NCAA Division III Tournament - 2nd Round
Friday, November 15, 2002

Roanoke, VA - Messiah scored midway through the second half to account for the game’s only goal as the Falcons eliminated #6 ranked Salisbury from the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Sea Gulls, champions of the Capital Athletic Conference, finish the year with a 15-3-1 record.

Messiah (19-2-1) advances to Saturday’s regional final to face Greensboro, which eliminated
host Roanoke 2-1 on penalty kicks in Friday’s other regional semifinal.

Following a scoreless first half, Messiah junior Matt Bills netted the game’s only goal in the
64th minute, tallying his team-leading 25th of the season.

Messiah finished with a 17-2 advantage in total shots, and 6-2 edge on corner kicks. Salisbury’s senior goalie Tom Paparounis finished with 10 saves, while Messiah goalie Dave Casper made two saves to record the shutout.

Messiah's goal snapped a streak of four straight SU shutouts and over 400 minutes in which the Gulls had not allowed a goal. The 2002 Sea Gulls set a new team record for fewest goals allowed in a season, permitting just seven goals in 19 games.

Salisbury, which had won five straight and 12 of 13 entering Friday’s match, posted its 11th straight winning season in 2002 and earned its third NCAA Tournament berth in four years.
