The Sea Gulls started slow
against St. Peter’s, but took control in the second quarter on the

Travis Peters (La Plata, MD/McDonough) and a receiving touchdown from
Peters to wide receiver
Joseph Early (New Market, MD/Linganore). Senior
Leroy Satchell (Baltimore, MD/Waynesboro) rushed for 188 yards on 25
carriers and three touchdowns on the afternoon.
Salisbury continues to

out of the top spot by Linfield (49.0 points a game).
The Sea Gulls will travel to Dover, DE Saturday
to take on conference opponent Wesley at 1:00 p.m. The team will host
Widener University on November 5, 2005 at Sea Gull Field at 1:00 p.m. The
team will then travel to Towson University to take on Frostburg State in
the annual Regents Cup game.
Satchell Named Conference Offensive Player of the Week
October 26, 2005
SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury running back

has earned the recognition for the second straight week.
Satchell
rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns against the Peacock defense to
lead the Sea Gulls to a 41-16 victory. In the previous week, Satchell
rushed for 189 yards and five touchdowns in Salisbury’s 66-20 victory over
Buffalo State. The five touchdowns against the Bengals tied a conference
record.
Three other Sea Gulls
received honorable mentions. Senior defensive back Byron Westbrook (Ft.
Washington, MD/Dematha)
was recognized for his two interception performance. Sophomore punter

No. 17 Salisbury Football Surges Past St. Peter's, 41-16
October 22, 2005
SALISBURY-ST. PETER'S STATISTICS
SALISBURY, Md. - The No. 17
Salisbury University football team matched up against a Division
I-AA college for the first time in eleven years
Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium, as the Sea Gulls knocked off visiting St. Peter’s College (NJ), 41-16.
It was the first victoSALISBURY, Md. - The No. 17 Salisbury University
football team matched up against a Division I-AA college for the first
time in eleven years Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium, as the Sea Gulls
knocked off visiting St. Peter’s College (NJ), 41-16. It was the first
victory over a Division I-AA school since Salisbury knocked off Davidson,
14-13, in 1989. The victory improved the Sea Gulls to 6-1 on the season
and 10-16 all-time versus Division I-AA opponents.
Despite the loss of all-conference quarterback
Dustin
Johnson (Delmar, MD/Delmar), the Salisbury offense has been clicking in
recent weeks. The team had routed its last two opponents by a combined
score of 143-33. The team came into the game ranked No. 1 in rushing
offense, averaging 394.7 yards per game, and second in scoring offense at
49.5 points per game. On Saturday, the team was led again by senior
Leroy Satchell (Baltimore, MD/Waynesboro), who contributed 188 yards on the
ground and three scores.
The visiting Peacocks put the pressure on the Sea
Gulls early, as they scored on the first possession of the game. Following
a first down run by Sean Mayers, the Sea Gulls halted the drive,
highlighted by a sack of quarterback Scott Bonnono by junior Billy
Leinemann (Ocean City, MD/Stephen Decatur) that went for 16 yards on
second down. The drive was kept alive, however, by a penalty for roughing
the kicker on the Sea Gulls. The Peacocks, given new life, scored as
Bonnono found wide receiver Jaleel Kindell for a 72 yard strike for the
touchdown, giving St. Peter’s the early 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing drive, the Sea Gulls coughed up the
ball at the Peacock’s 47 yard line. The drive was aided again by a
penalty, as a personal foul call on the Sea Gulls placed St. Peter’s on
the Salisbury 31. The Peacocks drove into field goal range, but was halted
by the Salisbury defense as senior defensive back Byron Westbrook (Ft.
Washington, MD/DeMatha) intercepted the Bonnono pass at the 27 yard line.
St. Peter’s again forced a Salisbury turnover on the
ensuing drive, as senior Teddy Savage (Owings Mills, MD/Poly) fumbled the
ball at the St. Peter’s 26. The defense, however, forced the Peacocks to
punt following three plays.
In the second quarter, the Peacocks again threatened
to score another touchdown until Bonnono was picked off again by
Westbrook, this time in the end zone. It was Westbrook’s third
interception of the season. In the previous week against Buffalo State,
Westbrook broke the school record for most interception return yards,
previously held by his head coach Sherman Wood (1980-1983), with a 32 yard
interception return. He now has 11 career interceptions and 148 career
interception return yards.
Following this turnover, the Salisbury offense came
alive. The Sea Gulls marched down the field and scored as quarterback
Travis Peters (La Plata, MD/McDonough) found wide receiver Joseph Early
(New Market, MD/Linganore) for a 33 yard touchdown reception to tie the
score at seven.
On the next St. Peter’s possession, the Salisbury
defense then forced another turnover as a Sean Mayers fumble was recovered
at the St. Peter’s 33 by senior Jacquis McCray (Silver Spring,
MD/Kennedy). The Salisbury offense then punched in the ball, as Peters
used the option around the right end to run into the end zone standing up
to give the Sea Gulls the lead, 14-7.
The Sea Gulls would halt the Peacocks on three plays,
and then blocked a punt on special teams. Peters again scored on an option
end around for nine yards to extend the Sea Gull lead to 21-7. After
forcing St. Peter’s to turn the ball over on downs, Salisbury completed a
seven play, 65 yard drive that ended with one of Satchell’s three rushing
touchdowns on the day. Boland would miss the extra point, as Salisbury
would lead 27-7 at halftime.
As the third quarter began, St. Peter’s would mount a
brief rally to get back into the game. After a Salisbury six play, 53 yard
drive ended in a missed field goal by Brock Boland, the Peacocks would
cash in with three points, as Vincent Privitelli connected from 26 yards
out to make the score 27-10. Salisbury would attempt to get the ball back
on the kickoff, but the attempt was muffed by Anthony Johnson (Temple
Hills, MD/McNamara) and the Peacocks recovered the ball. The St. Peter’s
drive would end in a touchdown for the Peacocks, as running back Shaun Puluse rushed it in from three yards out on the score. The ensuing extra
point was blocked, as the score stood at 27-16.
Salisbury began the fourth quarter with a score, as
Satchell ran in from three yards out for his second touchdown on the
afternoon to extend the lead to 34-16, completing a nine play, 51 yard
drive. The Sea Gulls then limited the Peacocks to a three and out. On the
ensuing drive, Peters and Satchell marched the Sea Gulls down the field.
Satchell would score his third touchdown on the day, behind tackles
Spencer Henderson (Bethesda, MD/Georgetown Prep.) and Kristos Miliotis
(Odenton, MD/Arundel) to make the final score, 41-16.
Along with Satchell’s rushing heroics, Peters
contributed 68 yards on the ground in 11 attempts, followed by Francis
Bryant (Bryans Road, MD/Lackey) with 43 yards on four attempts, and Antwoine Jackson (Waldorf, MD/Westlake) with 41 yards on seven attempts.
Peters led the Sea Gull passing attack with 75 yards on 5-of-7 attempts. Joseph Early had 61 yards receiving on three receptions. The
team as a whole had 482 yards of total offense, including 407 yards on the
ground.
The Peacocks were led on the ground by Sean Mayers,
who had 27 net yards rushing on six attempts. Quaterback Scott Bonnono
passed for 304 yards and a touchdown on 28 of 46 passing attempts. The
team had two players reach 100 yards receiving, as Jaleel Kindell had 114
yards on nine receptions and a touchdown and John Bond had 126 yards on
five receptions. The Peacocks finished with 354 total yards, including 304
in the air.
Defensively, the Sea Gulls were led by Leinemann, who
had 11 total tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery, followed by Justin
Ritter (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) with seven tackles and a sack, and senior
captain Andrew Deming (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) with six tackles and a
sack for a 15 yard loss.
St. Peter’s John Hartenfels contributed 12 total
tackles, 10 unassisted. Terrance Wright followed with nine. The Peacocks
recorded four sacks, one apiece by Will Mitchell, Sydney Murray, Jahma
Reynolds, and John Robinson.
The Sea Gulls return to action next weekend, as they
travel to Dover, DE for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against ACFC conference
opponent Wesley College. The Wolverines, who came into the game ranked No.
25 in the Division III football, are coming off a shocking 47-0 loss to
Brockport St in New York.

