Annual Men's Lacrosse Game Between Salisbury University and Washington College
Honors Longtime Coach and Educator

Eastern Shore rivals Salisbury University and Washington College, competitors on the lacrosse field since 1974, added a new twist to the rivalry in 2004 with the creation of the Charles B. Clark Cup, to be awarded to the winner of the annual regular season men’s lacrosse game between the teams.  The award honors Dr. Charles B. Clark (1913-2003), a long-time educator who also served as head coach at both schools during his tenure.

Salisbury claimed the inaugural Cup with a 21-7 win over the Shoremen on May 1, 2004. Salisbury captured the Clark cup again in 2005, besting the Shoremen by a score of 11-10.

“Dr. Clark was devoted to the game of lacrosse and contributed greatly to the lacrosse heritage at both schools,” said Dr. Michael Vienna, Salisbury’s director of athletics. “More than just winning and losing, he was also fully committed to the ideals of teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play. We’re proud to honor his memory by making this award a meaningful part of the annual game between the teams.”

“This cup is a wonderful tribute to Dr. Clark and all that he did for Washington College and Salisbury University,” commented Washington College athletic director, Dr. Bryan Matthews. “Charley touched many lives, and is loved and respected by so many from both institutions. We are pleased and proud to be a part of the new tradition of the Charles B. Clark Cup.”

Clark’s connection to the two schools began at Washington College, where he was an All-Maryland midfielder and face-off man in 1933 and 1934. Clark returned to Washington in 1946 to become chairman of the department of history and political science.  Two years later, he became head coach of the school’s resurrected men’s lacrosse team, which had been inactive for 14 years.

Clark quickly led Washington to prominence in the collegiate lacrosse world, compiling a 73-33 record from 1948 to 1956.  His 1954 team was crowned Co-National Champion of the Laurie Cox Division of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association.  During his tenure, Washington College lacrosse players earned All-America honors 22 times.

Clark served as the head coach at Salisbury from 1979 to 1982, amassing a 43-19 record during his four seasons. He led the Sea Gulls to four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the national quarterfinal round in 1979 and the national semifinal round in each of his last three seasons.

Clark led the Sea Gulls to their highest national rankings at the time, peaking at #3 in 1981 and #4 in 1982, while producing 12 national All-Americans during his four seasons. His 1981 squad set school records for wins and goals during a 14-3 season.  A noted historian, Clark also served as chair of Salisbury’s history and political science department.

Clark is a member of both the Washington College Hall of Fame as well as the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He served several terms on the executive board of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association during his career, including stints as both vice-president and president of the organization.

The following inscription is on the Cup:

CHARLES B. CLARK CUP
Awarded annually to the regular season winner of the Salisbury-Washington men’s lacrosse game in memory of Coach Charles B. Clark, who served with distinction at both schools. Clark was a student-athlete, educator and men’s lacrosse coach at Washington College, and later, an educator and men’s lacrosse coach at Salisbury University. A member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, Coach Clark led both institutions to national lacrosse prominence while demonstrating and teaching the highest ideals of sportsmanship, teamwork and competitive athletic spirit.
