Salisbury, Md - Number one ranked Salisbury jumped to a
10-0 first quarter lead en route to a 16-1 win over visiting Cabrini in the
second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Senior Josh Bergey (4g-2a), sophomore Chris Phillips (3g)
and sophomore Justin Smith (2g) each scored twice to fuel SU’s opening
run. The Sea Gulls (16-1 overall) advance to Wednesday’s national
quarterfinals and will host the winner of Sunday’s Lynchburg-Franklin &
Marshall game. Cabrini ends its season with a 13-4 mark. Salisbury,
which scored on 10 of its 22 shots in the opening period, pushed its margin to
11-0 in the opening seconds of the second quarter as Phillips added his third of
the game, assisted by face off specialist Andy Murray (1g-1a). Murray
enjoyed a near perfect day on face offs, winning 18 of his 19 attempts.
Salisbury controlled 19 of 21 draws overall. Cabrini
registered its only marker with 1:43 remaining in the second quarter as freshman
Matt Grosse scored unassisted. Murray answered that goal by winning the
ensuing face off and scoring unassisted just seven seconds later. Salisbury led
12-1 at halftime. Bergey
added his third and fourth goals of the game in the third quarter. The Gulls
closed out the game with two more tallies in the final period, including Mike
Ricucci’s second goal of the contest. Sophomore Joe Tamberrino
finished with a team-high three assists. Cabrini’s
junior goalie Antonio Masone finished with 18 saves. Salisbury starter Dan
Korpon recorded nine saves in 48 minutes. The Sea Gulls finished with a
50-18 advantage in total shots and 67-30 edge in ground balls. The Salisbury
defense registered its fourth game of the season in which it allowed one goal or
