A Look Back at "The
Streak"
June 6, 2006
SALSIBURY, MD – Over the course of four
seasons, the Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team etched their name among
the nation’s elite, compiling a NCAA lacrosse record, 69-game win streak. "The
Streak," as it often times was referred to, doesn’t only sit atop the lacrosse
record books, it stands tall among some of the greatest dynasties the NCAA has
ever seen.
The 69-game winning
streak ranks fifth all-time in any division, any sport. The fourth longest
streak belongs to the University of Connecticut women’s basketball team. UConn
ripped off 70 consecutive victories; starting March 30, 2001 and ending March
11, 2003. With 81 straight wins, the Washington-St. Louis women’s basketball
team sits in third place. Their streak went from February 20, 1998 to January
12, 2001.
The top two streaks are
owned by some of the greatest teams ever assembled. UCLA men’s basketball won
88 successive games from January 30, 1971 through January 17, 1974 while the
number one ranked streak stretched over a five year period from October 12, 1990
to September 30, 1994. The University of North Carolina women’s soccer team won
an unprecedented 92 games in a row.
The Sea Gull’s streak
began on April 17, 2003, as the Gull’s avenged a 13-12 loss to Lynchburg by
defeating Mary Washington 17-5. "The Streak" came to an end on May 28, 2006 in
the National Title game, as the Gulls dropped an overtime thriller to Cortland
State, 13-12.
Over the four seasons
of "The Streak," the Salisbury resume has built impressive numbers. The Sea
Gulls have seen 33 All-Americans (18 first team, five second team, one third
team, and nine honorable mention), including seven in 2003, eight in both 2005
and 2006, and ten in 2004. Former stand out player Jeff Bigas, who
played from 2002-2005, was a three-time first team All-American, while his
teammate for all four years at Salisbury, Sean White
(pictured above), was a two-time first team
selection and one time second team player. Andy Murray and Eric
Martin, who played from 2001-2004, were honored as a first team All-American
in both the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
The individual
accolades are remarkable, but the team awards are just as astonishing. The 2003
team ranked No. 1 in Scoring Offense (17.85), No. 7 in Scoring Defense (6.35),
and No. 1 in Scoring Margin (11.5). First team All-American Josh Bergey
(pictured below) ranked third in the country in
points per game (6.0), sixth in goals per game (3.6) and 14th in
assists per game (2.4). The ’03 Sea Gulls won their fourth overall National
Title by defeating the Panthers of Middlebury College 14-13 in overtime.
The 2004 team put up
numbers that are even more amazing than the ’03 team. The ’04 National
Champions ranked No. 1 in Scoring Offense (18.2), Scoring Defense (6.05), and
Scoring Margin (12.15). Cory O’Neil, a first team All-American, ranked
20th in the nation in points per game (4.35) and fourth in goals per
game (3.65), while honorable mention All-American Dan Korpon ranked
number one in goals-against average (5.86). The Sea Gulls repeated as Champions
with a 13-9 win over Nazareth College. The back to back titles were only the
second time in school history that had happened (the other coming 1994 and
1995).
As
players graduated, the team continued to reload. The 2005 Sea Gulls continued
the trend of dominance, ranking No. 1 in Scoring Offense (17.05) and Scoring
Margin (9.75), and No. 13 in Scoring Defense (7.3). Dan Boyer, a second
team All-American selection, ranked ninth in the land in goals per game (3.45),
whereas Korpon, the National Title game MVP and first team All-American, ranked
third in goals against average (6.77) and 19th in save percentage
(62.5%). The Sea Gulls ended the ’05 campaign with a 49 game win streak and a
third straight National Title. The Gulls held off Middlebury 11-10 to claim the
school’s sixth National Championship.
The 2006 Salisbury team
ranked No. 2 in Scoring Offense (15.6), No. 9 in Scoring Defense (6.4), and No.
1 in Scoring Margin (9.2). Ranking seventh in the nation in goals per game
(3.3) was Boyer, a first team All-American selection. Max Zarchin, an
honorable mention All-American, ranked eighth in goals-against average (6.49).
Through the years of
"The Streak," Salisbury had two undefeated and three 20-win seasons, three
consecutive National Titles, and four Capital Athletic Conference
Championships. The Gulls also defeated 28 ranked teams, highlighted by 11 wins
over a team ranked in the top five, 22 wins over a top ten team, and six wins
over a top 20 team. The record breaking streak had Salisbury scored at least 20
goals in 20 of the contests, while holding teams to three or fewer goals in 11
games. Salisbury averaged 17.07 goals a game, accumulating 1178 goals, and held
opponents to a mere 6.62 goals a game (457 total goals).
The Sea Gulls will
begin the 2007 season in uncharted territory, with a one game losing streak.
Despite losing in the ’06 National Championship, the Gulls will once again
restock and chase another title in ‘07. Salisbury will return four All-Americans
(Zarchin, Chase Caruso, Chris Heier, and Luis Gonzalez), and a
core of young talent that will once again put the Sea Gulls back on top. After
all, the last time Salisbury lost they ran off 69 straight wins.

