Matt Briggs (1.3 ppg, 1.2 rpg) and Babatunde Bandele (2.6 ppg, 1.8 rpg), along with junior Greg Cooper (3.1 ppg, 1.9 rpg), provide experience and depth and could see action as frontcourt starters or key reserves.

“Campion is very versatile in that he can shoot the three and also score with his back to the basket,” said Holmes. “We also think we’ll get good minutes from our other veterans, either as starters or off the bench.”

Three other newcomers round out this year’s 13-man roster. Junior transfer Jim Todd, along with freshmen Clement Sorgho and Dameon Gibbs, add further frontcourt depth and will challenge for immediate playing time.

“I think we have a nice mix of veterans and newcomers,” said Holmes. “The veterans provide great leadership, which we’ll need throughout the season in order to handle adversity. The new players have already provided some excitement in the early going. I’m pleased that everybody has been working very hard and all the guys are very willing to learn. We have an enthusiastic squad.”

The Sea Gulls led the conference in field goal percentage last year at 43.9%, and were second in the league in 3-point field goal accuracy at 35.7%. Salisbury also begins the season with an NCAA Division III record of 398 consecutive games with at least one three-point field goal made, a streak that dates back to the 1986-87 season.

Salisbury is making its 17th trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last 18 years. The Gulls qualified for the NCAA Championship Tournament nine straight times from 1984-92 and have returned to the field for eight straight years after missing out in 1993.  The Sea Gulls won the national championship with a 21-0 record in 1986, and have advanced to the national semifinals on four other occasions: 1987, 1988, 1992 and 2000. Last year, Salisbury defeated William Paterson and Lebanon Valley to win the regional, then hosted the final four and finished third in the nation. SU is 21-16 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, including 12-4 in the opening round. Salisbury’s 17 tournament appearances is tied for second highest in NCAA Division III history.

Gulls Capture Seventh Straight CAC Crown in 2001
For the seventh straight year, Salisbury enters the NCAA Tournament as champion of the Capital Athletic Conference. While the CAC does not receive an automatic berth into the tournament, both Salisbury and Mary Washington received at-large invitations into this year’s championship field. The Gulls defeated Mary Washington 1-0 in overtime in last Saturday’s title match. That victory avenged an earlier loss to MWC that ended Salisbury’s 45-match conference winning streak. Freshman Melissa Webster tallied the game-winner in the CAC final, with an assist to senior sister Tara Webster. The Gulls, ranked #1 in the nation for five weeks during the 2001 season, enter the NCAA Tournament ranked second in the nation in the final NFHCA poll, released on October 30. SU is riding a four-game winning streak and has won seven of its last eight contests. Junior Jill Cressor is the team’s leading scorer with 24 goals and 51 total points. Seniors Marie Brewington (17g-8a) and Kristen Seaton (11g-8a) are second and third, respectively, in scoring.  SU averages 4.5 goals per game and has outscored opponents 81-13 this season. Senior goalie Joanna Fenske (0.71 GAA) and the defense have posted 11 shutouts.

NCAA Tournament Notes

Winners of the four regionals advance to the semifinals and finals on November 10 and 11, hosted by Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts.  Salisbury defeated Wesley 4-0 earlier this year and lost 2-1 at New Jersey. The Gulls are 2-1 all-time against Lynchburg, but have not faced the Hornets since a 5-4 victory in 1993.

SWIMMERS BEGIN 2001-02 CAMPAIGN ON SATURDAY
October 18, 2001

Gulls Travel to Arlington, VA for Marymount Relays

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury University men’s and women’s swim teams open the 2001-02 varsity season this Saturday at the Marymount Relays in Arlington, VA. The SU women are coming off their most successful season ever as they finished with a 7-2 dual meet record in 2001 and a second place showing in the season-ending Capital Athletic Conference Championship Meet. The men’s team finished 3-4 overall last year and was fifth in the CAC Championship. The two teams combined for 11 new school records and registered nine all-conference performances last year.

“This week’s event is an all-relay meet that we enter with a couple of specific goals,” said Head Coach Jill Stephenson, beginning her seventh season at Salisbury.  “We want to definitely register some wins, and we want to give some of our freshmen and other newcomers a chance to compete in a collegiate event prior to the start of our dual meet schedule.”

Saturday’s event ends a four-week preseason period. “Both teams have worked very hard throughout our preseason practices,” said Stephenson.  “We are ready to get started.”

Top returnees for the Sea Gull women include seniors Julie Wood (backstroke), Jessie Hobson (distance freestyle), and Roxanne Hendershot (distance freestyle), as well as junior Caris Richmond (IM, butterfly).  Newcomers to watch include freshmen Lindsay Conover (butterfly, IM), Amanda Lanz (freestyle) and Ashley Letterman (breaststroke).

“I think we have a lot more depth on the women’s team this year,” said Stephenson. “We certainly hope to match last year’s results. The difference is that this year we may have fewer first place finishes in events, but more second, third and fourth place showings.”

