SALISBURY PLACES 15TH IN FINAL SEARS CUP STANDINGS Sea
Gulls Earn Their Highest Ranking Ever; Finish in Top Four Percent ORLANDO, FL - Salisbury
State University earned its highest finish ever in the six-year history of the
Sears Directors Cup rankings for intercollegiate athletics, released Tuesday.
Salisbury finished 15th among the 395 NCAA Division III schools with
435 points earned during the 2000-01 academic year. Schools accumulate points
based on their success in post-season play for all sports. The award is presented
annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)
to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country.
The Sea Gulls were the highest ranking member of the Capital Athletic
Conference as well as the highest ranking school in Maryland. Salisbury, which placed
18th in the final standings last year, improved by 30 points on last year’s 405
point total. The Sea Gulls had 12
of their 19 sports represented in NCAA Tournaments and Championships during the
2000-01 year, including five teams in the recently completed spring season. Among this year’s
highlights: the field hockey team finished third in the nation; the baseball
team placed fourth at the World Series; the women’s soccer, women’s
lacrosse and men’s lacrosse teams all advanced to the national quarterfinals;
and the softball team advanced to the regional finals. Other sports that
qualified teams or individuals for the NCAA postseason included volleyball,
men's soccer, women’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s swimming, and
women’s tennis. Of the six years that the
award has been presented, Salisbury has finished no lower than 51st among the nearly 400 schools that comprise the
NCAA's Division III ranks. Previous Sea
Gull finishes were: 51st (1996); 25th (1997); 45th (1998); 34th (1999); and
18th (2000). Williams (MA) College
repeats as the overall NCAA Division III winner in 2001, claiming its fifth
Sears Directors' Cup in the last six years with 897 total points. Middlebury
(VT) finished second (728), The College of New Jersey placed third (713), Emory
(GA) was fourth (633) and Ithaca (NY) was fifth (584). Each year, the Sears
Directors' Cup program, presented in partnership by Sears and NACDA, awards
Waterford Crystal trophies to the top athletics programs in NCAA Division I,
II, III and NAIA. The Sears Directors' Cup program is the only all-sports
competition that recognizes the institution in each of the four categories with
the best overall athletics program. Complete
final rankings on all of the institutions are available on NACDA's home page at

GULLS FINISH FOURTH IN FINAL BASEBALL POLL SALISBURY, MD – Coming off the first World Series appearance in school history, the Salisbury State University baseball team is ranked fourth in the final American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball poll of the 2001 season, released today. The ranking is the highest ever for the Sea Gull baseball program. Salisbury, which finished 33-13 overall, is also ranked number one in the final South Region poll of the season. Salisbury advanced to the Division III World Series by finishing 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament’s South Regional. SSU then finished 2-2 in the double-elimination World Series and placed fourth among the eight teams that advanced to the championship in Appleton, WI. After opening play in the World Series with a 1-0 loss to Marietta, the Sea Gulls rebounded with back-to-back victories over Chapman (2-0) and Cortland State (6-4). The Gulls were eliminated by another 1-0 loss, against Montclair State. Salisbury’s 33 victories tied its single-season record. Individually, junior 1B Kevin Davis paced the Gulls with a .400 batting average in the World Series, including one home run and four RBI. Junior 2B Robbie Robeson hit .333 and led the defense with a team-high 15 assists. The SSU pitching staff hurled four complete games in the World Series while finishing with a 1.06 ERA. Senior Chad Swiderski registered a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts in the win over Chapman. Sophomore Star Kriger recorded the other victory with a complete-game outing against Cortland State. The Sea Gulls finished with seven complete-game efforts in eight postseason games. Salisbury expects to return seven of eight position players next season, including conference player of the year Jason Ewing. The junior outfielder led the Gulls with a .392 average this season, including team-highs with 10 HRs and 43 RBI. In other baseball news, senior RHP Bobby Hamel has
been named to the national Verizon Academic All-America baseball team. Hamel, a
four-year starter for the Sea Gulls, was named to the College Division third
team and was one of just six pitchers to earn academic all-America honors. The
College Division honors all players from NCAA Division II and III programs.
Hamel, a physical education major, graduated with honors last week. He finished
with a 4-1 record this season and concluded his career with a 15-4 mark.
JIM NESTOR NAMED AS NEWEST SEA GULL HEAD COACH Salisbury, MD – Jim Nestor has been named the
new head coach for women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse at Salisbury State
University. The announcement was made today by Dr. Michael Vienna,
director of athletics. Nestor,
a 1990 graduate of the University, returns to his alma mater after serving as
the head coach for women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer at Division II
Gannon University in Erie, PA since 1995.
He has coached on the collegiate level for 10 years, including Frostburg
(Md) State (1991-92), Colby-Sawyer (NH) (1992-94) and Lafayette (Pa) (1994).