Satchell Scores Five Touchdowns in 66-20 Win over Buffalo State
October 15, 2005
SALISBURY-BUFFALO STATE STATISTICS
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury
University football team showed a little rust from its week off early on,
but then got its offense in overdrive in the second half as the
No.17-ranked Sea Gulls blew past Atlantic Central Football Conference foe
Buffalo State, 66-20, at Sea Gull Stadium Saturday.
Salisbury senior running
back Leroy Satchell (Baltimore, Md./Waynesboro) carried the ball 16 times
for 189 yards (11.5 avg.) and came within one touchdown of the SU school
record as he crossed the goal line five times. Satchell now has 739 yards
rushing on the year and has scored 13 touchdown. The Sea Gull offense also
came close to breaking a school mark, finishing the day with 627 total
yards. The school mark was set in 1988 against Frostburg State when the
Gulls recorded 633 yards of offense.
The turning point of the
contest came late in the second quarter as Salisbury (5-1, 3-0 ACFC) led
21-14 and was trying to make a play to put the Bengals (1-4, 0-3 ACFC)
away. Buffalo State had taken over on its own six yard line and had moved
to into Salisbury territory. Senior quarterback Mike Mikolaichik (Hilton,
NY/Hilton) had just hit senior Jeff Shostak (E. Smethport, Pa./Smethport
Area) with a 21-yard completion to set up a fourth-and-two situation at
the Sea Gull 40. But senior Andrew Deming (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills)
and senior Nick Good-Malloy (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) stuffed Bob Vesona
(Depew, NY/Depew) for no gain on fourth down, giving the ball back to SU.
Salisbury’s offense then
drove 60 yards in six plays as Satchell scored his third touchdown of the
day. He went off right tackle and scored standing up and Brock Boland’s
(Newfield, NJ/Delsea Regional) point after gave the Gulls a 28-14 halftime
lead that appeared to take the bite out of the Bengals. The Sea Gulls, who
entered the day as the NCAA Division III No.1 rushing team (384.0 ypg) and
the No.5 scoring team (46.2 ppg), ran for 259 yards in the second half to
finish with 448 on the ground. SU scored 38 of its 66 points in the final
30 minutes.
Sea Gull senior
quarterback Travis Peters (LaPlata, Md./McDonough) improved to 6-0 as a
starter, completing 6-of-9 passes for 179 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Senior Joseph Early (New Market, Md./Linganore) hauled in two aerials for
100 yards and a touchdown and Chris Newton (Pasadena, Md./Glen Burnie)
pulled in two for 22 yards. Junior Francis Bryant (Bryans Road,
Md./Lackey) caught a 54-yard touchdown pass as well.
Four other SU players
rushed for more than 40 yards. Newton ran seven times for 63 yards (9.0
avg.), junior Teddy Savage (Owings Mills, Md./Poly) rushed for 53 yards on
five carries (10.6 avg.) and freshman Ronnie Shockley (Berlin, Md./Stephen
Decatur) had a 48-yard scoring run.
Buffalo State had its
share of big offensive plays during the game. Mikolaichik connected on
18-of-34 passes for 242 yards, a pair of touchdowns and one interception.
Greg Meyer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) was his favorite target, pulling in
seven for 135 yards and two scores.
Vesona was the leading
ground gainer for the Bengals – who ran for 237 as a team while finishing
with 498 total yards. Vesona hauled the pigskin 15 times for 156 yards and
a touchdown, averaging 10.4 yards per carry.
Salisbury, which leads
the ACFC in third down conversions allowed, giving up first downs on only
16.4 percent of the opportunities, held the Bengals to 6-of-19 (31.6%),
while the SU offense converted 4-of-9 offensively.
The Sea Gulls took
advantage of a Justin Ritter (Smyrna, De./Smyrna) fumble recovery in the
opening quarter to go up 7-0. SU only had to drive 16 yards for the
touchdown and Satchell slipped three tackles and scored standing up with
6:39 remaining in the period. Boland’s extra point was good and the Gulls
led 7-0.
A short time later,
Peters hit Bryant racing down the middle of the field for a 54-yard
scoring toss with 5:15 left in the opening period. Boland gave SU a 14-0
lead with the PAT.
After stopping the
Bengals again, Satchell completed a five-play, 66-yard drive with a
19-yard scoring run to boost the Salisbury lead to 21-0 with 1:52 left in
the first quarter.
Buffalo State cut the
lead to 21-14 with an 11- and a 44-yard touchdown pass from Mikolaaichik
to Greg Meyer (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). Eric Buchanan (Hamburg,
NY/Frontier) tacked on the point after both times to pull the Bengals to
within 21-14 with 11:18 left in the half.
After scoring a late
touchdown in the second quarter, Satchell took up in the second half where
he left off in the first. After a 38-yard kickoff return by Byron
Westbrook (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) to start the half, Satchell went
off right tackle, broke into the secondary and sprinted into the
endzone to give SU a 35-14 lead.
Bolland extended the
lead to 45-20 with a 39-yard field goal and Satchell answered a touchdown
by the Bengals with a 65-yard scoring run.
Peters and Early teamed
up for an 86-yard scoring pass 55 seconds into the fourth quarter to boost
the SU lead to 52-50, and Bryant had a 17-yard score and Shockley scored
from 48-yards out to close the scoring.
Ritter led the Sea Gull
defensive charge in his first start. The freshman tallied four solo
tackles and led the team with eight total. He also had one tackle behind
the line of scrimmage for a six-yard loss and recovered a fumble. Andrew
Deming (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) secured six tackles, one for a
six-yard loss. He also forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and had a
quarterback sack. Five of Matt Feiser’s (Hagerstown, Md./Smithburg) five
tackles were behind the line of scrimmage for nine yards in losses. James
Jones (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) also tallied five tackles.
Matt Tarasek (Buffalo,
NY/Hutch Tech) led all tacklers with seven unassisted tackles and 10
total. He also recovered a pair of fumbles.
The road ahead for
Salisbury won’t get much easier as the Sea Gulls host Division I-AA St.
Peter’s College next Saturday at 1 p.m.

