Sterling
keeps Sea Gulls on winning track
SALISBURY, Md.
- The Salisbury University men’s soccer team squared off against Rt. 13 rival
Wesley College on Wednesday afternoon and came away with a 5-0 shutout at the SU
Soccer Complex in the first-ever meeting between the two schools as Capital
Athletic Conference members. This is Wesley’s first year in the CAC.
Salisbury (7-3-1, 3-0)
wasted no time as current CAC Athlete of the Week Kyle Sterling scored on
a point blank shot in the box in the 6th minute off an assist from senior
Dave Kroening. The assist is the first of the year for Kroening. Sterling, a
sophomore, added a second goal in the game on an unassisted strike in the 63rd
minute. The final goal of the game for the Gulls was Sterling’s seventh for the
season, a team best.
Junior Romaine Bruney sparked the Sea Gulls off the bench as he hit a
streaking Kevin Mongello who scored in the 37th minute to end a 30 minute
scoreless drought. Bruney scored the next goal for SU on a bending right-footed
blast just before halftime where the Sea Gulls led 3-0. Freshman Dave
Corrigan recorded an assist on the Bruney strike.
Sophomore goalie Greg Wellinghoff was once again spectacular for the
Gulls as he recorded his fifth win on the season and added 61 minutes of
scoreless play. Junior Matt Blue and sophomore Josh Scotton both
contributed double-digit minutes in between the pipes to preserve the team
shutout. The shutout was the teams third straight and eighth on the season.
Wesley (4-8, 3-2 CAC) dropped its second conference game after starting the
season with three straight CAC wins. Wolverine goalie Nick Talarico gave up five
goals however played great in the net and recorded seven saves. Talarico tried
to contain the Gulls the best he could as he denied several would-be goals
throughout the game.
Sophomore Alex Hargrove added a score in the 52nd minute to put the Gulls
up 4-0 by way of a well placed chip from freshman Joe Rubel.
SU dominated the
stat sheet once again as they outshot Wesley 21-4 and held a 6-1 advantage in
corner kicks. The maroon and gold now improve to 10-1-1 against Wesley all-time.
Salisbury will now shift its attention to University of Mary Washington as it
hosts the Eagles at home on Saturday, October 6. First place in the CAC will be
up for grabs as both teams enter with perfect conference records. The game time
is slated for 2:30 p.m.
