The Sea Gulls return to action following a week off and play the first of three straight Atlantic Central Football Conference games as Wesley visits Sea Gull Stadium on Homecoming Day.

The Series
Wesley leads the all-time series 6-4, with four straight wins. SSU’s last victory came in 1995, a 24-21 win in Dover.

Gulls on Homecoming
Salisbury State is playing its 29th Homecoming Day football game, with a 13-15 record overall in those contests.  The Gulls will try to snap a three-year losing streak in Homecoming Games. The Sea Gull and Wolverines have met once before on Homecoming, a 49-47 Wesley win in 1994 in one of the most memorable games at Sea Gull Stadium. That game set a new SSU record, since broken, for combined points in a game.

Last Time Out
Salisbury returns to action for the first time since October 14, when the College of New Jersey ended SSU’s three-game winning streak with a 20-13 victory.  RB Tony Ellis carried the offense in that game, finishing with 166 yards rushing and scoring both Salisbury touchdowns. Ellis scored on runs of 81 and 80 yards.
Wesley won its fifth straight last week with a 48-6 victory at home over Methodist. RB Jabar Truitt led the Wolverines with 120 yards rushing and three touchdowns. QB Jason Visconti added 174 yards passing and one touchdown.

Last Year vs. Wesley
The Wolverines built a 14-7 halftime lead and held on for the win through a scoreless second half in Dover. Truitt scored on a seven-yard TD run and Gary Morgan had an 84-yard kickoff return touchdown for Wesley. Bryan Driskell completed a 21-yard TD pass to Thomas Browne to account for SSU’s score. Myron Dent paced the SSU ground attack with 83 yards, while Driskell finished with a career-high 228 yards passing.

THREE SSU TEAMS RANKED IN NATIONAL TOP 15
Oct. 10, 2000

Men’s, Women’s Soccer & Field Hockey Among Division III Elite

SALISBURY, MD – While the opening week of October finds cooler temperatures than usual on the Eastern Shore, the Sea Gull athletic teams continue to blaze red hot.

Three Salisbury State squads are ranked in the nation’s top 15 for their sports this week, highlighting the exceptional performances of each of these teams through five weeks of competition.

The men’s soccer team, unranked since being tabbed 20th in the preseason, jumped into the national soccer coaches (NSCAA) weekly top 25 poll at number 11 this week. The Sea Gulls, 10-1 overall, are riding a school-record-tying eight game winning streak.  SSU is coming off a 4-2 win Saturday over previously #6 Johns Hopkins. Salisbury, also ranked #2 in the South Region, puts its 3-0 conference record to the test Wednesday at Goucher.

The women’s soccer team, 12-0-2 overall and sporting the nation’s longest unbeaten streak at 14 games, moved up one spot in this week’s national poll to #15.  The Sea Gulls are coming off a 3-0 week, topped by a 2-1 win over Rowan on Sunday.  Salisbury’s two goals in that contest set a new season record for goals with 66 through 14 games.

Salisbury State is one of just four schools in the nation to have both of its soccer teams ranked in the national top 15 this week, and the only school to also have its field hockey team ranked in the national top ten this week.

The field hockey team climbed three spots into a tie for 8th in this week’s STX/NFHCA poll.  The Sea Gulls, 9-2 overall, are riding a five-game winning streak heading into Wednesday’s conference match at St. Mary’s. Salisbury, the five-time defending conference champion, will be trying to capture its 41st straight CAC win in that contest. Sophomore Jill Cressor, who tallied five goals in three matches last week, has raised her conference-leading goal total to 14 on the season.

In other sports happenings at Salisbury State this week…

Fullback Reggie Boyce is this week’s Atlantic Central Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his career-high 141 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a school-record 99-yard run, in Saturday’s 19-7 over Chowan. Boyce’s selection marks the third straight week that a Salisbury player has won the ACFC’s weekly offensive honor and the fourth time this season.  The Sea Gulls (4-2 overall, 2-1 ACFC) will try to register their first four-game win streak since 1995 when they host The College of New Jersey on Saturday.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams both placed third overall in the Maryland State Championship Meet last week and first among all non-Division I teams.  Jeremy Beall (11th) and Larry O’Hara (15th) earned all-state honors for the men by virtue of their top-15 individual finishes.  Suzy McCulloch (5th) and Scottie Morris (13th) earned all-state honors on the women’s side.