October 5, 2005
SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury senior kicker Brock Boland
(Newfield, NJ/Delsea Regional) and freshman quarterback Ronnie
Curley (Ellicott City, MD/Howard) received conference recognitions as
ACFC Player of the Week honors were released on Monday.
Boland won Special Teams Player of the
Week for the second consecutive week. He converted 10 out of 10 extra
points to set both a school record and a conference record in Salisbury’s
77-13 victory over Newport News Apprentice.
Boland shared the award with Frostburg
State defensive end Ryan Cutsail. Cutsail returned a block punt 23 yards
for a touchdown and contributed to stop a key drive in the Bobcats’ 27-26
victory over Buffalo State.
Curley won Rookie of the Week honors
after leading the Sea Gulls in rushing on Saturday. He ran for 74 yards
and scored two touchdowns on eight carriers. He was also a perfect three
for three in passing for 22 yards.
Freshman linebacker Justin Ritter

Player of the Week award. Ritter had five tackles, three for a loss.
Junior slot back Francis Bryant

Sea Gulls Rebound in Record Fashion, 77-13
October 1, 2005
SALISBURY-APRENTICE SCHOOL GAME STATS
SALISBURY, Md. - Faced with the possibility
of playing the rest of its season without a potential all-American quarterback
and coming off their first regular season home loss since 2003, the No.20-ranked
Salisbury University football team responded with a school-record 77 points
Saturday afternoon as Travis Peters (LaPlata, Md./McDonough)
led the Sea Gulls to an impressive 77-13 victory over Newport News Apprentice
School at Sea Gull Stadium.
The victory not only puts momentum
back on the side of Salisbury (4-1), but also keeps the Gulls unbeaten in
Atlantic Central Football Conference action (2-0) at the midway point of
the season. Apprentice, which has dropped five straight to Salisbury,
falls to 3-2, 1-2 in ACFC play.
All eyes were on Peters coming into
the game. The senior and close friend of former starting quarterback
Dustin Johnson (Delmar, De./Delmar), who is more than likely lost for
the season with a torn ACL after posting the second-highest Division III
rushing total after four games with 638 yards, came through as he did a
year ago when Johnson was injured. Peters improved his record as a
starting quarterback to 5-0 as he rushed for 57 yards and one touchdown on
five carries, while completing 6-of-10 passes for 131 yards and a pair of
scores.
The SU offense spread around the
wealth as seventeen different players carried the ball for Salisbury. The
Gulls, after falling behind 6-0 early, blew out to a 56-6 lead at
intermission and then shattered the school’s single-game scoring record.
The previous total was 75 points scored against Wesley College on Oct. 15,
1988.
Salisbury, which came into the game
with the No.2-ranked rushing offensive in the country (385.3 ypg),
finished with 393 yards and 7.9-yards per play on the ground. SU tallied
532 total yards, with 153 coming through the air. Freshman quarterback
Ronnie Curley (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) led the balanced ground
attack with 74 yards on eight carries, averaging 9.3 yards per play.
Alfred Little (Salisbury/James M. Bennett) gained 60 yards and scored
a touchdown, Leroy Satchell (Baltimore, Md./Waynesboro) picked up
53 yards and three scores on 11 carries and Antwoine Jackson (Waldorf,
Md./Westlake) finished with 33 yards on six attempts.
In addition to Peters’ totals, Curley
was a perfect 3-for-3 for 22 yards in the second half. Francis Bryant
(Bryans Road, Md./Lackey) was the favorite target of the Sea Gull
quarterbacks, catching four passes for 116 yards.
The Builders were led offensively by
Shonterious Atkins’ 48 yards rushing on 14 attempts, while Bruce Freeman
added 46 more on the ground on 15 carries. Both players scored a rushing
touchdown. Apprentice quarterback Robby Goodman struggled through the air,
completing only 4-of-20 passes for 38 yards and an interception.
Apprentice finished with 105 yards rushing and 168 total yards.
SU handed Apprentice a touchdown early
when Salisbury’s Byron Westbrook (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha)
fumbled a punt return at his own 19-yardline early in the first quarter.
The Builders took advantage of it by pushing the ball into the endzone for
a 6-0 lead at the 11:27 mark. Freeman scored the touchdown, but Hank
Schmidt’s point after attempt was blocked by Salisbury’s Zach Armiger
(Parkton, Md./Hereford).
That was about all that the Sea Gull
defense allowed for the rest of the half, holding Apprentice to minus-four
years at the end of the quarter and 58 yards at intermission. Freshman
linebacker Justin Ritter (Smyrna, De./Smyrna) led the SU defensive
charge with four unassisted and five total tackles. He also had three
tackles behind the line of scrimmage for 12 yards in losses. Freshman
Matt Feiser (Hagerstown, Md./Smithburg) added five tackles and one
behind the line, while freshman Matthew Bookard (Lanham, Md./Eleanor
Roosevelt) and Andrew Deming (Columbia, Md./Oakland, Mills)
both tallied four tackles.
Offensively, the Sea Gulls scored
quickly and often after Apprentice’s first touchdown. SU converted 9-of-14
third-down conversions and scored on 11-of-16 possessions in the game,
including seven straight during one stretch.
SU took the lead for good on a 60-yard
touchdown run on a reverse by Little with 10:35 left in the opening
quarter. Brock Boland (Newfield, NJ/Delsea Regional), who shattered
the school record with 11 extra points in the game, added the PAT.
A bad snap on a punting situation
later in the period allowed Salisbury to drive only eight yards for a
score. Peters hit Chris Newton (Pasadena, Md./Glen Burnie) for the
touchdown with 5:55 left in the opening period and a 14-6 lead.
Satchell created a 21-6 score on the
Gulls’ next drive when he hit paydirt from four yards out, culminating a
six-play, 34-yard drive.
Salisbury added 35 second-quarter
points. Jackson scored on a 17-yard run, completing a 51-yard drive. That
was followed by a three-play 46-yard drive as Satchell scored from eight
yards out. Peters scored the next touchdown himself, this one from
36-yards out, finishing a 49-yard drive. The Sea Gulls took advantage of a
Robbie Goodman fumble to drive the ball 14 yards for the next touchdown.
Satchell did the honors from eight yards out. The final SU touchdown of
the half came from Peters, when he hit Little for the scoring pass from
six yards out.
Leading 56-6 at the half, Curley
scored on a 45-yard run with 5:30 left in the third quarter to increase
the lead to 63-6. Curley scored on a 12-yard run early in the fourth
quarter and Ronnie Shockley (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) scored
from eight yards out to complete the SU scoring with 12:01 remaining.
Atkins scored a 21-yard touchdown for
Apprentice to account for the final points.
Salisbury will now enjoy a bye week
before hosting Buffalo State in an Atlantic Central Football Conference
game on Oct. 15.