“Jim
is a very talented coach with a proven track record of success,” said Vienna.
“We believe he’ll be able to continue the strong tradition in both of these
sports at Salisbury State. We’re glad that he’s agreed to return to his
alma mater.” Nestor
compiled a 73-20-1 record in six seasons with the Gannon women’s lacrosse
program. The Lady Knight’s concluded the 2001 season last week with a 17-15
loss in the NCAA Division II Tournament’s national semifinals to finish with
a 14-4 record. Nestor guided the
team to a winning season every year during the program’s six-year history.
Gannon won three straight ECAC Championships from 1998-2000, and was named the
co-national champion by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches
Association (IWLCA) following the 2000 season. Nestor
posted a 49-44 record in five seasons as the head coach of the women’s soccer
program. He guided the team to four consecutive winning seasons, the only
winning seasons in the program’s history. The Lady Knights set the
school-record with 12 wins in both the 1998 and 1999 seasons. Nestor stepped
down as head coach following the 1999 season, but remained as an assistant with
the program in 2000. Nestor
was named the IWLCA’s Division II Coach of the Year in 1996, and was
recognized as the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year in 2000 by College
LacrosseUSA.com. Gannon had 21
players recognized as all-Americans during Nestor’s tenure with the program. Originally
from Laurel, MD, Nestor received his bachelor’s degree in physical education
from SSU in 1990. He was a four-year lettermen on the Sea Gull lacrosse and
wrestling teams during his collegiate career.
Nestor earned his master’s degree in health and physical education at
Frostburg State in 1992. His wife,
Linda, is also a Salisbury State graduate. Nestor
inherits two highly successful programs at Salisbury State. The women’s
soccer team won the Capital Athletic Conference championship and advanced to
the NCAA Tournament’s final eight in 2000. He replaces Jim Berkman, who
stepped down after seven seasons with a 102-28-5 record, including 20-1-2
in 2000. The women’s lacrosse
team, coached by Dawn Chamberlin, has made three straight trips to the NCAA
Tournament and won consecutive CAC titles. Chamberlin registered a 119-72
career mark.

WOMEN'S TENNIS RECEIVES FIRST-EVER NCAA TOURNAMENT BID “We’re
definitely excited to have been selected and to be making our first appearance
in the championship,” said second-year Head Coach Randy Halfpap. “We
hope this will be the first of many NCAA appearances in the future. I think our
selection was a result of the team’s hard work this year.” The
Sea Gulls finished with a 7-4 regular season record and placed second to Mary
Washington in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. All four losses this
year were against teams also selected to the 26-team NCAA championship field. “Although
we lost some key matches against tough opponents, I think the strength of our
overall schedule helped us in the selection process,” said Halfpap. “Two of
the losses, to Methodist and Mary Washington, were by narrow 5-4 scores.” Salisbury’s lineup features just one senior among the top six players. Junior
Bridget Dellar (Huntingtown, MD) plays in the number one singles flight.
The rest of the singles lineup features sophomore Jody Cogar (Lake Placid,
NY) at the two position; freshman Samantha Coldren (North East, MD)
at three; freshman Cassie Meyer (New Market, MD) at four; senior Courtney
Martin (Ellicott City, MD) at five and sophomore Amy Campion (Bowie, MD
at six. Dellar
and Meyer combine on the number one doubles team. Coldren and Cogar form the
number two doubles unit, with Martin and sophomore Heather Tyng (Columbia,
MD) together on the number three doubles team. Martin
finished as the conference’s number five singles champion while Campion
captured the number six singles title. Martin and Tyng were also CAC champions
at number three doubles. Dellar, Cogar, Coldren and Meyer all finished as
conference runnerups in their singles flights. “I
knew at the start of the season that we had the potential to go to the NCAA
Tournament this year,” said Halfpap. “Obviously, we’re not as experienced
in postseason play as the teams we’ll see in the regionals, but I know we can
compete with those teams.” Two
South Atlantic teams will advance to next week’s eight-team national finals
in San Antonio, Texas.

VARSITY CLUB CREATES MEN'S LACROSSE ENDOWMENT FUND “We
are very appreciative of our initial contributors and are fortunate to have
such individuals willing to assist our athletics program with some of our
financial challenges,” said Dr. Michael Vienna, director of
athletics. “The establishment of this endowment will give our men's lacrosse
program an additional revenue source as well as provide the program with an
initial financial base which we hope to improve upon.” Due
to the generosity of several contributors, including community business leaders
Stu Barr, Bill Kenton and John Hall, as well as former Sea Gull all-American
Dod Poe, the fund has already reached the $15,000
plateau. The Varsity Club
continues to accept contributions toward the fund’s $30,000 goal. “It’s
extremely exciting to know that people care enough about lacrosse and Salisbury
State University to help make this happen,” said Head Coach Jim Berkman.
