Streak Busters! Salisbury ends York's 49-game unbeaten mark
YORK, Pa. - Salisbury University stunned the Division III men's soccer world as it ended the longest unbeaten streak in the nation with a 1-0 victory over No. 4 York (Pa.) College on Saturday afternoon before a huge crowd of 900 on the road.

"I am very proud of our team to go on the road, play hard and come out with a victory," said Salisbury coach Gerry DiBartolo. "It must be a tough burden to keep winning with all the pressure of the streak. When we meet up with York it is always a tough game no matter what circumstances surround the game."

This is the first loss for the two-time Capital Athletic Conference defending champions in over two years as the Spartans went 44-0-5 during the streak. The last loss the Spartans suffered was a 1-0 loss to Salisbury on September 17, 2005. Today's loss also ends York's 16-game CAC winning streak.

Sophomore Kyle Sterling broke the scoreless game in the 79th minute as he scored on a shot to the far post to give the Gulls (6-3-1, 2-0 CAC) the lead. Sterling’s fifth goal of the year proved to be the game-winner to gives the Gulls the upset.

SU goalie Greg Wellinghoff was brilliant as he recorded three saves including a point blank header from Mike Whalen from five yards out during a small offensive barrage from York (Pa.) in the 76th minute to preserve the shutout. The SU defense earned its eighth shutout in 10 games and held York (9-1, 2-1 CAC) to only one second half shot and seven overall. The Gulls defense also held the 2006 CAC Player of the Year and first-team All-American Andrew Wheeler to three shots, one on goal, in the win.

"It was a well played game for both teams," said DiBartolo. "We had a couple of things we wanted to concentrate on like making them play in front of us while we wanted to spread them out when we controlled the ball."

Salisbury and York met twice last season as the Spartans won both contests. York took the first game with a 2-1 overtime victory in Salisbury on September 16. The second time around the Spartans defeated the Sea Gulls in the CAC Semifinals with a 2-0 home win on November 1. Salisbury is now 24-9-5 all-time against York since the two schools met for the first time back in 1972.

The Sea Gulls will now return home to host three consecutive CAC matches in a seven day span as they begin with Wesley College on October 3 at 4 p.m.