Sea Gulls Honored
With Eight All Americans
May 30, 2006
SALSIBURY, MD – The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association announced
the 2006 All American team Sunday afternoon during the National Championship
game naming eight Sea Gulls to the coveted team. Dan Boyer (Millersville,
MD/Mt. St. Joseph’s), Chris Heier (Fallston, MD/Fallston), Chase Caruso
(Huntington, NY/Huntington), and Mike Hurley (Cambridge, MD/Cambridge-SD)
were all named to the first team.
Boyer, a second team All American selection a year ago, led
the Sea Gull offense this year in points (74) and goals (67) and was also ranked
in the top ten in the nation in goals per game. Heier, a junior and an
honorable mention All American last season, was Salisbury’s number one defensive
player, causing 22 turnovers and gathering 33 groundballs on the year.
Caruso and Hurley are both making their first appearance on
the team. Hurley was third on the team in points (63) and goals (43), while
Caruso’s impact as a long stick midfielder was mainly seen on the defensive side
of the field. Caruso led all defensive players with 42 groundballs and led the
team with 33 caused turnovers.
In addition to the four first teams, senior Ryan Rohde
(Glenmoore, PA/Malvern Prep) was named to the third team. Rohde was one of
the top offensive threats for the Sea Gulls all year long finishing second on
the team in points and goals, tallying 73 and netting 49 respectively. Rohde’s
42% shooting percentage also ranked him sixth on the team.
Junior goalie Max Zarchin (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s),
senior midfielder Jimmy Creighton (Huntington, NY/Huntington), and junior
midfielder Luis Gonzalez (Crofton, MD/Arundel) were all honored by the
USILA as honorable mention All Americans. Zarchin finished the year with a 56.6
save percentage giving up only 6.82 goals a game. Creighton was solid all year
long, balancing his scoring with 25 goals and 29 assists to finish fifth on the
team in points with 54. Gonzalez was mainly used for defenisive purposes, but
had his offensive coming out party in the national championship game scoring
three consecutive goals for the Gulls.
Creighton and Hurley were not only named as All American’s
for the play on the field, but they were also honored as Academic All Americans.
The Sea Gulls finished this season 20-1, earned their 12th
consecutive Capital Athletic Conference crown, had their third straight
undefeated regular season, and made a trip to their fourth straight National
Championship game.