The volleyball team has a new career kills leader. Senior outside hitter Donna Hudson became SSU's all-time leader in kills, passing Courtney Moore (1993-96) into first place on the career list. Hudson registered 27 kills in matches against Western Maryland and St. Mary’s last Saturday, raising her school-record total to 1,155. SSU, 10-11 overall (2-2 CAC), continues conference play with a visit to Mary Washington on Wednesday.

FOOTBALL TEAM HOPES TO WIN THIRD STRAIGHT
Oct. 3, 2000

Chowan (1-3, 0-3 ACFC) at Salisbury State (3-2, 1-1 ACFC)
Saturday, October 7, 2000 – 1 p.m. – Sea Gull Stadium
Radio: WICO AM 1320

Salisbury State, coming off its first road win of the season and back-to-back 52-point outings, will try to claim its third straight win when it hosts Chowan on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Series Record
Salisbury leads 5-1, including a 31-27 win at Chowan last year.  SSU won the first four meetings between the teams from 1994-97 before the Braves captured their first win in 1998.  The scores:

1994        SSU 35, CC 2
1995        SSU 21, CC 6
1996        SSU 23, CC 0
1997        SSU 28, CC 17
1998        CC 26, SSU 10
1999        SSU 31, CC 27

Last Year’s Game
QB Bryan Driskell found WR Thomas Browne in the back of the end zone from 31 yards out with 57 seconds left in the game as Salisbury rallied with 14 fourth quarter points for the win in Murfreesboro, NC. The game-winning drive covered 81 yards in 10 plays. RB Myron Dent set an ACFC record with a career-high 245 yards rushing and scored on touchdown runs of four and 20 yards.

Last Week: Gulls Swat Hornets
Salisbury used an overpowering ground game and hit the 50-point mark for the second straight week in a 52-6 non-conference win at Shenandoah.  RB Tony Ellis registered his fourth straight 100-yard rushing game and second straight 200-yard performance, finishing with 241 yards and three touchdowns. FB Reggie Boyce added 122 yards to record his third straight 100-yard outing as well. Salisbury also scored on an 80-yard kickoff return by Richard Mann and a 29-yard interception return by Randy Curtin.

Historical Perspective
A win this week will provide the Sea Gulls with their first three-game winning streak since 1998. SSU won its final game of the 1997 season at William Paterson and its first two games of the 1998 season against Ursinus and Alfred during that streak.  SSU’s 104 points scored in the last two games is its highest two-week output since scoring 108 points in back-to-back games in 1986 (45 vs. Ramapo; 63 vs. Wesley). The Sea Gulls have not scored 50 points in consecutive games since 1973, and have not had two games over 50 points in one season since 1988.

Ellis Claims ACFC Honors Again
Sophomore RB Tony Ellis is this week’s ACFC Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.  With 241 yards last week, Ellis has increased his conference-leading average to 165.2 ypg.  His 826-yard total through five games is more than the SSU end-of-year leader has had in 17 of 28 previous seasons.

Brannan, Attia Lead Defense
The Salisbury defense nearly recorded its first shutout in four seasons last week, allowing only a fourth quarter touchdown following a special teams turnover deep in its own territory.  For the fourth straight game, the Gulls limited their opponent to less than 100 yards rushing. SSU is ranked second in the ACFC in rushing defense, allowing just 75.2 ypg. LB Pat Brannan is the conference leader in tackles with 10.8/game, while DE Khalid Attia leads the league in sacks with five.

