Catholic ends Salisbury’s season for the
fourth straight year
WASHINGTON, D.C. –
For a fourth consecutive season Catholic University has put an end to Salisbury
University men’s basketball season. The Cardinals defeated the Gulls 79-59 in
the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament before 813 in
Washington, D.C. Last season Catholic ended Salisbury’s post season run in the
CAC championship game, 79-70.
The game was tightly contested in the first half with four ties and seven lead
changes. Catholic (20-5) pulled away with a run in the final minutes of the
first half that sent Salisbury into halftime down 35-25.
Salisbury (12-14) cut a 14-point second half lead to seven with a Devin Jones
jumper with 14 minutes left in regulation. The Cardinals answered immediately
with two made free throws by senior Patrick Dwyer (18 points, 11 rebounds) to
spark a 20-9 run that powered Catholic to a 20-point victory.
Seniors Ray Williams and Segun Odumeru once again led the way for
Salisbury as they scored 21 and 15 points, respectively, despite a rough
shooting night from the field as they combined to go 12-of-39 (30 percent).
Catholic saw two other players join Dwyer with double-doubles as senior Scott
Fumai scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Senior Mike
Wasilenko scored 10 points and dished out a game-high 12 assists.
Second-seed Catholic advances to the semifinals where they will host six-seed
Mary Washington on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