Red Dragons Outlast Sea
Gulls in OT, 13-12, Capture D3 Championship
May 28, 2006
SALISBURY-CORTLAND STATE BOXSCORE
PHILADELPHIA, PA- For the first time since
April 10, 2003, the Sea Gulls lost a men’s lacrosse game. With 69 straight wins
in-between, Salisbury has tasted its share of success, including three straight
national titles. But, in front of a crowd of more than 20,000, Cortland defeated
the favored Sea Gulls on an overtime goal with 2.2 seconds remaining to capture
the 2006 National Championship.
The contest was close
throughout as the teams combined for 11 ties and four lead changes with
Salisbury holding the only two-goal lead at 6-4 in the second quarter. The
opening goal belonged to Cortland’s Ryan Simensky with a Mike Felice assist.
Felice would tally three goals and another assists in the game, including the
overtime game winner, to be named the Player of the Game. The Salisbury answer
would come at 10:10 in the first on a Matt Dasinger (Reisterstown,
MD/Franklin) goal, his 33rd of the season. The teams would
exchange scores with Salisbury tallies from Ryan Rohde (Glenmoore, PA/Malvern
Prep) and another by Dasinger to finish the first tied, 3-3. Jimmy
Creighton (Huntington, NY/Huntington) assisted on two first period goals and
added two goals of his own later in the game for a team-high four points. While
the score was even after one, Salisbury suffered a big loss as one of its best
scoring threats was injured early and did not return.
The second quarter went
much like the first with the momentum seesawing back and forth. Kylor Berkman
(Salisbury, MD/Parkside) dished out three assists on two Creighton and one
Mike Edwards (Baltimore, MD/Calvert Hall) goal to lead the offensive
charge. Dan Boyer (Millersville, MD/Mt. Saint Joseph’s) would net his
only goal of the game at the 1:13 mark to give the Gulls a 7-6 lead heading into
halftime.
In the third, the Red
Dragons grabbed the momentum with the opening goal on a man-up opportunity.
Cortland dominated face-offs in the third to control time of possession, winning
eight out of ten. Two players emerged in the third as difference makers for
their respective squads. For Cortland, Ryan Heath scored three times including
his 29th of the season with 37 seconds left in the quarter to tie the
game at 11-11. For Salisbury, Luis Gonzalez (Crofton, MD/Arundel) came up
large, burying three goals of his own in the third. Gonzalez entered the game
with only four goals for the year, but his offense, along with another Rohde
score, kept the Gulls close.
After nine combined
goals in the third, the fourth quarter was a defensive battle. Eric Bishop
(Media, PA/Penncrest) scored the go-ahead goal at 7:44, and the Salisbury
defense stepped up, causing six turnovers in the fourth alone. However, a
defensive miscommunication led to a goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation
and tied the contest at 12 to send the game into overtime.
Each team missed a few
chances in overtime as Dasinger whistled one shot wide and another that hit the
post behind Cortland goalie Ben Gaebel who made two key saves in the extra
period. Gaebel played a strong game in net as he stopped 18 Sea Gull shots.
Max Zarchin (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s) made six saves for Salisbury. But the
stage was set after the Dasinger post with 26 seconds remaining when Cortland
gained control and sped the length of the field. With 2.2 seconds left, Felice
notched the championship goal and started the Red Dragon celebration.
Cortland advanced to
the title game on an overtime goal and punctuated its season with another
dramatic finish. The Sea Gulls amazing winning streak ends at 69 games and three
national titles. Their gallant effort marked the third time as national
runner-up in nine finals appearances.

add a goal for Roanoke to pull the Maroons back within three, 8-5, before the
Sea Gulls pulled out in front by four once again with three straight goals.
Hurley scored his fourth goal at the 8:08 mark, then Boyer with his third of the
game at the 4:28 mark with Berkman on the assist. Edwards would add a goal of
his own at the 3:49 mark, taking a pass from Creighton.
The Sea Gulls appeared to be in control of the game until
the Maroons outscored Salisbury, scoring three goals in the final minute of play
in the third. Pattison scored his second goal of the game at the 1:03 mark with
Carlson picking up the assist, then Zack Thomas (Bel Air, MD/St. Paul’s) would
pull the Maroons within four, 11-7, with a score with forty-four seconds
remaining. Sophomore attackman Greg Baggan (Lutherville, MD/Boy’s Latin)
would add a goal with ten seconds remaining, with Edwards picking up the assist,
but Thomas scored again for Roanoke with two seconds remaining to make it a four
goal game again, 12-8.
The Maroons used the momentum of that last-second goal in
the third to score four goals in the fourth to send the game into overtime.
Junior attackman Brendan Moore (Columbia, MD/Mt. Hebron) would score an
unassisted goal with the man advantage at the 9:58 mark. Thomas then scored his
third goal of the game of the unassisted variety at the 4:35 mark, and then
Keating would score two goals, one at the 1:59 mark with the assist to Pattison,
and one with fifteen seconds remaining with the assist to Moore to send the game
into overtime.
In the overtime, the Sea Gulls held off an early Roanoke
rally and then recovered the ball with at the two minute mark. After a Salisbury
timeout, the Sea Gulls took possession and Creighton found an odd-man rush at
the right side of the goal to score the game-winner.
Zarchin was tough in net for Salisbury, making several key
saves late for the Sea Gulls. He stopped twelve of twenty-four shots on goal to
preserve the victory and earn his nineteenth win of the season. Senior goalie
Matt Madalon (Darien, CT/Darien) stopped fifteen of twenty-eight shots on net to
take the loss, dropping his record to 15-3 on the season.