More Rankings
Salisbury’s 32.8 scoring average ranks second in the conference, while its 292 yards rushing average leads the league.  Ellis and Boyce (97.6 ypg) rank first and second in both individual rushing and scoring (54 and 50 points, respectively), while Ellis also leads the league in all-purpose yards with 190/game.  Senior Seth Haskins is the ACFC’s top punt returner with a 16.2 avg. Senior SS Corey Brown is tied for the conference lead with three interceptions. FS Du’Juan Wilson is tied for third with two interceptions.

Scouting the Braves
Chowan is coming off a 20-13 loss at home to Frostburg last week, a game that the Braves led 13-10 heading into the fourth quarter. Timmy Carter (107) and Jawarren Coles (106) both rushed for over 100 yards and one touchdown each in the loss. QB Chris Stodgill is averaging 120 yds/game through the air, with four touchdown passes.  Brian Harvell is the top receiver with nine catches and averages 17.7 ypr.  LB Terrance Saxby leads the defense with 32 tackles and four sacks.

Sea Gull Nibbles
Salisbury converted a season-best seven of 13 third-down attempts last week and has raised its season conversion rate to 34%…DE Tom McCarthy finished with a career-high eight tackles, including three for loss, in last week’s game and was a candidate for ACFC defensive player of the week honors…Richard Mann’s 80-yard kickoff return TD was SSU’s first since Tony Hill in 1998… Salisbury has eight 100-plus rushing performances through five games…The Gulls have the best turnover margin in the league at +1.2/game…SSU has 17 takeaways and 11 turnovers…FB Matt Rhoades scored his first career touchdown on a nine-yard run in the fourth quarter of last week’s game…Junior Randy Curtin’s interception and touchdown were both the first of his career…Paul Jacko is 2-2 in field goals this season, including a 29-yarder last week…Saturday’s game is the first of three straight at home for Salisbury…The Gulls host the College of New Jersey on October 14 and Wesley on October 28.

SEA GULLS HOST TIDEWATER CROSS COUNTRY CLASSIC THIS WEEK
Sept. 28, 2000

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury men’s and women’s cross country teams host seven teams in this year’s annual Tidewater Fall Classic, scheduled for this Saturday, September 30.  The race will be held at Winter Place Park in Salisbury and the participants are: East Stroudsburg, Kean, Adelphi, Rowan, Bowie State, Wesley and Montgomery

The 5K women’s race begins at 11 a.m., followed by the 8K men’s race at noon.  The awards and trophy presentation for both divisions is scheduled for 1 p.m.

“This is a good meet and a fast course,” said second year SSU Head Coach Jim Jones.  “Our two biggest threats this year are Rowan and East Stroudsburg.  Last year East Stroudsburg won both the men’s and women’s races, but this is a rebuilding year for them. It should be a good match-up.

“Our men’s team is running very well,” said Jones.  “They are unselfish and working well as a team.  Our women will be at their full potential this week after recovering from a few injuries at the beginning of the season.  Both teams should be running at 100 percent.

Among the top runners for the women is junior Suzy McCulloch.  She is returning for a second week after coming off from an early season injury that sidelined her for SSU’s first two events.  She placed 16th in her debut in last week’s NYU Invitational with a time of 19:41 and is the defending Tidewater Champion. Also returning for a second week because of an early season injury is sophomore Scottie Morris, who placed 85th in the NYU Invitational with a time of 21:03.  Jones expects both women to improve on their times this week

Among the top runners for the men is sophomore Jeremy Beall.  He placed 18th in the Sea Gull Opener, 20th at Lebanon Valley, and 49th in last week’s NYU Invitational with a time of 27:42.  Senior Larry O’Hara placed 93rd with a time of 28:33 at NYU and freshman Kyle Reagan placed 103rd with a time of 28:41.

Saturday’s event is the second of four home meets for Salisbury this season at Winter Place Park, and part of the heaviest home schedule in recent years. The Sea Gulls host the Maryland State Championship on the same course next week, as well as the conference championship on November 4.

