Westbrook
lands place on Washington Redskins' practice squad
LANDOVER, Md. -
Former Salisbury University All-American defensive back Byron Westbrook
was cut last Saturday by the Washington Redskins after going through preseason
camp with the NFL team. On Sunday, Westbrook was given another chance as he was
one of the eight players signed to the Redskins' practice squad for the 2007
season.
Westbrook was one of
three rookies to be named to the practice squad and the only player from the
state of Maryland to be added to the practice squad. The Ft. Washington, Md.,
native attended DeMatha High School in Prince Georges County. Westbrook's older
brother Brian is an All-Pro running back for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Byron is SU's all-time leader in interceptions with 18. He made a statement in
the first preseason game for the Redskins when he recovered a fumble for a
touchdown against the Tennessee Titans to help Washington win 14-6. He finished
the Washington Redskins' preseason with four tackles and one forced fumble. It
has been noted several times in news reports that the Washington coaching staff
likes Westbrook’s potential.