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA

Nine Sea Gulls Named to all-CAC
Men's Lacrosse Squads
May 4, 2006
2006
ALL-CAC MEN'S LACROSSE TEAMS
SALISBURY, MD - The Capital Athletic
Conference Champions and #1 ranked Sea Gulls were well represented on the All-CAC
Men’s Lacrosse team released on Wednesday. Salisbury earned nine spots on the
team with four first team selections and five second team selections.
Head Coach Jim Berkman
was named CAC Coach of the Year as his Sea Gulls claimed their 12th
consecutive conference title. Berkman’s career record at Salisbury is 273-29
including a perfect mark versus CAC opponents. Under Berkman, Salisbury has won
six National Championships. Chase Caruso (Huntington, NY/Huntington)
was named Player of the Year for his exceptional play as defensive
midfielder. Caruso is third on the team in ground balls, behind only the Sea
Gull face-off specialists. Despite being a long-stick midfielder, Caruso has two
goals and two assists, but it’s his defensive impact that is so vital to

game, as the Sea Gulls and Panthers were knotted at five.
Nothing came easy for
Salisbury in the second half either. The Sea Gulls only managed two goals
in each of the last two quarters, but it was enough to hang on, and hold off the
Saints.
Senior Jimmy
Creighton (Huntington, NY/Huntington) scored two goals for the Gulls while
freshman Kylor Berkman (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) added one gold and one
assist. Juniors Matt Dassinger (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) and
Eric Bishop (Media, PA/Penncrest) totaled three points on the afternoon,
each scoring a goal, and Bishop adding an assist.
Salisbury’s defense was
stout when they were a man down; the defense helped goalie Max Zarchin
(Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s), 10 saves, and allowed only one goal on five man
down opportunities.
The Sea Gulls return
home from their Florida trip to play host to their Capital Athletic Conference
foe, the Spartans of York College (PA) on Tuesday, March 28th.
The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.

The Battling Bishops struck first, scoring

The Sea Gulls came out

convert on five consecutive clear opportunities. Despite the slow start,
Salisbury was able to find the back of the net twice in the final 39 seconds,
highlighted by Matt Dasinger (Reistertown, MD/Franklin) forced turnover
and unassisted goal with seven seconds remaining in the quarter.

Boyer, Rohde Lead
Men's Lacrosse Rout of Marymount, 29-0
February 21, 2006
SALISBURY-MARYMOUNT BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, Md. - In Salisbury’s
51 game winning streak, the Men’s Lacrosse team has shutout an opponent only
twice, including today’s 29-0 rout of Marymount. The Sea Gulls have won three
National Championships in this same span. So, the only thing more elusive than
the title is a shutout victory. The last time Salisbury pulled off the extremely
rare feat was against Catholic in 2003 to start the season. That shutout of
Catholic was not only the last time the Sea Gulls have done that, but it was
also their first win in their current win streak.
Dan Boyer (Millersville, MD/Mt. St.
Joseph’s) and Ryan Rohde (Glenmoore, PA/Malvern Prep) each scored a
game-high six goals, with Rohde tallying one more assist than Boyer to
finish with an extraordinary nine point game. Mike Hurley (Cambridge,
MD/Cambridge-SD) was not far behind the leaders as he posted five goals and
two assists of his own. Five other Sea Gulls finished with three or more points
including Eric Bishop (Media, PA/Penncrest), Kylor Berkman (Salisbury,
MD/Parkside), Jimmy Creighton (Huntington, NY/Huntington), Matt
Dasinger (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin), and Brett Yoder (Parkton,
MD/Hereford).
Perhaps the most dominate stat of the game
was face-offs. Ryan DeRose (Oswego, NY/Oswego) won 14-15 and Ryan
Brown (Portland, ME/Bridgton Academy) secured 9-12. Salisbury’s ability to
win the draws gave them many more possessions than Marymount. The Saints were
forced to play defense for much of the game.
On defense, Chase Caruso (Huntington,
NY/Huntington) and Eric Fleegle (Greensboro, MD/St. Peter & Paul)
were up to the task when Marymount entered the offensive zone. Caruso had a
team-high four takeaways, and goalkeeper Fleegle stopped the Saints best chance
on a point-blank shot in the third quarter.
Alex Hammer stopped eight Salisbury shots to
help the Saints, but the excellent offensive setups by the Sea Gulls often left
them in front of the goal, uncontested.
Salisbury University returns to action with
a CAC match-up at Catholic on Friday, February 24th. The Sea Gulls
will be going for their 52nd straight victory when they visit the
Cardinals.