VOLLEYBALL HOSTS ANNUAL SSU INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND
Sept. 19, 2000

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury State women’s volleyball team will host four teams on Friday and Saturday in the annual Sea Gull Invitational Tournament.  SSU welcomes Catholic University, Richard Stockton College, Frostburg State University, and Washington College.  All matches will be played at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.  The complete weekend schedule:

Court 1 Court 2
Friday 3 p.m. Catholic v. Washington
5 p.m. Frostburg v. Salisbury Catholic v. Stockton
7 p.m. Salisbury v. Washington Frostburg v. Stockton
Saturday  9 a.m. Stockton v. Salisbury
10:45 Frostburg v. Catholic Stockton v. Washington
 1:15  Catholic v. Salisbury Frostburg v. Washington

The tournament champion will be the team with the best win-loss record in the round-robin format. Tie-breaking criteria will be the result of head-to-head matches and win-loss percentage in all games played.  Admission is free on both days.

The Sea Gulls bring a 4-5 overall record into the tournament, including a 3-0 win over St. Mary’s in their home opener on Wednesday. The Sea Gulls are hoping for a strong showing to help jump start a slow season start.

“We definitely have a lot talent this year, we just seem to be struggling as a team,” said Head Coach Margie Knight, now in her 4th season at SSU.  “Our hitting is inconsistent, which is one of our main frustrations.  We need to put the ball down.  At times our serving is good, which has a positive effect on our game.  Our strongest areas are our setting and digs.”

“This weekend’s tournament will be a real challenge for us,” said Knight.  “Catholic is ranked 3rd in the Mid-Atlantic Region and returns every player from last year.  Frostburg and Stockton are also very strong teams.  Washington has potential but it is a rebuilding year for them.  We need to come out strong and ready to play.”

Among the key players for Salisbury is senior setter Katie Korreck, who finished with 31 assists, eight kills and 13 digs in Wednesday’s victory over St. Mary’s. Junior Kara Kowalski, SSU’s all-time digs leader, added 18 more to her career total of 1,293 on Wednesday, while also recording 14 kills. Senior Donna Hudson, who also registered 14 kills against St. Mary’s, leads the team with 93 kills for the year.

This weekend’s tournament is the second of  five regular season tournaments for the Sea Gulls this season. Salisbury plays in Washington College’s Invitational next week, and is also scheduled to compete in the Western Maryland Invitational and Elizabethtown College Classic next month.

SALISBURY HOSTS GREENSBORO ON YOUTH DAY
Sept. 21, 2000

Greensboro (1-1, 1-1 ACFC) at Salisbury State (1-2, 0-1 ACFC)
Saturday, September 23, 2000
Sea Gull Stadium – Salisbury, MD

A number of area youth groups will also be in attendance, as well as the pep band from Crisfield High School, under the direction of SSU alum Jack Burton.

Last Week: SSU Loses ACFC Opener
Tony Ellis and Reggie Boyce each rushed for over 100 yards, but penalties and turnovers hurt the Sea Gulls in a 17-14 loss at Methodist last Saturday.  Trailing by seven, Salisbury marched 79 yards in 10 plays to tie the game on an 11-yard touchdown run by Boyce with 7:22 left to play. But Methodist answered with a game-winning drive of its own, capped by a 35-yard field goal with 54 seconds remaining in the game.  Salisbury finished the game with a season-high 223 yards rushing as a team, including an average of 5.2 yards/attempt.

The Last Time
Did you know that the last time the Sea Gulls finished with two 100-yard rushers in one game was November 11, 1995.  Daron Wimbush had 114 yards and Mac James added 105 as Salisbury defeated Sue Bennett 49-15 at Sea Gull Stadium that afternoon.

Defense Remains Stingy Against the Run
For the second straight week, the Salisbury defense neutralized the opponent’s rushing attack. After limiting William Paterson to –5 net yards rushing two weeks ago, the Sea Gulls allowed Methodist just 64 yards on 44 attempts in last week’s game, almost 100 yards below its season average.  SSU is ranked second in the conference in rushing defense, allowing just 73.3 ypg through three contests.

