Whittington Earns Conference Player of the Week

SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury men’s soccer senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls) was named the CAC’s Player of the Week  on Monday for the week ending October 23. Whittington wins the award following his three goal performance in Salisbury’s 3-2 victory over Christopher Newport University last Wednesday. This is Whittington’s second such recognition from the conference. He previously won Player of the Week for the week ending September 26. 

Whittington continues to lead the Sea Gulls in scoring with 12 goals and five assists, good for 29 points. He also leads the CAC in goals, points, goals per game, and points per game. He has also chipped in seven game winning goals on the season. 

Those receiving honorable mention include: Kyle Marks of York College; Matthew Eby of Gallaudet Unviersity; Alex Pyzik of St. Mary’s College; Justin Kessler of Marymount University; and Andrew Shin of the University of Mary Washington.

Salisbury Men's Soccer Remains at No. 5 in NSCAA Weekly Poll

NSCAA WEEKLY POLL - OCT. 25
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men’s soccer team remained at the No. 5 spot in the NSCAA/Adidas National Rankings released on Tuesday. The Sea Gull (14-0-1) rebounded to No. 5 from dropping to No. 7 on October 5 with five straight victories, including two against conference opponents Goucher College and the University of Mary Washington. 

The top ten remains unchanged from the previous week. Messiah College (15-0-0) remains in the top spot, followed by Ohio Wesleyan (16-0-0) at No. 2; the University of Rochester in New York (14-0-0) at No. 3; Trinity University of Texas (14-0-1) at No. 4; and Salisbury at No. 5. 

Whitworth College (13-1-1) remains at No. 6, followed by Williams College (12-1-0) at No. 7; Ramapo College (11-1-2) at No. 8; Eastern University (15-0-0) at No. 9; and UC Santa Cruz (12-1-1) at No. 10. CAC conference opponent York College (12-2-2) moved up from No. 22 to No. 18. 

The top 25 welcomed six new schools to the rankings: Carnegie Mellon University (11-1-1) at No. 19; Bowdoin College (10-2-1) at No. 21; Union College (13-2-1) at No. 22; Richard Stockton College (11-4-1) at No. 23; Baldwin-Wallace College (13-4-1) at No. 24; and Virginia Wesleyan College (12-4-0), tied at No. 25 with the University of Chicago (11-4-0). 

In the South rankings, Salisbury hold the top spot, followed by Emory University (14-1-0) at No. 2; conference opponent York College (12-2-2) at No. 3; Virginia Wesleyan College (12-4-0) at No.4; and North Carolina Wesleyan College (11-4-0) at No.5. Conference opponent St. Mary’s College (9-6-1) are ranked No. 10. 

The Sea Gull offense continues to be lead by senior captain Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls), who has 12 goals and five assists for 29 points; and senior Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown), with seven goals and four assists for 18 points.

In goal, the team relied on sophomore Matt Blue (Easton, MD/Easton) for eight games while senior goalkeeper Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, MD/Calvert) recovered from a broken hand.  Blue posted a 6-0-1 record, saving 93.5% of shots on goal and recording a 0.29 goals against average. Cranford has since returned and has posted a 5-0-0 record, saving 87.5% of shots on goal and a 0.67 goals against average.

No.5 Salisbury Men's Soccer Holds off Christopher Newport, 3-2

SALISBURY, Md. -The Salisbury University men’s soccer team gave up two goals for the first time during the 2005 season Wednesday afternoon, but the No.1-ranked team in the NCAA Division III South Region had enough offensive power to knock off No.4 Christopher Newport University, 3-2, at the SU Soccer Complex.

Sea Gull senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, Md./Potomac Falls) scored the hat trick, using assists from seniors Reid Klopp (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) and Chris Mills (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown), as Salisbury, which moved up two spots to the No.5-ranking in the NSCAA national poll, improved to 14-0-1 overall. Christopher Newport, which was allowing less than a goal per contest, fell to 9-4.

Whittington and the Gulls got out of the gate quickly as the team’s assist leader (5) took a leading pass from Klopp on Salisbury’s first possession and scored from 10 yards out just 30 seconds in to the match.

