Salisbury
secures top seed in CAC tournament with 6-1 win
ARLINGTON, Va. – In
a Wednesday night rainstorm the Salisbury University men's soccer team was
victorious over Marymount (Va.) University, 6-1, at the Gunston Field before a
supportive crowd of 65 who braved the elements.
Salisbury (12-4-1, 7-1 CAC) needed this win to secure the top-seed in the
upcoming Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Sea Gulls will have the
opportunity to host throughout the tournament which begins Saturday, October 27.
SU will host No. 8 seed Hood College in the CAC quarterfinals at the SU Soccer
Complex. The game time for Saturday's game has not yet been determined.
The Sea Gulls scored the game's first goal in the 12th minute as senior
midfielder Zach Grubb scored off an assist from junior defender Ryan
Chacon. The Saints responded four minutes later with an unassisted goal from
Dylan Hide. The score remained the same for the rest of the first half as the
two teams went into the break knotted 1-1.
In the second half, the maroon and gold broke open the game with five unanswered
goals to win their third straight game. Junior Romaine Bruney and
freshman Joe Rubel scored back-to-back unassisted goals to start the new
half. Bruney was awarded with his second game-winning goal.
Chacon assisted freshman Dave Corrigan in the 76th minute to make the
score 4-1. A minute later Corrigan assisted sophomore Kyle Sterling on
his 14th goal of the season. Sterling was named CAC Athlete of the Week on
Monday. Sophomore defender Benjamin Reed capped the SU scoring with first goal
this season off an assist from fellow sophomore Greg Taylor.
SU outshot Marymount (Va.) 16-11 and the Gulls took seven corner kicks to the
Saints' one attempt. SU goalie Greg Wellinghoff (9-2) earned the win and
made six saves in the game. Marymount (Va.) goalie William Brahmstedt (three
saves) recorded the loss for the Saints.