Statistically Speaking
Salisbury is averaging 20 points per game and is ranked second in the conference in rushing offense with 195 yards per game. Individually, Tony Ellis (111.7 ypg) leads the ACFC in rushing, with Reggie Boyce (85.7 ypg) second.  Freshman QB Mac Mollet has completed 50% of his passes (9 of 18) for 82 yards. Ellis (4 receptions) and TE Josh Stark (3 receptions) are the leading receivers. Defensively, LB Pat Brannan leads the team and ranks third in the conference with 10.7 tackles per game. Brannan also recorded his first interception of the season in last week’s game. Senior DE Khalid Attia has three of SSU’s six sacks this season. Salisbury leads the conference with five interceptions.

About Greensboro
Salisbury and Greensboro have met just once previously, a 42-13 victory for The Pride at home last year. Greensboro, now playing its fourth season of football, opened the year with a 38-13 win over Chowan before losing 17-14 at Ferrum in overtime last week. The Pride is averaging 26.0 points and 298 yards of total offense per game. Paul Louis is the leading ground gainer with an average of 38.5 ypg. QB Wes Wilder is averaging 151.5 ypg through the air, with two touchdown passes. Mark Bauer has been his favorite target thus far, with nine receptions and a 14.4 yard average per catch. LB Jamie Mills leads the defense with 17 tackles.

Sea Gull Nibbles
Senior Seth Haskins leads the conference in punt returns with a 24.8 average…FS Du’Juan Wilson recorded his first interception of the season against Methodist…SS Corey Brown finished with a personal-best five tackles and one pass breakup in last week’s game…Ellis is averaging 146.3 all-purpose yards per game, tops in the ACFC… Salisbury registered a season-high 16 first downs in last week’s game…The Sea Gulls have scored 28 of their 60 points this season in the fourth quarter, an average of 9.3 points per game…Punter Jason Bungori is averaging 31.9 yards per punt, including three punts inside the 20.

Saturday’s game will be broadcast on tape-delay on Access Channel 26 in Salisbury. The game will have multiple showings on Access 26 during the days following the game. SSU-TV, under the direction of Jason Vaughn, will produce the broadcast.

SEA GULL NOTEBOOK
Sept. 18, 2000

Women’s Soccer (7-0) Off to Another Fast Start

The women’s soccer team improved to 7-0 overall with its most impressive win of the season, a 3-1 victory over #5 ranked North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday.  The victory moved the Sea Gulls up one spot to fourth in this week’s Mid-Atlantic Region ranking.  Fast starts are nothing new for the Gulls, who have opened four of the past five seasons with winning streaks of five games or better, including 8-0 last season.

Kelly Reaches Milestone for Men’s Soccer (4-1)

The men’s soccer team, ranked fourth in the South Region for the second straight week, posted its second straight shutout on Saturday, beating Eastern Mennonite 5-0. Sophomore CR Krauss scored twice and junior Adam Young had two assists as the men improved to 4-1 overall.  Junior Paul Kelly also tallied his 25th career goal in the win, becoming just the eighth SSU player to reach that scoring milestone in the 64-year history of soccer at Salisbury State. Kelly’s 65 career points ranks him fifth all-time in team history.

Free Youth Soccer Clinic

The men’s soccer team will host a free soccer skills clinic this Saturday as part of the University’s day-long 75th Anniversary Fun Day celebration. The one hour clinic is open to all kids between the ages of 8-14, and will start promptly at 10 a.m. at the SSU Varsity Field located on Wayne Ave. The SSU players and staff will concentrate on four areas of emphasis during the clinic: dribbling, shooting, passing and ball handling.  Advance registration is not necessary. The Sea Gulls host Shenandoah in a non-conference game at 2 p.m.  Admission is free.

Field Hockey (4-2) Shares Tournament Title

The field hockey team, ranked 14th in the nation, finished as co-champions of the annual SSU Invitational.  SSU finished with a 2-1 tournament record, downing Denison 2-0 and Wesley 4-2, but losing to Eastern Mennonite 2-1. Three teams finished with 2-1 marks, with Salisbury and Wesley declared co-champions due to a tie for the fewest goals allowed (4) in the three games.  Goalie Joanna Fenske recorded two shutouts during the week, making eight saves in victories over Johns Hopkins (1-0) and Denison.