The Captains responded with a goal of their own at the 4:57 mark when Daniel Fogarty took a pass, dribbled and sliced a low shot past SU goalie Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Calvert).

Whittington put Salisbury back on top 2-1 at the 25:13 mark. A Mills shot on goal bounced off the left post, but Whittington was there to pound the ball into the back of the net.

Fogarty scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season just 2:40 later after Kenny Huttman’s shot was blocked by a SU defender and he was there to knock it in the goal, tying the score at 2-2.

Cranford came up with a leaping save with 14:35 remaining in the half when Huttman’s free kick just outside the box sailed over the Sea Gull defenders who were lined up, tailing in toward the net. But Cranford was there to make the catch, forcing the 2-2 tie at intermission.

The game remained tied for quite some time in the second half, but Whittington broke the tie with 7:38 remaining with his team-leading 12^th goal of the year off a pass from Mills.

Salisbury, which is ranked second nationally in goals against average (0.21), and first in shots on goal save percentage (.947), held off the late CNU charge, keeping the ball out of its own net. SU, which out shot CNU 16-13 for the game, owned a 9-1 advantage in the second half. The Gulls held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Cranford improved to 5-0 on the year in goal, surrendering a pair of goals, but recording four saves. Jonathon Anderson took the setback despite turning in five saves.

No. 7 Salisbury Men's Soccer Tested Often, Defeats Roanoke, 1-0
October 15, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. - Looking to regain his all-conference form, Salisbury senior goalkeeper Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, VA/Calvert) was tested often against the Maroons of Roanoke College.  He faced seven shots on the day and stopped all of them to preserve the shutout. 

The lone goal came early, as senior midfielder J.J. King (Damascus, MD/Damascus) scored at the 2:49 mark on a pass from the right side by senior Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown). 

Late the in the first half, Roanoke nearly tied the game as Maroon player Michael Rouhaha took a shot from the right of the goal net. The shot beat Jason Cranford, but it was hard enough to go just wide of the goal mouth to preserve the Sea Gull lead. 

Late in the second half, the Sea Gull nearly scored their second goal of the game.  A shot from the right of the goal mouth by senior David Pusinsky (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) beat Maroon goalkeeper Austin Rose but went to wide to the right of the goal mouth. 

There were two cautions issued in the game.  Roanoke’s Adam Gray received a yellow card for tripping at the 29:12 mark and Salisbury’s Dico Doran (Oswego, NY/Oswego) received a yellow card for tripping as well at the 44:19 mark.

No. 7 Salisbury out shot Roanoke 11-9. Corner kicks were even at six. 

Salisbury will host Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, October 19 at 3:30 p.m. at the SU Athletic Complex. The Captains are ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA South Regional rankings.

Sea Gulls Secure Home Field in CAC Tournament, 2-1
October 13, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men’s soccer team has not given up many goals this season and has remained unbeaten because of it. No other victory was more important than Thursday’s win as the No.7-ranked Sea Gulls allowed only its third goal of the year, but had to go to overtime before taking a 2-1 Capital Athletic Conference victory over University of Mary Washington. The win clinches the home field throughout the upcoming CAC tournament and improves SU to 12-0-1 overall, 6-0 in league play. The Eagles dropped to 5-5-3 on the year, 2-1-2 in league play.

Senior Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Calvert) returned in goal for the Sea Gulls. He had missed 10 games with a broken hand. He improved to 3-0 on the year, picking up six saves while giving up his first goal of the season. Elliott Jones took the setback for Mary Washington, surrendering both goals while recording six saves.

Salisbury, which out shot Mary Washington 17-14, jumped on top 1-0 after 65 scoreless minutes. J.J. King (Damascus, Md./Damascus) scored his second goal of the season when Bill Whittington (Towson, Md./Potomac Falls) battled Elliott on the left side of the box and then found King for the easy tap-in at the 65:09 mark.

The Eagles forced the extra period at 69:24 when Andrew Shin dribbled past three SU defenders in the middle of the field and then sliced a shot past Cranford.

Just 1:18 into overtime, Whittington scored his team-leading ninth goal of the year when Chris Tracey (Pittsburgh Pa./Peters Township) flipped a pass across from the right side of the box while falling down. Whittington was there for the game-winner eight yards out.