“This endowment will have everlasting benefits and will allow us to acquire
and provide the extra things that make a program special. I think it also
reflects an appreciation from the community for the efforts that our players
have put forth over the years with clinics for area kids and involvement with
youth lacrosse in the community.” The
Sea Gulls claimed their sixth straight Capital Athletic Conference championship
last month and will be making their 13th consecutive appearance in
the NCAA Championship Tournament in 2001.
SSU has won three NCAA Division III national championships (1994, 1995,
1999) and finished as the winningest team during the 1990s with a 142-14
record. The
Gulls, 14-1 this year and ranked #4 in the nation, conclude the 2001 regular
season on Saturday against Washington College in Chestertown, MD.
Pairings for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Sunday. Further
information about contributing to the lacrosse endowment fund is available by
contacting Varsity Club Coordinator Ralph Murray at 410-677-5069.
BRANNAN, MEZZADRA NAMED SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD WINNERS Brannan, from Lutherville, MD/Loyola HS, is a

The Sea Gulls have been ranked either first, second or third at the time
of their OWU game in each of those seasons. The Series
-- The teams are meeting for the 21st time, with Salisbury holding a 15-5
advantage in the series. Last Year
-- Salisbury prevailed 11-8 at home as all-America midfielders Tim Parks and
Chris Turner scored three goals apiece. The game was tied four times, including
5-5 at halftime and 7-7 late in the third quarter. Streaks
-- Salisbury State brings a current five-game winning streak into Saturday’s
game. All five victories have come against Capital Athletic Conference
opponents. SSU has won two
straight over Ohio Wesleyan, while the Bishops had won two straight in the
series (1997, 1998) prior to SSU's victory in 1999. Salisbury won five
straight over OWU between 1991 and 1996. Ohio
Wesleyan's 13-10 win in 1997 ended Salisbury's
NCAA record 65-game regular season winning streak. SSU This Year
-- The Sea Gulls have outscored their first five opponents 85-16 while
extending their all-time conference winning streak to 35 straight. The defense
has been dominating thus far, with first half shutouts in three of the five
games. The Gulls have outshot their five opponents by a combined 233-72 total.
Junior midfielder Josh Bergey leads the team in assists (15) and points
(19). Junior transfer Steve Brianas is the top goal scorer (15) and
second in points (16). Freshman Andy Arnold has 13 goals. Goalie Pat
Tewes has started all five games and has a .684 save percentage. SSU Against the Best
-- The Gulls are 13-3 during the past two seasons against teams ranked in the
top 10. OWU Preview
-- The Battling Bishops are playing their season-opener on Saturday.
Second-year Head Coach Sean Ryan has six starters back from last year’s 14-4
squad which was co-champion of the North Coast Athletic Conference and advanced
to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Five of the top eight scorers
also return from a team that set a new OWU scoring record with 314 goals last
year. Ohio Wesleyan will follow its Salisbury contest with games against
Greensboro and Hampden-Sydney during its three-game spring trip. What's
Ahead -- Saturday's game is the first of five straight for the Sea Gulls against ranked opponents.
Salisbury hosts #6 Denison on Wednesday, then faces #15 Williams and #11
Bowdoin in Florida before returning north to host #4 Gettysburg on March 31.
MITCHELL SWIMS AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP MEET THIS WEEK “This
is very exciting for Rebecca to be invited as a senior,” said SSU Head Coach Jill
Stephenson. “Swimming in the national championship meet is a great
experience and proves that all of Rebecca’s hard work for four years has paid
off.” Mitchell
qualified for the NCAA Championship with a school-record time of 1:55.75 in the
200-freestyle during last month’s CAC Championship Meet.
Mitchell’s time was the 22nd fastest nationally in the
event this year. Mitchell did not
meet the specific qualifying times in the 100 and 500 freestyles, but has the
option of swimming in those events by virtue of qualifying in the 200-free.
Mitchell owns the SSU record for the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:11.15, set
last year. Mitchell
begins competition on Thursday in the 500-freestyle. The 200-freestyle follows
on Friday, with the 100-freestyle event on Saturday. In each event, the preliminary heats are in the morning, with
the finals scheduled in the evening. The
top eight finishers in each event earn all-America status, with finishers 9-16
earning honorable mention AA honors. “The
toughest thing for Rebecca during the past few weeks has been training on her
own,” said Stephenson. “Her results at the championship meet may depend on
the level of competition in her preliminary heats.” The
NCAA Championship Meet will cap an outstanding senior campaign for Mitchell,
who was named the CAC’s Swimmer of the Year after winning the conference
title in both the 200 and 500 freestyles.
She also earned a third CAC title by swimming on Salisbury’s first
place 200-medley relay team. | ||