Men's LAX Dominates Va.
Wesleyan in Season Opener, 16-4
February 18, 2006
SALISBURY-VA. WESLEYAN BOXSCORE
SALISBURY, MD - The Salisbury University
men’s lacrosse team opened up the 2006 season with a convincing 16-4 win over
the visiting Virginia Wesleyan College Marlins Saturday afternoon from Sea Gull
Stadium. Senior attack-man Dan Boyer (Millersville, MD/Mt. St. Joseph’s)
paced the Gulls with his game high five goals.
Salisbury came out of the gate swinging,
building up an early 5-0 lead just partway through the first quarter. The first
half was dominated by the Sea Gulls who held a 27-11 shot advantage over the
visiting Marlins through two-quarters. Despite being held to only two goals in
the second quarter, Salisbury still went into half time with an 8-3 lead.
The second half was much like the first as
Salisbury just continued to steamroll the Marlins. The third quarter featured
five different Gulls scoring including senior Ryan Rohde (Glenmoore,
PA/Malvern Prep) scoring his first of his two goals. The SU defense was just
as impressive as the offense holding VWC to only one shot in the third frame.
Junior goaltender Max Zarchin (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s) finished with a
60% save percentage stopping six of the 10 shots on goal he saw.
Eric Bishop (Media, PA/Penncrest)
dished out a game high three assists for the Gulls while freshman Kylor
Berkman (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) added two of his own. Jimmy Creighton
(Huntington, NY/Huntington) and Matt Dasinger (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin)
both scored a goal and had a combined total of three assists between them.
Dan Hofmeister was a bright spot for
the Marlins as he scored and added an assist of his own to Jordan Kenney.
Salisbury won on over 70% of their face-offs
(15-21), as Ryan Brown (Portland, ME/Bridgton Academy) was successful on
eight of nine attempts. The Gulls also held a 27 shot advantage over the Marlins
(51-24).
With the win, Salisbury
now moves its win streak to 50 consecutive games. The Sea Gulls will next play
host on Tuesday, February 21st as they entertain the Marymount
University Saints.

Men's LAX Opens Season
No. 1, Looks for Fourth Straight Title
February 20, 2006
MLAX 2006 ROSTER |
MLAX 2006 SCHEDULE |
2005 FINAL STATISTICS
SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University Men’s Lacrosse
begins their march toward another NCAA Division III National Title this weekend.
SU opens the regular season at home against Virginia Wesleyan looking to extend
its winning streak to an even 50 games.
This is the backdrop for the premiere men’s lacrosse
program in Division III. The Sea Gulls head into 2006 having won three straight
National Championships, 49 consecutive games and boasting a #1 preseason ranking
in the Inside Lacrosse poll, receiving 85 of a possible 89 first place
votes. But how does this team stack up against those of the past three seasons?
After all, the Sea Gulls did lose six senior All-Americans.
To
make up for the loss, the answer is simple for Head Coach Jim Berkman. Berkman,
entering his 18th year at Salisbury with a 256-29 all-time record,
constantly stresses improvement. While this may not be the most purely talented
team, Berkman states, “This might be the fittest team I have had; they have
spent lots of weight room time.”
The
hard off-season work speaks of the character of this 2006 team. Dan Boyer
(Millersville, MD/Mt. St. Joseph’s) returns at attack from his 69 goal
campaign in 2005. Another senior attack, Ryan Rohde (Glenmoore, PA/Malvern
Prep) finished with 16 goals 12 assists a year ago, and he should
make an even bigger offensive impact this year. Eric Bishop (Media,
PA/Penncrest)
adds another scoring threat to the Gulls potent attack. Last season, Bishop came
on strong with 27 goals and 10 assists, and Berkman warns, “Eric Bishop is much
better this year.”
The
2006 captains are all midfielders with Joe Patalak (Chalfont, PA/C.B.
West) taking over as long stick middie. Mike Edwards (Baltimore,
MD/Calvert Hall), 34 points as a sophomore, is among Jimmy Creighton
(Huntington, NY/Huntington) and Chris Sgritta (Darien, CT/Darien)
rounding out the solid group of midfielders.
Newcomers to the elite Salisbury program may have a big impact in the upcoming
season. Greg Baggan (Lutherville, MD/Boy’s Latin), a transfer from Ohio
St., and Matt White (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s), a transfer from Loyola,
will add to an already potent attack. The Sea Gulls also welcome a couple
freshmen that might pay immediate dividends. Kylor Berkman (Salisbury,
MD/Parkside), the coach’s son, was a two-time High School All-American at
Parkside, and Sam Love (Berwyn Heights, MD/Dematha) is a talented
defender from Dematha High.
Success does not come easy for the Sea Gulls. The coaching staff works hard to
recruit the best and the players hunger to constantly improve themselves. This
is why, after losing six All-Americans, Salisbury Men’s Lacrosse is still the
team to beat in 2006.