Salisbury recorded six corner kicks to five for the Eagles. The Sea Gulls committed 19 fouls, compared to 17 for UMW. Salisbury’s Scott Forney (Crofton, Md./South River) and Mary Washington’s Vincent Kooijman each had one yellow card.

The Sea Gulls will return to action at home Saturday when they host Roanoke College Saturday at 2 p.m. before welcoming Christopher Newport University to SU Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Salisbury Men’s Soccer Continues to Roll, Defeats Goucher, 1-0

SALISBURY, Md. - After dropping seven spots in the weekly National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas poll this week despite still not registering a loss, the Salisbury University men’s soccer team continue to roll along in the 2005 season Wednesday. The Gulls out shot Goucher College, 22-6, en route to a 1-0 victory at the SU Soccer Complex.

Salisbury improved to 11-0-1 on the year and 5-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action. No.9-ranked SU has given up only two goals in 1,109 minutes this season and has yet to taste defeat. The Sea Gulls have only lost once in their last 34 matches and twice in their last 46 matches. Goucher, which began the season 3-0, failed to pick up a win for the eighth consecutive match, falling to 3-6-2 on the year, 0-3 in CAC play. 

SU’s Matt Blue (Easton, Md./Easton) improved his record in goal to 6-0-1 on the year as he recorded his fifth shutout. He picked up two saves. Tom Feuerstein took the loss for Goucher, allowing one goal and recording five saves. 

After a scoreless first half, the Sea Gulls scored the winning goal at the 53:55 mark when J.J. King (Damascus, Md./Damascus) had a shot ricochet off the left post and Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) was there to slam the ball into the back of the net. Mills finished the game with a pair of shots, while Dan Butler (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) led the Sea Gulls with four. 

Salisbury will continued its current four-game homestand Saturday when the Sea Gulls take on University of Mary Washington in a CAC matchup at 2 p.m. SU will then host Roanoke College on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.

Salisbury Escapes with a 2-1 Victory Over Lynchburg College
October 2, 2005

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Salisbury No. 2 Men’s Soccer escaped with a victory over Lynchburg College, 2-1, as they warded off a Hornet’s late rally Sunday afternoon. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Blue (Easton, MD/Easton) stopped four of five shots to preserve the victory. 

After a scoreless first half, senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls) scored his team high eighth goal at the 59:14 mark as he redirected a free kick from junior Wijy Jones (Millersville, MD/Old Mill), who was credited with the assist. Junior midfielder Layne Crothers (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) scored his sixth goal of the season when he placed a header that crossed from senior Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) past the Hornets goalkeeper Corey Zimmerman at the 86:09 mark. 

Crother’s goal proved to be the game winner as the Hornets tallied their lone goal forty seconds later when Win Wharton scored past Blue at the 86:49 mark. 

Lynchburg out shot Salisbury 18-8 and had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3. Salisbury’s close win improves the team to 10-0-1 on the season. 

The Sea Gulls return home Wednesday, October 5, when they host conference opponent Goucher College.  Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. at the SU Athletic Complex.

Salisbury Men’s Soccer Plays To a 0-0 Tie With Greensboro

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Salisbury men’s soccer team traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina Saturday and played to a 0-0 tie.  The goalkeepers were keys to the game, as Salisbury sophomore goalkeeper Matt Blue (Easton, MD/Easton) and Greensboro senior goalkeeper Matt Brown stopped seven shots apiece. 

Senior forward Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, Md/South Hagerstown) led the offense for Salisbury with four shots.  Senior forward Reid Klopp (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) had three shots, followed by senior back Dan Butler (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) with two shots. 

Greensboro was led by Hunter Burrows, Eric Hatchett, Anderson Marchi, and Geoff George, all with two shots apiece. 

The referees handed out numerous cautions in this game.  Yellow Cards were handed out to Charlie Rierson, Eric Hatchett, and Josh Bridges of Greensboro and junior midfielder Andrew Henciak (Bel Air, MD/Loyola) of Salisbury.  Greensboro’s Geoff George received a red card and an automatic ejection from the game in the 103rd minute. 

