to 16-0 all-time against Goucher
SALISBURY, Md. -
The Salisbury University men’s soccer team defeated former Capital Athletic
Conference foe Goucher College 6-0 Wednesday afternoon before a crowd of 130 at
the SU Soccer Complex. With the victory the Sea Gulls are now 16-0 all-time
against the Gophers dating back to 1993.
Salisbury (5-3-1, 1-0 CAC) saw six different players score goals, three in each
half. Sophomore Kyle Sterling paced the Gulls as he finished the game
with four points (one goal, two assists) to add to his team-high 13 points on
the year. Junior Nick Malone put the Sea Gulls up early in the first half
off a Sterling assist to net his team-high third game-winning goal. Sophomore
Greg Taylor followed with the second strike of the game which was a point
blank blast setup by a slick double assist form junior Ryan Chacon (two
assists) and freshman Chris Finney. SU ended the first half with a late
goal when sophomore Kevin Mongello scored his first goal of the season
off an assist from sophomore Chas Gray.
The maroon and gold turned in three second half goals from Sterling, sophomore
Alex Hargrove and freshman Dave Corrigan.
Sophomore Greg Wellinghoff moved his record to 3-1 with the win and was a
big part in Salisbury’s sixth shutout of the year as he saved three shots.
Senior Matt Blue also added 23 scoreless minutes in between the pipes for
SU.
Goucher (3-6) suffered its sixth loss in its last seven games as the Gophers
have been outscored 22-9 during that stretch. Sophomore goalkeeper Justin
Holbrook took the loss in goal as he saved one shot. Freshman Josh Rosenfield
came off the bench to stop six Sea Gull shots and only gave up two goals in the
final 36 minutes.
Salisbury will gear up for its next match at No. 4 York (Pa.) College (9-0, 2-0
CAC) on Saturday, September 29. The Spartans will put their streak of 49
consecutive games with out a defeat on the line against the Sea Gulls. Last
season, SU finished 0-2 against YCP as they lost 2-1 in overtime during the
regular-season and 2-0 in the CAC semifinals.