Earns Conference Recognition
September 26, 2005
SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury senior kicker Brock Boland (Newfield,

Monday following his flawless performance in Salisbury’s 31-27 loss to
Montclair State.
Boland converted two field
goals of 26 and 27 yards and three extra points despite playing with a
very sore right hip. Apprentice kicker Hank Schmidt earned honorable
mention after converting four extra points in the Builders’s 28-14 win at
Chowan College.
The Sea Gulls will look to
avenge their first loss of the season on Saturday as they face Apprentice
at Sea Gull Stadium in the annual Homecoming Game. Kickoff is set

Montclair State
Knocks off Unbeaten Salisbury, 31-27
September 24, 2005
SALISBURY-MONTCLAIR GAME STATS
SALISBURY, Md. - Special teams mistakes have been costly for the No.10-ranked
Salisbury University Sea Gull football team this season. But those miscues were
magnified Saturday afternoon as the Montclair State University used kickoff
returns of 92 and 84 yards and a bad snap on a Sea Gull punt situation to turn
them into 17 points in a 31-27 upset of No.10-ranked Salisbury in non-conference
action at Sea Gull Stadium.
Salisbury, which lost one of its first nine games of the season for the
first time since the 2001 season, outgained the Red Hawks, 472-301, but
couldn’t put the game a way when the Gulls had opportunities. Salisbury
(3-1) lost despite senior quarterback Dustin Johnson (Delmar,
Md./Delmar) rushing for 178 yards on 14 carries, averaging 12.7-yards
per rush. It was his third-highest rushing total of his carrier, but he
left the game late in the fourth quarter with an ankle sprain. It was only
the second time in his career that he rushed for more than 100 yards and
SU lost. He has crossed the century mark 14 times in his college career,
including every game this season. Johnson has rushed for 638 yards and
averaged 8.5-yards per rush this season.
Senior running back
Leroy Satchell (Balitmore, Md./Waynesboro) also broke the century
mark, running 20 times for 120 yards. He averaged 6.0-yards per rush and
has totaled 497 yards and has averaged 6.2-yards per rush. Teddy Savage
(Owings Mills, Md./Poly) also had an outstanding effort in defeat,
finishing with 96 yards on 12 carries, averaging 7.9-yards per play.
But it was Montclair
State (1-2) that made its stats count. Despite rushing for only 121
yards as a team, senior quarterback Eric Ferriol (Belleville,
NJ/Belleville)
completed 11-of-21 passes for 180 yards and a pair of scores. Fred
Carter (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) hauled in three aerials for 60
yards and a touchdown, while Brian Reitmeyer (West Orange, NJ/West
Orange) caught two for 24 and a score.
Salisbury, which entered
play Saturday ranked No.3 in the nation in rushing (367.0 per game), moved
the ball on the ground throughout the contest, finishing with 440 yards,
but it wasn’t enough as the average field position for SU to begin drives
was its own 29.
The Gulls broke on top
7-0 with 9:51 left in the first half when Savage culminated a seven-play
55-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run. Salisbury obtained
possession on an interception by junior James Jones (Hyattsville,
Md./Northwestern).
After forcing the Red
Hawks to punt, the Gulls put together a 13-play, 71-yard drive that took
6:07 off the first-quarter clock. Brock Boland (Newfield, NJ/Delsea
Regional), who made both field goal attempts on the day, drilled a
26-yarder to give SU a 10-0 lead with 59 seconds remaining in the opening
stanza.
But MSU freshman
Jared Greensberg (Butler, NJ/Butler) (two kickoffs, 176 yards) put the
Red Hawks back in business when he took the ensuing kickoff at his own
one-yard line and didn’t stop until Boland brought him down with a
shoestring tackle at the Salisbury seven. Ferriol scored on the
quarterback sneak from one yard out and junior Vin Doffont (North
Arlington, NJ/St. Mary’s) tackled on the PAT to pull the Hawks within
10-7 with 14:35 left in the half.
The squads traded
possession until Montclair moved 73 yards in 10 plays to take the lead. On
a third-and-10 situation, Ferriol hit Reitmeyer coming across the endzone
for the score. Salisbury junior defensive back Byron Westbrook (Fort
Washington, Md./DeMatha) got a hand on the pass, but Reitmeyer kept
his concentration and hauled it in. Doffont kicked the extra point to give
MSU the lead, 14-10, heading into intermission.
The Sea Gulls, who
elected to defer to the second half after winning the pregame coin flip,
took the third-quarter kickoff and regained the lead. SU’s six-play,
65-yard drive resulted in a 17-yard scoring run by Johnson with 12:53 left
in the period and Boland’s point after gave SU a 17-14 lead.
Salisbury then added
what the Gulls thought was an insurance touchdown on their next possession
when Johnson hit Kevin Tillage (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) for
20-yard scoring play. The four-play, 60-yard drive elapsed just 1:04 of
the quarter, but SU led 24-14.
Greenberg got loose
again on the ensuing kickoff returning it 84 yards to the Salisbury 12.
Four plays later the Sea Gull defense held and Montclair had to settle for
a 27-yard field goal from Doffont with 8:33 remaining in the third to cut
the SU lead to 24-17.
Special teams problems
once again hurt Salisbury on its next possession when the snap to Sea Gull
punter Bryan Prichard (Frederick, Md./Thomas Jefferson) sailed over
his head on fourth down and he was forced out of bounds at the SU 36.
Ferriol hit Carter on a
post pattern behind the Sea Gull secondary five plays later and Doffont
tied the score at 24-24 with 4:19 remaining in the third quarter.
SU was able to regain
the lead, 27-24, at the 11:56 mark of the fourth quarter on a 27-yard pass
field goal by Boland. Johnson keyed the drive with a 56-yard run.
Montclair then took the
lead for good 4:08 later. A nine-play, 88-yard drive ended with Ryan
McCoach (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) (10 carries, 52 yards) hitting
paydirt from 12 yards out with 7:44 remaining.
Salisbury managed one
final drive to capture the victory. Starting at their own 24-yard line,
the Sea Gulls drove 61 yards in 11 plays. Johnson left the contest during
the early segment of the drive, but senior Travis Peters (LaPlata,
Md./McDonough) took up where he left off, picking up 24 yards on a
second-and-11 situation. But the drive fell short when Peters’ pass to
Tillage fell incomplete with SU at the MSU 15-yard line.
Jones led the Salisbury
defense with nine tackles including six unassisted. In addition to his
interception, he had one tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Jacquis
McCray (Silver Spring, Md./Kennedy) added eight tackles and Joe
Galloway (Pasadena, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) finished with six tackles,
including two quarterback sacks.
Derrick Simmons (Red
Bank, NJ/Monmouth) led the Red Hawks with 10 tackles, including eight
unassisted. He also intercepted one pass for 12 yards and broke up two
passes. John Valkos (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven), Troy Bishop
(Hillside, NJ/Hillside) and Morgan Burklow (Pompton, Plains,
NJ/Pequannock) each added eight tackles.
Salisbury will continue
its homestand next Saturday when the Sea Gulls host Newport News
Apprentice School for the SU homecoming game at 1 p.m.