Senior Brendan Roddy, last year’s CAC Men’s Swimmer of the Year and three-time conference champion in the 1650 freestyle, is the top returnee among the Sea Gull men. Roddy will once again be one of the team’s top candidates to meet national qualifying standards.

Other top returnees include juniors Bobby Klaslo (distance freestyle) and Bryan Matonak (sprint freestyle), and sophomore Ben Davis (distance freestyle).  Newcomers to watch are freshmen Adam Podolak (freestyle, IM), Doug Vedeloff (sprint freestyle, IM) and Ryan Kooy (breaststroke).

“The men’s team has been very intense throughout the preseason and is focused on breaking some of the team records this year,” said Stephenson. “I think the team should be much improved.”

The Sea Gulls follow this week’s season-opening event with their first dual meet of the year on October 27 against defending CAC men’s and women’s champion Mary Washington. That meet begins at 1 p.m. in Fredericksburg, VA.  The women swim their home opener on November 3 against Gallaudet, while the men’s squad makes its home debut on November 6 against Rowan.

VOLLEYBALL LOSES 3-2 IN FIRST PLACE SHOWDOWN
October 10, 2001

Gallaudet hosted Salisbury in a match that had major implications on the Capital Athletic Conference standings. At 3-0, Gallaudet led Salisbury (3-1) and Catholic (2-1) in the standings, but a loss would have forged a three-way tie with each school owning a 1-1 record against the other two.

Gallaudet took a 30-26, 24-30, 32-30, 29-31, 15-11 victory on Wednesday to remain unbeaten in the conference. The Bison started off quick, grabbing a 5-1 lead in the first set. They eventually stretched the advantage to 28-19 before fighting to hold on for a 30-26 win. The second game was a reversal of the first. Salisbury went ahead 6-1 and after Gallaudet closed to 11-10, the Sea Gulls pulled away to take the 30-24 victory.

The third set was much more of a back-and-forth affair. The Sea Gulls jumped ahead 6-2 but Gallaudet rallied, finally taking the lead on a four-point run that put it ahead 25-23. The teams tied at 25-25, 29-29 and 30-30 before the Bison took the game, 32-30.

The fourth game saw neither team gain more than a three-point advantage. There were 15 ties in the set but the Bison looked in control when they broke a 26-26 ties to go ahead 29-26. The Sea Gulls responded with a run of their own to take the set 31-29.

The fifth set seemed to be over before it started. Gallaudet jumped ahead 4-0 as freshman Jovin Dinkel had three straight kills. The Bison led by an 11-4 score when Salisbury finally woke. Despite closing to within two at 12-10, Salisbury could not complete the comeback. Gallaudet won three of the next four points for a 15-11 victory. The final point came when Dinkel and senior Laurie Anderson blocked a Salisbury kill attempt to give the Bison the win.

Last Year vs. Greensboro
Led by a career-high of 255 yards rushing by RB Tony Ellis, Salisbury finished with 477 yards rushing in last year’s victory.  For just the third time in team history and for the first time since 1976, the Sea Gulls finished with three players with 100 yards or better on the ground. QB Mac Mollet ran for 108 yards and one touchdown and FB Reggie Boyce registered 106 yards and three touchdowns.  Salisbury’s 52-point total was its highest since a 52-20 victory over the District of Columbia (UDC) in 1988.

Last Week: Gulls Lose Home Opener to Methodist
Methodist scored all its points in the second half to rally from a 21-0 deficit and defeat the Sea Gulls 28-27 in a non-conference game before 1,056 in Salisbury. The Monarchs scored the tying touchdown with 1:47 remaining, and successfully converted the extra-point kick for the victory. Salisbury built a 14-0 first quarter lead as Mac Mollet (9 of 16, 83 yards) hit WR Pat Dargan with a 19-yard TD pass and freshman RB Dave Gonano scored on a four-yard run.  The Sea Gulls increased the lead to 21-0 when Mollet scampered 14 yards for a score with 6:53 remaining in the third quarter. Tony Ellis (74 yards) pushed the Sea Gull lead to 27-14 with a 22-yard TD run at 9:35 of the fourth quarter. The blocked extra-point kick following that touchdown would prove to be the difference in the final score.

Statistically Speaking
Despite last week’s loss, the Sea Gulls outgained Methodist 296 to 256 in total yards. SU also finished with a slight advantage in first downs, 17-15, but lost the turnover battle 2-0. Individually, Ellis leads the ground attack with 93 ypg rushing, with FB Sean Montpetit adding 91.7 ypg. Mollet is completing 56.4% of his passes (31 of 55), with two touchdowns and one interception. He is also the team’s leading scorer with three rushing TDs on the year.  Junior DB Foster Epps and junior LB Chris Varlotta pace the defense with 18 tackles each through three contests. Varlotta registered a team-high 12 stops in last week’s game.