Salisbury out-shot Greensboro 16-12 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 10-1. 

Salisbury will travel to Lynchburg, Virginia Sunday to take on Hornets of Lynchburg College.  Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.  The Sea Gulls return home Wednesday, October 5 to take on conference opponent Goucher College at the SU Athletic Complex at 4:00 p.m.

No.2 Sea Gulls Keep Season, Conference Record Perfect, 2-1

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. - Despite giving up its first goal of the season after eight scoreless starts, the No.2-ranked Salisbury University men’s soccer team kept its perfect season record intact (9-0) while improving to 4-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play Wednesday with a 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s College. St. Mary’s fell to 5-4-1 on the season, 0-1-1 in CAC play.

The Sea Gulls had played 814 minutes this season without giving up a goal, despite losing their starting and backup goalies with broken hands earlier this month. Matt Blue (Easton, Md./Easton), who is 4-0 in the goal this season, allowing 0.27 goals per game, recorded seven saves in goal. Seahawk sophomore defender Sean Matthews headed in a centering pass from the left side from sophomore forward Mikael Tigrett to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 85:32 mark, but St. Mary’s was unable to tie the game..

Salisbury senior forward Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) put the visitors on top with a goal at the 12:19 mark. Mills took a centering pass from senior forward Reid Klopp (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) on a short corner attempt by Salisbury and nailed a high shot that hit the crossbar, bounced down to the ground, back up to the crossbar, and just over the goal line for the score.

The Gulls made it a 2-0 contest in the 34th minute of play when junior midfielder Wijy Jones (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) scored. Jones converted on a centering pass form the right side by senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, Md./Potomac Falls) to tally the eventual game-winner.

St. Mary’s junior goalkeeper Greg Kamerow notched six saves in the loss for the Seahawks.

Salisbury held a 23-16 advantage in total shots while both teams were awarded four corner kicks. Salisbury was whistled for 12 fouls in the contest, including two yellow cards, while the Seahawks were called for nine fouls.

The Sea Gulls will return to action this weekend, visiting Greensboro College Saturday at 12-noon, then taking on Lynchburg College on the road Sunday at 1 p.m. The next home date is Oct. 5 against Goucher College.

Salisbury's Whittington Named Conference Player of the Week
September 26, 2005

SALISBURY, Md. - Senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls) was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Week today for the week ending September 25, following his four goals and nine points against Gallaudet and North Carolina Wesleyan. 

Whittington’s offensive heroics improved the Sea Gulls record to 8-0 on the season. He scored three goals and an assist in the 11-0 rout of Gallaudet and one goal against North Carolina Wesleyan. 

Others to receive honorable mention were Mary Washington’s Chris Dolan, St. Mary’s Alex Pyzik, and York’ Chris Ports. 

The soccer team travels Wednesday to St. Mary’s City, Maryland to take on conference opponent St. Mary’s College at 4:00 p.m.

Sea Gulls Record Shutout for the Eighth Time, Defeat NC Wesleyan 2-0

SALISBURY, Md. – The Sea Gulls men’s soccer team extended their shutout streak to 731 minutes following their 2-0 victory over visiting North Carolina Wesleyan. Seniors Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls) and Tim Lane (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) scored the goals for the Sea Gulls.

Whittington scored in the eighth minute off of a pass from the left of the goal mouth from J.J. King (Damascus, MD/Damascus).  Whittington then kicked high into the goal mouth past North Carolina Wesleyan goalkeeper Jordan Dumford for his eighth goal of the season. 

Lane scored his goal off of a goalie rebound shot by King in the 26th minute. It was Lane’s second goal of the season. 

Despite the lack of offense in the second half, the action on the field was very eventful. Salisbury and North Carolina Wesleyan traded possession throughout the half as neither team mounted a serious offensive attack.

Late in the second half, the referee handed out two yellow cards and two red cards. North Carolina Wesleyan’s Stephen Tupy and Lane of the Sea Gulls received the yellow cards.  North Carolina’s Omar Macias for an altercation with a Sea Gull player and Lamin Cham, who tripped Salisbury’s Dave Kroening (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) as he traveled with the ball through midfield, received the red cards. 

