WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Salisbury University men’s soccer team recorded its
second 7-0 shutout in a three-day span as it opened up Capital Athletic
Conference play on the road Wednesday afternoon against Gallaudet University.
This is 28th consecutive time in school history that SU has defeated Gallaudet.
The Sea Gulls have never lost to the Bison.
Salisbury (4-2-1, 1-0 CAC) wasted no time as junior Nick Malone started
the scoring onslaught in the ninth minute with his second goal of the year
assisted by freshman Joe Rubel. This was Malone’s second game-winning
goal of the season.
The Gulls led 3-0 at
the half and in the second half freshman Ben DeLisle started a goal
barrage 15 minutes into the new half. SU scored its final four goals in less
then a 10 minute span. Other SU goal scorers in that time frame were freshmen
Chris Finney, Mike Napolitano and Dave Corrigan. Finney netted
two goals to lead the maroon and gold with a game-high four points.
Gallaudet (0-6, 0-3 CAC) was credited with an own goal in the 25th minute which
put the Gulls up 2-0. On Salisbury’s six strikes the Sea Gulls recorded six
assists. Senior Andrew Henciak led the way as he dished out two assists
which give him three on the year. Sophomores Kyle Sterling, Justin
McGrath and Kevin Mongello all contributed one assist for the maroon
and gold.
Salisbury played all four goalies in the shutout win as sophomore starter
Greg Wellinghoff (2-0) earned his second consecutive win. Senior Matt
Blue, sophomore Josh Scotton and freshman Brandon Mumby all
got in between the pipes for SU in the victory.
Bison goalie David Owens recorded the loss as he stopped 12 Sea Gull shots.
Salisbury once again outshot its opponent this time by a margin of 32-0. The
Gulls also attempted 20 corner kicks compared to zero for Gallaudet.
Salisbury will hit the road again on Sunday, September 23, as it travels to New
York to meet up with the University of Rochester. SU won the first-ever meeting
against UR last season, 1-0.