Remember the Last Time?

Despite losing 17-14 at Methodist last week, the football team (1-2 overall) accomplished something that it hadn’t done in five years.  RBs Tony Ellis (114 yds) and Reggie Boyce (124 yds) both rushed for over 100 yards in last week’s game, the first time since November 11, 1995 that the Sea Gulls have had two rushers hit the century mark in the same game.  Admission to this week’s home game against Greensboro is free to all spectators as Salisbury State University celebrates its 75th anniversary with Community and Youth Day at Sea Gull Stadium.  Kickoff is 1 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER WELCOMES GREENSBORO IN TOP 20 CLASH
Sept. 8, 2000

Teams Ranked #1 and #3 in South Region

Salisbury, MD – The Salisbury State men’s soccer team, off to a 2-0 start, hosts Greensboro (NC) College on Saturday at 2:00 pm.  The Sea Gulls, ranked 20th in the preseason, have climbed to18th in this week’s national poll, and are ranked 3rd in the South Region.  Greensboro, also 2-0 overall, is currently ranked 4th nationally and is number one in the South Region.

The Sea Gulls are 2-6 all-time against Greensboro, with both wins coming last year.  Salisbury defeated The Pride 2-0 early in the regular season, then defeated Greensboro by the same score in the NCAA Tournament’s South Region final.

“This game against Greensboro will be a key match-up for us,” said SSU Head Coach Gerry DiBartolo. “Greensboro is a fast team, therefore we will have to come out and play strong from the beginning and not get caught up in their style of play. We will have to focus on defense and keep the ball away from our goal.”

Salisbury won the Elmer Lord Tournament last weekend with a 2-0 record.  The first game of the tournament against Western Maryland resulted in a 2-1 win.  “I was proud that the team was able to pick up play twice after two lightning delays and still perform like they did,” said DiBartolo.  “However, our overall performance needed improvement.  We seemed to come out with very little energy.  Sunday’s 6-0 win over Dickinson proved that we are able to come out strong and focused for 90 minutes. The team played very well and the tournament was a good learning experience.”

Among the key players for the Sea Gulls was senior Rusty Tritsch, who earned the tournament’s MVP award.  He finished with two goals and two assists. Sophomore C.R. Krauss totaled three goals, all against Dickinson, with two goals by Matt Bowman and one by Steve Ritchie.  Senior goalie Mike Svehla contributed seven saves while facing just 13 shots in the two games.

The women’s soccer team is also at home on Saturday, hosting the College of Notre Dame in non-conference action beginning at 1 p.m.

The Series
Salisbury leads 3-1. The Sea Gulls won the first three meetings between the teams, while the Pioneers won the last meeting, a record-setting 52-45 win in 1998. That game set a new SSU record for most combined points scored (97) and yielded 13 touchdowns and 1,053 yards of total offense

All-Time Scores
1982      SSU 54, WPU 22
1983      SSU 23, WPU 12
1997    SSU 16, WPU 14
1998    WPU 52, SSU 45

Last Week: Gulls Fall Short
Salisbury came up two-points shy in its quest to win the season-opener at Newport News Apprentice last Saturday, losing 20-18. Trailing by eight, the Sea Gulls marched 70 yards in six plays, capped by a four-yard TD pass from QB Bryan Driskell to TE Josh Stark with two seconds remaining in the game. SSU failed to convert the two-point conversion pass needed to send the game to overtime.

Offensive Highlights
A number of Sea Gulls enjoyed impressive season debuts in last week’s contest. Junior FB Reggie Boyce led the ground attack with a career-high 79 yards rushing on just 10 carries, including a 40-yard touchdown burst in the third quarter. Sophomore RB Tony Ellis added 58 yards rushing and 36 yards receiving. Driskell finished 7 of 18 passing for 136 yards and two touchdowns. The Gulls averaged 5.5 yards per play in the game.

Coach Wood’s Words
“Overall, I was satisfied with our effort last week, but not pleased with the result.  We knew going into the game that big plays would likely be the difference, and I believe that they were.