Salisbury’s Johnson Claims ACFC Offensive Honors
September 19, 2005
SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University
senior quarterback Dustin Johnson (Delmar, Md./Delmar) ran for a
career-high 197 yards on 20 carries Saturday afternoon against No.25
Christopher Newport University. As a result, he has been named the
Atlantic Central Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the
second time this season.
Johnson scored a 73-yard touchdown run
for the contests’ first points and finished the game with seven carries
for 10 yards or more in a 44-24 victory as the Sea Gulls improved to 3-0
on the year for the fourth straight season. Salisbury is 12-1 in game
which Johnson has rushed for more than 100 yards, with the only loss
coming to CNU in the playoffs last year. His previous high came last
season when he rushed for 184 yards in a 35-18 win over Wesley last
season.
This is the second time in three weeks
that Johnson has received the ACFC’s offensive honor. He was named the
honor in Week 1 when the Gulls, who jumped from No.13 to No.10 in the
D3football.com poll this week, defeated Methodist College, 48-28. He
rushed for 174 yards on 18 carries and completed 7-of-10 passes for 84
yards against the Monarchs in the opening win.
Johnson currently leads the ACFC in
rushing with 460 yards on 61 carries for an average of 7.5-yards per play.
He is averaging 153.3 yards per contest. He has completed 21-of-34 passes
(61.8%) for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns after three weeks.
Salisbury leads the ACFC in points,
averaging 42.3 points per game. SU is averaging 367 yards per game on the
ground and 467 total yards through four games, both averages lead the
conference. Salisbury also leads the conference in third down conversions,
turning 45 percent of its third downs into first downs (18-of-40).
Other ACFC players honored during week
three include SUNY Brockport’s senior linebacker John Walther being named
the league’s Defensive Player of the Week after posting his third straight
double-digit tackling performance in a 14-7 Golden Eagles’ win over
Apprentice School. Brockport’s Brian Wise was named the Special Teams’
Player of the Week after accounting for 234 all-purpose yards. Frostburg
State punter Tom Vanik averaged 46.4 yards on five punts, including an
ACFC-record 76-yarder and received the Rookie of the Week honor.

