signs free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins
ASHBURN, Va. -
Former Salisbury University football defensive back Byron Westbrook
signed a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, May 15.
Westbrook joins seven other players out of 75 who attended the Redskin's rookie
camp on May 4-6 by signing a contract with the burgundy and gold.
Westbrook
is the career leader in interceptions at Salisbury with 18 and was a 2006
American Football Coaches Association All-American. In addition, the Ft.
Washington, Md. native was a three-time All-Atlantic Central Football Conference
first-team selection at defensive back and was a two-time first-team selection
on special teams. Westbrook was also a two-time D3Football.com All-American
(2004, '06).
Byron is
the younger brother of Philadelphia Eagle All-Pro running back Brian Westbrook.
Both Byron and Brian attended DeMatha High School. Brian attended Villanova
University and completed his fifth NFL season with the Eagles in 2006.
The
Redskins are the second NFL franchise to take a chance on a former Sea Gull as
the New Orleans Saints signed former tight-end Kyle Acker to a free-agent
contract in 2004.
Westbrook
finished the ’06 campaign with 33 tackles and a team-high five interceptions.
