Salisbury stings Randolph-Macon with 7-0 shutout
SALISBURY, Md
.- The Salisbury University men’s soccer team answered any scoring questions Saturday afternoon as it put away Randolph-Macon College, 7-0, in a non-conference game before a crowd of 225 at the SU Soccer Complex.

Salisbury (3-2-1) got off to a quick start when sophomore Kyle Sterling made a shifty move in the box and pinpointed a shot in the back of the net from a tough acute angle on the right side of the goal. Sterling’s third goal of the season proved to be the game-winner for the Gulls.

SU saw six different players score a goal, led by sophomore midfielder Alex Hargrove who scored back-to-back goals in a five-minute span in the second half.

The Sea Gulls ended the first half when junior Romaine Bruney, a transfer from Herkimer Community College, scored his first SU goal off a bang-bang double assist from freshman Chris Finney (two assists) and senior Andrew Henciak (one assist).

Sophomore goalkeeper Greg Wellinghoff (1-0) made his first start between the pipes for SU and earned his first collegiate victory and shutout. Randolph-Macon goalie Jason DePre recorded the loss as he allowed five goals and added six saves. The Yellow Jackets made two team saves in the loss.

Randolph-Macon (2-4) was held to only four shots and one corner kick by the stifling SU defense. The Sea Gulls took 11 corner kicks and 33 shots (15 on goal) in the win.

The maroon and gold also got goals from freshman Mike Napolitano (one goal, one assist), sophomore Greg Taylor (one goal) and a final strike in the 89th minute by sophomore Kenneth Price.

Salisbury hits the road in its next contest for its Capital Athletic Conference opener against Gallaudet University on Tuesday, September 18, at 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