No.13 Salisbury Knocks off No.20 Captains, 44-24
September 17, 2005
SALISBURY-CNU GAME STATS
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Salisbury University head football coach Sherman Wood stated
earlier this week that he was looking for his Sea Gulls to put together two
complete halves of “good” football, and to keep from falling behind early. The
seventh-year SU coach got his message across to his 13th-ranked Sea
Gulls Saturday as senior quarterback Dustin Johnson rushed for a career-high 197
yards and SU went on the road to knock off 20th-ranked Christopher
Newport University, 44-24, at Pomoco Stadium.
The victory was big confidence boost to the Sea Gulls, who not only
improved to 3-0 on the season, but finally put a win together without
having to come from behind in 2005. Salisbury, which recorded its 29th
victory in its last 34 games, won again with offense. After scoring 48 and
35 points in its first two games, SU finished the contest with 444 total
yards and 404 yards on the ground. The Gulls came into the contest ranked
fourth nationally in yards gained on the ground, averaging 348.5 yards per
game.
The Sea Gulls also got a bit of revenge on the
Captains (1-2), who came from behind to knock the Sea Gulls out of the
NCAA Division III playoffs a year ago, 35-24, in the opening round. That
fact was very much on the minds of the Gulls coming into Saturday’s game.
"There’s an old saying that you forget the last game
and look ahead," Wood said in the post-game press conference. "But we
looked over game film from last year’s game and we kept circling one area
from that game - seven turnovers. We knew if we minimized the turnovers
we’d be in good shape."
Salisbury controlled the line of scrimmage,
controlled the time of possession (35:27 to 24:18), won the total offense
battle (444-321) and, most importantly, won the turnover battle (4-0).
Johnson who continues to be dangerous when he touches
the football, led all ground-gainers with 197 yards on 20 carries, to give
him 460 yards rushing after three games. His previous high was 183 yards.
It was Johnson’s third consecutive 100-yard rushing performance of the
season and 13th of his career. SU is now 12-1 in games which
Johnson has rushed for at least 100 yards. The only loss was to CNU last
season.
Leroy Satchell added 107 yards on 16 carries, marking
his second straight 100-yard performance of the year, giving him 377 yards
rushing on the year.
If there was an area of weakness in the contest for
Salisbury, it was special teams play. The Sea Gulls allowed a 90-yard
kickoff return and had a punt blocked and returned 32 yards for a
touchdown to allow the Captains to keep the score interesting in the
fourth quarter.
And while the Salisbury offense kept the pressure on
throughout, the Sea Gull defense played with a bend-but-don’t-break
mentality. The SU secondary recorded four interceptions, including a pair
by Terrance Dorsey, while the Captains scored 24 points and 321 total
yards.
After stopping Christopher Newport on the Captains’
first offensive series, Salisbury sprinted out of the blocks, scoring on
its first offensive series. Johnson, who finished the first half with 137
yards on nine carries, scampered in from 73 yards out. Brock Boland tacked
on the extra point and Salisbury led 7-0 with 12:47 remaining in the
opening quarter.
That set the stage for a huge offensive performance
for the Sea Gulls in the first 30 minutes of play as the Gulls rushed for
244 yards, averaging 10.2 yards per rushing play in the first half.
CNU responded to the Gulls’ touchdown by driving 60
yards in eight plays. The drive culminated with a 32-yard field goal by
Jay Graham with 9:10 left in the first quarter, cutting SU’s lead to 7-3.
Two touchdowns in a span of 59 seconds early in the
second quarter enabled Salisbury to widen the scoring gap to 21-3. Jamar
Garner hit paydirt on both drives. He culminated a six-play, 80-yard drive
with a 40-yard touchdown run. He then scored just a short time later from
four yards out to give Salisbury an 18-point lead.
The Captains used trickery to get back into the game
when wide receiver Nathan Davis connected with Curfew Speight from 44-yard
out to cut the SU lead to 21-10 with 10:08 left in the half.
But a late touchdown by Salisbury took the winds out
of the sails of the Captains. Satchell hit paydirt from six yards out,
completing a 10-play, 78-yard drive that consumed 4:40 of the second
quarter. The drive also appeared to drain the CNU defense, which played
more minutes on the field in humid conditions.
Johnson said the Sea Gulls’ offense still isn’t in
top form.
"I think they were slamming pretty hard on Leroy
(Satchell) in the first half," Johnson said. "But in the second half I
think we had them running around a little bit. We did seem to slow down a
little bit in the fourth quarter, so we still haven’t put four full
quarters of good football together. Offensively we don’t feel we’re
anywhere close to where we need to be."
The Sea Gulls came out strong in the second half and
began pulling away. Antwoine Jackson scored an 11-yard run to culminate a
five-play, 68-yard drive to widen the gap to 34-10, and Jacquis McCray
stepped in front of a Hudson Bryant pass and returned it 29-yard for a
score to give SU a 41-10 lead as time ran out in the second half.
Bryant, who completed 22-of-50 passes for 283 yards
and a pair of touchdowns in the playoff win a year ago, fared well again
against the Gulls on Saturday, completing 19-of-33 passes for 159 yards.
But he couldn’t put the ball in the endzone through the air.
Christopher Newport made the score respectable in the
second half with a kickoff return for a touchdown and also blocked a punt
and ran it back for a score, but the game had long-since been decided.
Salisbury will return home next week to take on Montclair State
University, which is coming off a 17-14 setback to Frostburg State
Saturday.

Sea Gull Earns ACFC
Co-Rookie of the Week Honor
September 16, 2005
SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University
freshman defensive end Justin Ritter (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) was named
Atlantic Central Football Conference Co-Rookie of the Week honors for his
week two performance against conference opponent Brockport St., a game
that saw the Sea Gulls come from 16 points down at the half to win 35-30
in Brockport, New York.
Ritter
contributed five tackles and one sack for a loss of 16 yards. The
sack of Brockport quarterback A.J. Covella backed up the Golden Eagles to
3rd down and 26 yards to go. Covella would then misfire a pass
intended for Mike Bond that ended the drive. The Sea Gulls took the
lead following Ritter’s sack on the next drive, which results in a
Dustin Johnson (Delmar, MD/Delmar) strike to Joe Early (New Market,
MD/Linganore) for 20 yards for the score.
Ritter shares the
award with Apprentice’s Irikefe Ojeni, who contributed five tackles to
Apprentice’s first ACFC victory in history, a 21-3 win over Frostburg
State.
The Sea Gulls
football team will travel to Newport News, Virginia to take on Christopher
Newport University on Saturday. Kickoff will be at 1:30 p.m.
The action can be followed live on WICO radio, AM 1320.

