SU breezes by Hood to move on
SALISBURY, Md. - The
second-seeded Salisbury University men’s tennis team played host to No. 7 seed
Hood College Monday afternoon in a first round Capital Athletic Conference
tournament match. The Sea Gulls rank, No. 8 in the Atlantic South Region, earned
the victory as they swept the undermanned Blazers, 9-0.
Salisbury (15-6, 6-1 CAC) was led by freshmen Evan Thomas (18-2),
Jason Williams (7-3) and junior Dean
Sonetirot
(3-0) who all won their singles matches in straight sets. Thomas played his
first match in the No. 1 spot and improved his team-high win streak to three
matches. With the victory Williams is now 4-0 in matches where he has started in
the No. 2 through No. 5 spot. Hood (5-11, 1-5 CAC) had to forfeit three singles
and one doubles match.
SU continued its dominance in doubles behind the teams of junior Brendan
Kincaid and Thomas and senior Sean Larson with sophomore Shane
Barry. Kincaid and Thomas were paired up for the first time this year and
rolled to an 8-0 win. Kincaid is now 15-4 in No. 1 doubles as he has been the
most consistent Sea Gull in doubles action. Larson and Barry upped their record
to 2-3 as they won their first No. 2 doubles match.
Salisbury will move on to the CAC semifinals to play the winner of No. 3 seeded
York (Pa.) College or No. 6 seeded St. Mary’s (Md.) College which was postponed
on Monday. The Gulls will host the winner on April 19. SU blanked YCP and SMC
9-0 in each of their match ups this season.