Salisbury looks to continue it’s shutout streak on Wednesday as they travel to St. Mary’s City, MD to take on conference opponent St. Mary’s College.  Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m.

Salisbury senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, Md./Potomac Falls) paced the Sea Gulls with three goals and an assist, while freshman forward Nick Malone (Salisbury, Md./James Bennett) added two goals and a pair of helpers.

The visitors opened the scoring in the fourth minute of play when Whittington took a feed from classmate midfielder J.J. King (Damascus, Md./Damascus) and booted a low shot just inside the right post. Shortly thereafter, King would hit the top-right corner for an unassisted scoring strike, giving Salisbury an early 2-0 lead. The visitors held a 5-0 advantage at the break.

Malone rounded the scoring out at 11-0 in the 89th minute. Bison (0-7, 0-1 CAC) senior Daniel Wathen and rookie Bryan Baltazar split time shielding the net and finished with a combined seven saves, while sophomore Matt Blue (Easton, Md./Easton) and freshman Greg Wellinghoff  (Salisbury, Md./James Bennett) played 45 minutes apiece and recorded five saves for Salisbury.

The Sea Gulls will put their perfect mark on the line once again Saturday when they host North Carolina Wesleyan College at 2 p.m.

Salisbury Men's Soccer Outlasts York, 1-0
September 17, 2005

YORK, Pa. - Salisbury was credited with a team goal late in the second half to outlast York College today, 1-0, in York, Pennsylvania.  On the play, senior forward Bill Whittington (Towson, MD/Potomac Falls (Va.) appeared to score off of a low hard shot received from the corner, but the referees credited a team goal when they saw that the ball had been deflected off of a York player. 

The Sea Gulls were led offensively by senior midfielder Chris Tracy (Pittsburgh, PA/Peters Township) and senior forward Christopher Mills (Hagerstown, MD/South Hagerstown) with three shots apiece.  Whittington added two shots, along with two apiece for senior midfielders Dave Pusinsky (Baltimore, MD/Sparrows Point) and J.J. King (Damascus, MD/Damascus). 

In goal, sophomore Matt Blue (Easton, MD/Easton) made four saves. 

York outshot Salisbury 13-12 and had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. 

Salisbury will travel to Washington, D.C. to take on conference foe Gallaudet on Tuesday, September 20 at 4:00 p.m.  The Sea Gulls will return home next Saturday, September 24, to take on North Carolina Wesleyan at 2:00 p.m. at the SU Athletic Complex.

Salisbury Records Shutout Against SUNY Potsdam, 3-0

ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Through five games in the 2005 season, the Salisbury University men’s soccer team is about as perfect as it can be. Not only are the No.3-ranked Sea Gulls undefeated at 5-0, but they have yet to be scored upon. The team that recorded 13 shutouts a year ago and had a 23-game unbeaten streak is off to a great start this year after defeating SUNY-Potsdam, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at the Seahawk Invitational at St. Mary’s College. 

The Sea Gulls, who have outscored their opponents 21-0 this season, held Potsdam (0-4-2) to only three shots on the afternoon and continued to shut out opponents for the third straight game despite the fact that starting goalkeeper Jason Cranford (Chesapeake Beach, Md./Calvert) is sidelined indefinitely with a broken hand. In his absence, junior Scott McGuire (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) improved to 3-0 on the year. 

Salisbury kept the pressure offensively as well, outshooting Potsdam 33-3. SU held a 16-1 advantage in shots in the first half and 17-2 in the second half. 

The Sea Gulls took the lead for good with 8:59 gone in the contest when senior Bill Whittington (Towson, Md./Potomac Falls) scored his third goal of the season on a pass from teammate J.J. King (Damascus, Md./Damascus). 

Salisbury added an insurance goal with 14:13 remaining in the half when senior Tim Lane (Ellicott City, Md./Damascus) scored on a penalty kick. Senior Chris Mills (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) added the final goal of the game at the 81:35 mark. 

SU will be back in action Saturday when the Gulls put their 1-0 Capital Athletic Conference on the line at York College. Game time is 2 p.m.