Sea Gulls Overcome SUNY Brockport, 35-30
September 10, 2005
SALISBURY-BROCKPORT GAME STATS
BROCKPORT, NY - Like a wild animal backed into the corner, the Salisbury
University football team was put in an adverse position Saturday afternoon at
Special Olympics Stadium. After turning the ball over three times and shanking a
10-yard punt deep in their own territory in the first half, the No.12-ranked Sea
Gulls found themselves trailing SUNY Brockport 23-7 at intermission. But SU
responded with 296 yards of offense while holding the Golden Eagles to just 115
yards in the final 30 minutes and outscored Brockport 28-7 en route to a 35-30
victory.The win propelled the
defending Atlantic Central Football Conference champions to 2-0 on the
year, 1-0 in the ACFC. Brockport dropped its second straightBolt the
season, while falling to 0-1 in league play. Salisbury will now travel to
Christopher Newport University next Saturday to attempt to avenge last
year’s first-round playoff loss. The Golden Eagles will be back in league
play when they visit unbeaten Newport News Apprentice School.
There is no mistake that Salisbury’s
offense is potent this season. After rolling up 522 yards a week ago in a
48-28 win over Methodist, the Sea Gulls finished with 309 yards on the
ground and 126 more through the air for 435 yards against Brockport. The
Golden Eagles held their own offensively, picking up 86 on the ground, but
322 in the air.
Salisbury senior quarterback Dustin
Johnson (Delmar, Md/Delmar) dominated play both on the ground and through
the air. He ran for 126 yards on 22 carries, while scoring a pair of
touchdowns. He also controlled the airways, connecting on 7-of-12 passes
for 126 yards and two more scores. Joseph Early (New Market,
Md./Linganore) (33 yards), Teddy Savage (Owings Mills, Md./Poly) (18
yards) and Leroy Satchell (Baltimore, Md./Waynesboro) each were on the
receiving end of two passes apiece.
Satchell, who gained 1,259 yards a
year ago, had his best game of the young season, crossing 174 stripes on
29 carries, averaging 6.0 yards per carry while scoring a touchdown.
The Eagles were effective with their
passing game. A.J. Covella picked apart the Sea Gull secondary to complete
25-of-37 passes for 322 yards and three scores. Salisbury’s Byron
Westbrook (Fort Washington, Md./DeMatha) and Terrance Dorsey (Upper
Marlboro, Md./Roosevelt) each intercepted a pass in the game.
Last season Salisbury and Brockport
combined for 67 points. This year’s effort was almost as exciting as they
scored 65. But in the early going it was the Golden Eagles who looked like
they were going to have their own way. Before the high-powered Sea Gull
offense touched the ball, Brockport took the opening kickoff and drove 74
yards in nine plays as Covella hit Matt McCormick with a 13-yard scoring
toss. Adam Lanctot’s extra point gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead with 10:05
left in the opening stanza.
After a Salisbury fumble, Brockport
again stuck the ball in the endzone, driving 47 yards in just two plays.
Covella worked his magic, hitting Mike Mahoney for the 15-yard scoring
toss after the two combined for a 42-yard pass and run on the play prior.
The point after failed, leaving the Golden Eagles ahead 13-0 with 7:30
left in the half.
Salisbury retaliated, driving 70 yards
in 11 plays and using 6:16 of the clock. Johnson did the honors, scoring
from five yards out. Brock Boland nailed the extra point with 1:07 left in
the quarter.
The team traded possessions early in
the second quarter until another costly SU mistake resulted in points on
the board for Brockport. Backed up deep in their own territory, the Sea
Gulls lined up to punt from their own 15-yard line. The Bryan Prichard
(Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) punt was shanked and only went 10 yards
and Kevin Beaumont returned it 25 yards for the score, giving the Golden
Eagles a 20-7 lead with 5:46 left in the half.
Johnson turned the ball over on a
fumble when he was tackled for a loss and SUNY Brockport would turn that
into a 22-yard field goal by Lanctot for a 23-7 lead at the half, with 16
of their points coming at the expense of Salisbury mistakes.
Both teams started slow in the second
half, but Salisbury cut the Brockport lead to 23-14 with 10:03 left in the
quarter when Johnson hit Jamar Garner (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) in
stride with a 56-yard scoring strike.
After a Golden Eagle punt, the
business-like Sea Gulls went back to work, methodically driving 71 yards
in nine plays. Satchell crashed in from 12 yards out to cut the lead to
23-21 with 5:10 left in the third.
Salisbury took the lead for good with
13:05 remaining in the contest. A six-play, 47-yard drive ended with
Johnson hitting Early for a 20-yard scoring strike. Boland’s PAT put SU
ahead 28-23.
The next time they touched the ball,
the Sea Gulls once again hit paydirt. Andrew Deming (Columbia, Md./Oakland
Mills) put Salisbury in business when he recovered a Covella fumble at the
Brockport 31. Johnson scored on a 23-yard jaunt four plays later and
Boland’s PAT created a 35-23 lead with 8:52 remaining.
The Golden Eagles made the game
interesting again with 28-yard touchdown pass from Covella to Mike
Calderon with 3:05 remaining to pull the Golden Eagles to within 35-30.
But Dorsey stopped a late charge with an interception at the Salisbury 41.
Thaddeus Hicks (Cape May, NJ/Lackey)
led the Sea Gull defensive charge, recording eight unassisted tackles and
finished with 11 total. James Jones (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) and
Jacquis McCray (Silver Spring, Md./Kennedy) each added seven tackles,
Justin Ritter (Smyrna, De./Smyrna) finished with five tackles and a sack
for 16 yards. Zach Armiger (Parkton, Md./Hereford) also finished with five
tackles, two of them coming behind the line of scrimmage.

Sea Gulls Open with 48-28 Win Over Methodist
September 3, 2005
SALISBURY-METHODIST GAME STATS
Salisbury, Md. - Salisbury head football coach Sherman Wood said his team was
going to be dangerous offensively this season and his No.9-ranked Sea Gulls
proved just that in the opener at Sea Gull Stadium as SU rolled up 522 yards of
total offense in a 48-28 triumph over Methodist College in both squads’ season
openers.
Salisbury quarterback Dustin Johnson rushed for 103 yards at intermission and
finished as the game’s leading ground gainer with 150 yards on 18 carries and a
touchdown. SU running back Leroy Satchell added 96 more on 15 attempts and three
scores and Jamar Garner tallied 80 yards on just two carries, including a
79-yard touchdown. The Gulls finished with 388 yards on the ground and 134
through the air.
Johnson also was on target in
the passing game, completing 7-oof-10 passes for 84 yards. Travis Peters spelled
Johnson for several series’ in the second half and completed 3-of-6 passes for
50 yards, while gaining 17 yards on the ground.
Methodist quarterback Chris
Roncketti only gained 24 yards on the ground, but completed 15-of-31 passes for
222 yards and a pair of touchdown passes. George Sands was on the receiving end
of four aerials for 108 yards, while Mike Hill led the squad with five
receptions for 28 yards. The Monarchs finished with 319 yards of total offense,
with 218 coming through the air.
The Sea Gulls found themselves
in a dogfight early in the first quarter. After Johnson took the opening play of
a drive and scampered 51 yards for a score with 11:12 remaining in the opening
period, the Monarchs took advantage of a bad snap from center on a fourth-down
attempt and stuck the ball in the end zone. Mike Hill finished a 16-yard drive
with a two-yard burst to knot the score at 7-7 with 35 seconds remaining in the
stanza.
Methodist then took its only
lead of the game early in the second quarter after Johnson fumbled and the
Monarchs recovered on the SU 41-yard line. Patrick Doleman caught a 41-yard pass
from Roncketti on the game’s next play and Patrick Larkin’s extra point game MC
a 14-7 lead with 13:52 left in the half.
Salisbury responded quickly SU
junior Byron Westbrook took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 71 yards to the
Methodist eight. Westbrook finished the game with three kickoff returns for 164
yards. Four plays later Brock Boland, who was an all-region player a year ago,
hit a 22-yard field goal to pull the Sea Gulls within 14-10 with 12:10 left in
the period.
On the Gulls’ next drive, the
squad methodically moved 88 yards in 11 plays and used up 5:13 of the period.
Satchell hit paydirt from 29 yards out with 4:44 on the clock and SU took the
lead for good, 17-14.
Satchell culminated the next
drive for SU, finishing off an eight-play, 56-yard drive with 51 seconds left in
the half and the Sea Gulls led 24-14 at intermission.
The first time SU touched the
ball in the second half, the Sea Gulls put the ball in the end zone. Satchell
completed a six-play, 49-yard drive with a one-yard score with 10:42 left in the
period for a 31-14 lead.
Boland then showed no signs of
a sore hip he’s been suffering from during training camp as he stepped on the
field and nailed a 46-yard field goal with 8:48 remaining in the third to boost
the SU lead to 34-14.
Satchell then added a 15-yard
touchdown run and Garner hit paydirt from 79 yards out to account for the
Salisbury scoring in the fourth period. Hill scored a one-yard touchdown run and
Andrew Gurley caught a 16-yard scoring toss from Antonio Bartee for the
Monarch’s two scores in the period.
Jacquis McCray led the
Salisbury defense with seven tackles, two for a total of 15 yards in losses. Joe
Galloway and Zach Armiger each added six tackles apiece and had tackles behind
the line of scrimmage.
Salisbury will now hit the
road for two weeks. The Sea Gulls travel to SUNY Brockport next Saturday and
then trek to Christopher Newport on Sept. 17.