“Among the positives, I thought our offensive line did a decent job of blocking, although there are still some areas we can improve on. Having Reggie Boyce get off to a good start is also a nice plus for us. Jason Bungori did a good job of punting and placed his kickoffs very well. Tom McCarthy emerged as a solid player on the defensive line.”

The New Receiving Corps
A balanced receiving corps featured six different players with at least one reception in last week’s game.  Senior Aubrey Harrison, making his first start at wide receiver after playing in the defensive backfield for three seasons, hauled in his first collegiate reception for a 30-yard touchdown. Freshman Jeff Boteler had a key 27-yard reception on SSU’s final drive, and starting FS Du’Juan Wilson added a 30-yard catch in his first-ever appearance on offense.

Brannan Plugs the Holes
Junior LB Pat Brannan, SSU’s leading tackler last season, picked up right where he left off with 16 tackles against Newport. Brannan had six solo stops and assisted on 10 other tackles while also recording one tackle for loss. Senior LB Anthony Parker added 12 tackles and forced a Newport fumble, which Wilson recovered.  Defensive tackle Justin Mays finished with eight tackles.

Scouting the Pioneers
First-year Head Coach Larry Arico inherits a team that finished 2-8 last season while closing the year with six straight losses.  Newcomers are likely to fill many of the key positions.  Last year’s top three rushers are gone, leaving junior Tom DelMauro, who had 158 yards, as the top returning ground gainer. Sophomore QB Mark Janis, who passed for 341 yards and three TDs last year, is the only experienced returnee at the position.  Senior WR Fuquan Jamison is the top returning receiver with 11 catches for 153 yards in 1999. Junior DB Kenyatta Jefferson is the top returning tackler after recording 51 stops last year.

Sea Gull Nibbles
The Sea Gulls averaged nearly 20 yards per punt return last week, with Du’Juan Wilson gaining 27 yards on his only return and Seth Haskins totaling 30 yards on two returns…Jason Bungori averaged 34.9 yards on seven punts…DE Tom McCarthy and SS Corey Brown each registered two tackles for loss last week…SSU begins conference play next week at Methodist…The Gulls return home on September 23 to host Greensboro on Community and Youth Day at Sea Gull Stadium.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS HOST SSU OPENER ON SATURDAY
August 30, 2000

Salisbury Hosts 15-Team Meet at Winter Place Park

SALISBURY, MD – The Salisbury State men’s and women’s cross country teams begin their 2000 season at home on Saturday, September 2 with the annual SSU Opener at Winter Place Park.  The 15-team field includes Division I entries from Navy and UMES as well as nationally-ranked Division II Millersville.

The 5K women’s race begins at 11 a.m, followed by the 8K men’s race at noon. The awards and trophy presentation for both divisions is scheduled for 1 p.m.

“I think this is a good meet to start the year for us,” said second year SSU Head Coach Jim Jones. “There’s obviously a bit of an advantage to be at home and run on a course that we’re familiar with and that we’ve practiced on. It’s a flat and fast course.”

Jones also appears to be pleased with his team’s conditioning. “Summer training went well and its obvious that our athletes did the work they needed during the time they were away,” said Jones. “I’m pleased with the shape that our runners are in at this point.”

Junior Suzy McCulloch, the defending Capital Athletic Conference and NCAA Mideast Region champion, is expected to lead the women’s team again in 2000. McCulloch won seven of her eight races last year and finished 48th in the NCAA Division III national championship meet.  Sophomore Scottie Morris is also among the top returnees for the Sea Gulls.

Top returnees on the SSU men’s team include senior Larry O’Hara, sophomore Jeremy Beall and senior Dave Frei. O’Hara earned first team all-conference honors last year and was named men’s team MVP. Beall was the CAC’s Rookie of the Year award winner.

The Sea Gulls follow Saturday’s season-opening race with visits to the Lebanon Valley (PA) Invitational and NYU Invitational over the next three weeks before returning to Winter Place Park for the annual Tidewater Classic on September 30.
