Salisbury,
Md - Defending national champion and #1 ranked Salisbury earned its ticket for
next month’s NCAA Championship Tournament with a 21-4 win over St. Mary’s in
the Capital Athletic Conference’s Championship Game Saturday.
Senior
attackmen Corey O’Neil (6g-1a), pictured at right, and Andy Arnold (4g-1a) combined
for 10 goals to lead the Sea Gulls (15-0) to their 10th straight conference
championship. Salisbury also claims the CAC’s automatic bid for the NCAA
Tournament.
O’Neil and Arnold each scored once in the opening quarter as Salisbury jumped
to a 4-0 lead. The Gulls increased their advantage to 9-3 at halftime, helped by
a pair of goals by O’Neil to close the second quarter. Consecutive markers by O’Neil, Arnold and senior Scott
Simmons (2g-3a) over the first 4:27 of the third quarter pushed the lead to
12-3.
St.
Mary’s (11-6) stopped the run briefly with an extra-man goal by Pat Schmidt
at 7:00 of the third quarter, but Salisbury closed the period with two more
goals by O’Neil. Sophomore Dan
Boyer tallied three of SU’s seven fourth quarter goals. Justin Smith
also added two goals and one assist.
Salisbury
finished with a decided edge in most of the statistics, out-shooting the
Seahwaks 64-19 and controlling 23 of 29 face-offs. Senior all-American Andy
Murray (1g-1a) led the way by winning 16 of his 20 face-off attempts.
Three Salisbury goalies combined for eight saves, led by junior Dan Korpon
with five stops. Freshman goalie Rich Barr recorded 18 saves in 54
minutes for St. Mary’s. Schmidt led the Seahawk scoring with two goals.
Salisbury concludes its regular season at home next Saturday in a non-conference
showdown with #2 ranked Washington. The Sea Gulls will carry a 24-game winning
streak into that contest.