Recognition
August 8, 2005
Salisbury, MD - Preseason attention for defensive back Byron Westbrook (Fort
Washington, MD/DeMatha) and the Salisbury University football squad continues to
grow as the season quickly approaches. After being ranked No.15 in the
D3football.com preseason poll, the Sea Gulls now find themselves ranked No.12 by
Lindy’s 2005 National College Football Magazine and No.14 by Street &
Smith’s 2005 College Football Yearbook in both publications’ preseason

all-American second team, has also been selected to the Street & Smith’s
preseason all-American team. The publication only chose a first team Division
III squad.
The junior defensive back and return

a year ago. He was a first team all-ACFC selection as a cornerback and return
specialist in 2004, while earning second team all-South Region honors by Don
Hansen’s Football Gazette and third team all-American honors by
D3football.com. He finished the 2004 season ranked seventh nationally in
interceptions per game (0.7), picking off eight for 82 yards, including an
80-yard return for a touchdown. He averaged 10.2-yards per return.
He also had 56 tackles last season to raise his two-year SU career total to 87.

30-yard touchdown.

year ago. The Sea Gulls captured their first ACFC championship and earned a spot
in the NCAA Division III playoffs for the fifth time in the school’s history. SU
fell to Christopher Newport in the opening round of the playoffs, 35-24.

Wood Announces 2005 Football Recruiting
Class
July 2, 2005
Salisbury, MD - Salisbury University head football coach Sherman Wood announced
his 2005
recruiting
class this past week and said he feels it ranks up there with the best of the
seven classes since he’s been head coach of the Sea Gull gridiron program. SU is
coming off the 10-1 season a year ago. It was a season in which the Sea Gulls
captured the Atlantic Central Football Conference championship and a berth in
the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Wood said the Sea Gull staff will welcome 59 new recruits to fall training camp,
which begins on August 14. Fifty-one of those players will be true freshmen,
while eight will begin camp as transfers. Of the newcomers to the program this
fall, 33 will start out on offensive, with three quarterbacks, four running
backs, 10 receivers and 16 linemen taking the field. There will be 26 new faces
on defense, with 11 starting out on the line, eight linebackers and seven
defensive backs.
"I would probably say that this class is
the second best since I’ve been here," Wood admitted. "I think the best class
was probably four years ago with Brad DeHaven, Mike Myrtle and Dustin Johnson,
among others; they really turned this program around. We challenged this class
to do the same thing as those guys leave. This year’s class is probably as good
as they are because of the offensive line."
Several transfers have caught Wood’s eye
as well. Running back David Leonard (5-11, 225) is a sophomore transfer from
Methodist College. The product from Upper Marlboro, MD led all running backs at
Methodist a year ago, rushing for 465 yards on 119 attempts in 10 games. He
averaged 3.9-yards per carry, scoring three touchdowns and averaging 46.5 yards
per game. He also caught five passes for 36 yards and a touchdown. Leonard
rushed for 69 yards on 14 carries (4.9-yard average) against Salisbury last
season.
"We recruited David very hard out of
Riverdale Baptist High School," Wood stated. "He has very, very good feet,
quality shoulders and he’s a legitimate first teamer. We feel he’s going to come
in and contribute right away. And for somebody to come out in his first year at
the college level and be a college’s top running back is very good. He just felt
like he wanted to be closer to home."
Austen Merrills (5-10, 190), a sophomore
transfer from West Virginia Wesleyan, will also be donning the maroon and gold
this fall. The product of Columbia, MD is the brother of University of Maryland
senior running back Mario Merrills, who will be competing for a starting spot
this fall.
"I know Austen’s dad real well - he
coaches at Wild Lake High School," according to Wood. "I saw Austen in Maryland
football camps and other camps that I worked. He’s a solid runner. I think he
would definitely help in our rotation, but he would have to come into camp in
shape. He’s a great kid from a great family background so he has a pretty good
bloodline."
Wood said transfers are the key to any
college program.
"We feed off transfers," he said. "There
is no way we’d be where we are if it wasn’t for transfers. Our motto as far as
recruiting is we treat everybody professionally. We want to make sure,
regardless of what decision they make, that they have a quality visit at
Salisbury. And the last thing we mention to them is if things don’t work out -
and even if they do - for them to give us a call. That’s something we do to plan
for the future."
As for the true freshmen, Wood mentioned
DeMatha High School products David Preston (6-1, 290) and Robert Crisalli (6-4,
260) as two excellent prospects.
"DeMartha High School is WCAC champions
and they are known nationally for having a quality program," Wood said. "David
is a solid kid. Iona (College) was after him real hard. But he and Robert both
decided on us over Iona. They were part of a real quality line. And if you have
a kid that starts for that program, then they’re pretty good. I think those two
are just a couple that are going to be key players coming in."
John Hickcox (6-3, 275), an offensive
lineman from Southern High School in North Beach, MD was one of the top two
linemen in the recruiting class for SU in film evaluation, Wood said. He said
Hickcox is expected to come in and compete for a starting position.
Other notable incoming freshmen are
cornerback Chris Sumo (5-10, 170) of Overlea High School in Rosedale, Md.,
defensive tackle Artie Willette (6-2, 275) of Hereford High School and Monkton,
Md. and slot Soloman Hedd-Williams (5-6, 145) of Herndon High School in Herndon,
Va.
"One of our goals this year was to get
some quality kids in the secondary," the coach said. "One of those kids was
Chris Sumo. I think Chris is a kid that can come in and compete right away.
"The defensive line is an area were we
have a lot of seniors. Artie Willette is a big kid and he is the size of your
typical college defensive tackle. So I see him coming in with the possibility of
playing right away."
